Association of child maltreatment subtypes and long-term physical health in a German representative sample
Background: Child maltreatment is a major public problem, associated with enormous consequences on the individual and socioeconomic level. Studies show a clear impact of child maltreatment on long-term physical health. However, there is a lack of analyses comprising a wide variety of subtypes of maltreatment and addressing cumulative effects of different maltreatment subtypes experienced during childhood on physical health. Objective: The objective of this analysis was to assess the association of different subtypes and the intensity of child maltreatment with long-term physical health outcomes. Methods: In a cross-sectional observational approach, a representative sample of the German population (N=2510) was assessed regarding socioeconomic information, their current health status, and their experiences of child maltreatment using the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ). Chi2-Tests were performed to compare differences of physical health conditions in adulthood in association with child maltreatment and binary regression analyses to assess the relationship of physical health and number of different subtypes of maltreatment experienced during childhood. Results: Odds increased significantly for obesity (1.8), diabetes (1.26), cancer (1.28), hypertension (1.16), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (1.51), history of myocardial infarction (1.29) and stroke (1.31) with increasing number of experienced subtypes of child maltreatment. Growing intensity of each subtype of maltreatment was associated with higher rates of all assessed physical health conditions, which could point towards a dose-dependency of the relationship between maltreatment and long-term physical health. Conclusions: Child maltreatment is associated with increased odds for the leading morbidity and mortality causes in Germany. Interventions encompassing secondary and primary preventive strategies are critical to target this major public health problem and its devastating consequences. (ZPID).
The mediating role of parents and school in peer aggression problems
Starting from the ecological framework, the present study aimed to examine the mediating effects of parental supervision and school climate on the relationship between exosystem variables (time spent with media and perceived neighbourhood dangerousness) and peer aggression problems (peer aggression and victimisation). The participants were 880 primary school students. The data were analysed with multiple regression. The results show that both mediators (parental supervision and school climate) have statistically significant partial mediating effects on peer aggression and victimisation. If students experienced more parental supervision, there was a decrease in the relationship between a) time spent with media and peer aggression, and b) perceived neighbourhood dangerousness and peer aggression and victimisation. Identical findings were obtained for positive school climate. Thus, positive school climate and parental supervision served as protective factors against the negative influence of dangerous neighbourhoods and excessive use of media on peer aggression problems. Predictors of bullying and victimisation in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder
The objective of this paper is to determine whether age, gender, Individualised Education Programme, the experience of victimisation by peers, and the experience of bullying others are predictors of bullying and victimisation in children with ADHD. The sample consisted of children aged from 7 to 15 with ADHD diagnosis (N=72). Gender is a significant predictor of physical bullying, whereas the predictors of verbal bullying are gender, being enrolled in an Individualised Education Programme (IEP), verbal victimisation and the feeling of security. The males with ADHD without any school accommodations (IEP) and who are exposed to verbal victimisation are also more often verbally aggressive towards their peers. Children with ADHD who are verbally aggressive and feel secure in the school setting are more exposed to verbal victimisation. (DIPF/Orig.).
Adolescent boys, embodied heteromasculinities and sexual violence
In this paper the author summarizes several life history case studies of adolescent boys who were identified at school as \"wimps\" and who eventually engaged in various forms of sexual violence. Such boys rarely are - if at all - discussed in the childhood, education and feminist literatures on sexual violence. The life stories reveal the interrelationship among in school bullying, reflexivity, embodied structured action, and the social construction of heteromasculinities in the commission of sexual violence by subordinated boys. The author concludes by considering the implications the research has to the evolving discourses on social scientific conceptualizations of reflexive embodiment and heteromasculinities. (DIPF/Orig.).
Names will never hurt me?
In this article, [the authors] examine the impact of racialized name-calling on a group of twenty-six \"visible minority\" youth from New Brunswick, Canada. Through one-on-one interviews and focus groups, the authors compare views held by visible minority students and their parents to the views of White authority figures regarding the significance of racism and racialized name-calling at school. While White authority figures often view name- calling - even that of a racialized nature - as common adolescent behavior, the visible minority participants equate such name-calling with a serious form of harassment and violence. The authors contend that much of the disparity in these views is the result of White authority figures' perception of racialized name-calling as isolated incidents rather than part of a continual pattern of harassment encountered by visible minority students. As a result of this disparity, the authors identify three responses to racism that the youth participants typically enact: splintered universe, spiraling resistance, and disengagement. These responses are often destructive to visible minority students and negatively affect their school experiences. The authors recommend increased attention by school authorities to the everyday racist assaults that visible minority students have to endure. (DIPF/Orig.).
Schlüsselwörter: Beleidigungskultur, Männerfußball, Trash Talk, Ritualisierung, Fankultur / Between provocation, mockery and belittlement: The culture of insult in German men’s soccer. Abstract: Insults in soccer have long been more than just themost spectacular cases that make headlines in the media. They are part of everyday life – they happen every day and are a normalized practice that goes far beyond individual incidents. Between ritual, demonstration of power and group cohesion, they fulfil different functions on the pitch, in the dressing room or in the stands: from provocation to humor to strengthening team spirit. Based on ethnographic field research in the Rhine-Main area, this article shows how deeply insults are embedded in the everyday life of German men’s soccer. It sheds light on how language challenges or stabilizes hierarchies, marks affiliation and shapes identifications. This makes it clear that the “culture of insults” in soccer is not merely a marginal phenomenon – it opens a window into the social dynamics of power, masculinity and community. Keywords: Culture of insult, men’s soccer, trash talk, ritualization, fan culture
