The chair of the Pacific Islands Forum and Prime Minister of Tonga, Hon Dr Feleti Sevele, has announced the intention of the Forum Secretariat's secretary- general, Greg Urwin, to resign from the position on medical grounds.

The secretary-general of the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat, [Australian] Greg Urwin has resigned for health reasons. Mr Urwin tendered his resignation to the current chairman of the Forum, the prime minister of Tonga, Dr Fred Sevele.

Speaking on the secretariat's monthly radio programme, Mr [Greg Urwin] said: \"The Forum agenda is building up all the time partly, I think, because our members are looking to the Forum for more support and because the Forum partners are investing more time and effort in the organization as well. 'So all of that is contributing to a broadening agenda,\" Mr Urwin said. \"But in terms of specific issues that might come up at this Forum, clearly there's a good deal of interest in what's happening in Fiji in the light of Fiji's position as the headquarter for a lot of regional organizations,\" Mr Urwin said.

The Pacific Island Forum has protested the passage of a ship carrying nuclear waste through the region this month - a journey which forum member Australia doesn't oppose.

Mr Urwin said Forum members had expressed their collective commitment to upholding democratic processes and institutions in Forum member countries as enshrined in the Biketawa Declaration.

\"As the actions of the Republic of Fiji military forces now prevent Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase from exercising his leadership of the Fiji government, and have also made it impossible as a matter of practicality for him to fulfil his duties as forum chair at the present time, forum leaders are considering an alternative chairing arrangement,\" he said in a statement on the forum website.

\"As the actions of the Republic of Fiji military forces now prevent Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase from exercising his leadership of the Fiji government, and have also made it impossible as a matter of practicality for him to fulfil his duties as forum chair at the present time, forum leaders are considering an alternative chairing arrangement,\" he said in a statement on the forum website. \"Forum members wish to assist Fiji move swiftly and peacefully toward the restoration of democratic government, within the boundaries of Fiji's constitution and the rule of law,\" he said.
