In Gentleness, Strength
I belong to a group called the World Presidents' Organization. We had a meeting in Monterey, Calif., on Oct. 13, and there was a team-building exercise. You could shoot the arcade shooting machine for 15 points, drive this racing car for 25 points or ride a mechanical bull for 100 points. Without hesitation, I said I could ride the mechanical bull because I rode bucking horses on the farm. You had to stay on for 10 seconds. At eight seconds I was still doing great. But then it got faster. That's when I heard and felt what I thought was my groin muscles being torn apart. I fractured my pelvis. Now it's held together by a steel plate and four screws. During my bachelor days I had a motorcycle and a ski boat. But when I married Marie in 1973 I sold them. So for my 46th birthday she bought me this big Harley-Davidson Softail Classic motorcycle. There's something about riding a motorcycle that is like being a kid driving the tractor on the farm. When you're cutting alfalfa, there's not much to do and your mind wanders. There's a peacefulness to it. But I think I might sell it. The risk-reward ratio is out of balance at this stage in my life.

Roger Valine, president and CEO of Vision Services Plan (VSP) and who has a degree in sociology, has always been fascinated by the many different personalities he was exposed to ever since he was a child. It is Valine's ability to apply his sociology training to business that has made him the successful leader of the technologically advanced carrier.
