Historical Interpretations of the \Fifth Empire\
by
Valdez, M. A. T
in
Bible -- Prophecies

,
History -- Religious aspects -- Christianity
2011,2010
How may a 17th century theory about the Fifth Empire and the succession of empires be so similar to the 2nd century BCE theory introduced by the Book of Daniel? How was this possible in the works of António Vieira, S.J., (1608-1697), and particularly in his famous manuscript, the Clavis Prophetarum - De Regno Christi In Terris Consummato? This book analyzes the history of the interpretation of concepts such as Fifth Empire and succession of ages from as early as the 2nd century B.C. until the 17th century. Influenced by the main intellectual and religious tendencies of the 17th century, Vieira's interpretation has revealed itself to be original in the way that it introduces a new reading/interpretation of the succession of historical periods. The Jesuit also identifies the antichrist and the Last Emperor with historical characters of his time.
Portuguese artists in London : shaping identities in post-war Europe
\"This book centres on four Portuguese artists' journeys between Portugal and Britain and aims at rethinking the cultural and artistic interactions in the post-war Europe, the shaping of new identities within a context of creative experimentalism and transnational dynamics and the artistic responses to political troubles. Leonor de Oliveira examines the contributions of the work of Paula Rego, Barto dos Santos, Joنao Cutileiro and Jorge Vieira, among other artists, to shape referential images of Portuguese identity that not only responded to the purpose of breaking with dominant iconographic and aesthetic representations but also incorporated a critical perspective on contemporaneity. This title will appeal to scholars interested in art history, Portuguese and European art, and the mid-20th century art scene\"-- Provided by publisher.
Rereading Heidegger with Ser and Estar

Despite the impressive influence that Martin Heidegger has over 20th-century thought, there has been little scholarship on how Sein und Zeit has influenced Latin American philosophy. I correct for this critical oversight by investigating how Rodolfo Kusch, Álvaro Vieira Pinto, and Paulo Freire, respectively, use the words ser and estar to critique and creatively reappropriate Heidegger's Sein lexicon in Sein und Zeit .

The Journey of Ideas to Brazil and the Regionalism of Torto Arado
2026
This paper aims to analyze Torto Arado (2019) by Itamar Vieira Júnior, given the role that the journey of ideas plays in 19th century Brazilian regionalism and its recovery in the 21st century. In the 19th century, European intellectuals such as Bouterwek, Sismondi, and Ferdinand Denis played a vital role in developing nationalism in Brazilian literature. Regionalism, as an aesthetic guided by the description of spaces and characters away from urban centers, was influenced by nationalist ideas coming from Europe, especially from France. In the 21st century, regionalism is retaken by Itamar Vieira Júnior, but based on the journey of new concepts developed by gender and race studies in the North American context. In this regard, this paper presents this hypothesis: the journey of literary theory, especially of studies produced in American universities (cultural studies, queer studies, post-colonial studies, subaltern studies, disability studies, afro-American studies, Latino studies) impact on Brazilian regionalism. If in the 19th century, space was a determining element of the psychology of the characters, in the 21st century, other issues are brought to the debate: the condition of a woman, black, in a country that still suffers from its patriarchal and slave-owning past. Therefore, this paper will analyze Torto Arado’s regionalism given three aspects: the journey of ideas, the discrepancies with 19th century regionalism, and the reconfiguration of the genre in the 21st century based on issues raised by literary theory. Could Early Modern Messianic Movements Cross Religious Boundaries?
2018
Could early modern messianic movements cross religious boundaries? Drawing on several examples of Jewish messianic movements from the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries, this paper argues that in certain very specific circumstances they could. The circumstances of such crossover tended to be particular to the early modern period, such as the Converso condition, the participation of Christian Hebraists, and shared messianic expectations among Jews, Christians and Muslims.

Quem semeia a palavra?

Tracking António Vieira's \Clavis Prophetarum\: The St. Bonaventure, Franciscan Institute, Manuscript 28
2017
The Clavis Prophetarum or De Regno Christi in Terris Consummate written by António Vieira, S.J. (1608-97) should be considered by scholars as one of the most important works of the seventeenth century. In it, Vieira introduces the reader to his interpretation of the theological concept of \"Fifth Empire,\" one that illustrates his imperial ideology, and consequently, a vision that might have influenced Portuguese imperial ideology during the reign of John IV of Portugal (r. 1640–56). This article introduces the recently discovered partial manuscript of the Clavis Prophetarum found at St. Bonaventure University in the \"Franciscan\" Collection, ms. 28 and compares it with the two main existing manuscripts: Biblioteca Casanatense ms. 706 and Arquivo Nacional da Torre do Tombo (ANTT), Conselho Geral do Santo Ofício, ms. 122. This study will analyze more deeply how Vieira understood the concept of \"invincible ignorance of God,\" taking into consideration the differences in content in the St. Bonaventure, Franciscan Institute, ms. 28 compared to the other two manuscripts.

Autonomy in limitation: multilateral institutions and promoting peace in the path of Sergio Vieira de Mello/Autonomia na limitacao: instituicoes multilaterais e promocao da paz na trajetoria de Sergio Vieira de Mello
From the reflection on the interaction of the professional career of Sergio Vieira de Mello with the dynamic performance of the institutions of the United Nations system, the central argument of this paper is that the major flaws in the promotion of peace and security by multilateral institutions like the UN come from division and dispersion of the stronger members, that use instrumentally institutions to maintain and expand their power and create gaps in performance easily exploited by combatants in political and humanitarian crisis situations around the world. Given this circumstance, the emergence of new threats in the international system can lead to localized and confined changes by attracting the attention of states to the role of international organizations in the promotion of legitimacy, the development of dialogue with the parties involved in disputes, security building and the destabilization of the hierarchies in the relationship with the difference.
