How Much Government is Too Much Government?: Power and Resistance in V for Vendetta
Comic books and graphic novels have a long tradition of upholding anarchism as one recurring element in narration. One such example is Alan Moore’s work “V for Vendetta,” a classic both in the history of graphic novels and the evolution of the genre. This article argues how anarcho-communism is manifested as a way of resistance in this rather bleaker work, which depicts a future England with Orwellian characteristics that have become a fascist police state. The work brings out Moore’s personal politics and, most notably, his perspective on anarchism. In contrast to how popular culture portrays it and dictionaries define it, anarchism as an ideology is a way out from many recurrent political quandaries. This article attempts to examine these factors by investigating the life and predicament of the titular character and therefore provides an in-depth comprehension of the state-subject relation portrayed in the novel. It also tries to confirm that there is an inseparable relation between power and violence.
