HAVEN'T WE BEEN HERE BEFORE?
2011
Upon entering the gallery, I first encountered [McFadden]'s project and my attention went directly towards Ashley Neese's endearing video work, In My Room (2006). Here the artist Hpsynchs her heart out, posturing with het chin up, to her reflection in the mirror, belting out the irritating pop song \"Since You've Been Gone\" by Kelly Ciarkson. This was overlaid with a monologue of the artist working through her break-up with \"Nick\" and trying to naively talk herself into believing that things will work out and that everything is going to be \"okay.\" With the chorus of Clarkson's angry ballad imprinted firmly on repeat in my head, the wistful nostalgia of youth is echoed in the bookended video work Screaming Girls (2005) by Jo-Anne Balcean. This work is comprised of edited-together, sloweddown sequences of black and white footage, circa 1950s, of young women reacting to, what I assume are, the live performances of rock 'n' roll musicians, from the same era. Although the video is silent, the suggested ear-piercing, ecstatic shrieks of these young women overcome with rapture thanlefully replaces Ciarkson in my internal audio track. Drawn from a time when cultural traditions were beginning to loosen, these young ladies exhibit behaviour that is not very lady-like. Overcome with emotion, shrieking, crying, spastically waving their hands and hair, in complete and utter jubilation, the religious fervour of hero worship and the release of repressed sexual energy defines this highly evocative and hypnotic work. Turning around, I am absorbed by Jim Verburg's motion sequence composed of two years of still photographs. Many images are of banal family gatherings and getaways to the cottage, interspersed with some particularly intimate sexual moments, overlaid with a stacCato-like clicking and a soñ-spoken monologue. \"I can't share anything real and you can't talk about anything real\" and \"I am everything you fear about yourself\" are two powerful confessions in the voiceover, which are not uncommon sentiments within the dynamics of any relationship. For a Relationship (2007) is thus a haunting and eloquent document of the artist's own attempt to come to terms with his relationship with a closeted family member. Due to its rawness, this work transcends the specific to become a critique of the difficulty of communicating very personal feelings and the consequential failed relationships because of this common human flaw.

THE DOMESTIC QUEENS PROJECT (DOMESTIC QUEENS: JIM VERBURG, JASON HENDRICKSON, ZACHARI LOGAN, RYAN CONRAD, LIAM MICHAUD, AND REB RICHARD E. BUMP, AND 27 × DOUG: LARRY GLAWSON)
2011
Tying these distinct enactments of living together is the spectre of Evergon's relationship with [Roberto]. Roberto's presence looms large: through [LARRY GLAWSON] and Doug, along with the younger generation of artists included here, a portrait of Evergon and Roberto also emerges. We begin to see that even though relationships are all very different, they are also very much the same: in 1991, Felix Gonzalez-Torres produced Untitled, a photograph of an unmade bed, taken after the death of his lover, Ross Laycock. The image was installed on 24 billboards throughout New York City, and was generally understood to symbolize the loss of lovers, family and friends to aids. However, in reflecting on his work's intended authence, Gonzalez-Torres stated, \"When people ask me, 'Who is your public?' I say honestly, without skipping a beat, 'Ross.' The public was Ross. The rest of the people just come to the work.\"7 Coming to the work and to the threshold of the various oikos encountered in The Domestic Queens Project, we need bear in mind that it is a privilege to even be invited in. Another forefather to the queer siblings that gather in the gallery's vitrine is photographer Larry Glawson, whose 27 x Doug (1979-ongoing) occupies the interior gallery. Curator J.J. Kegan McFadden concentrates on the love relationship played out over time, here captured in nearly 30 images of Glawson's partner, Doug Melnyk, photographed by Glawson over as many years. Although Glawson is rarely seen in the photographs, [Mark Clintberg] reminds us that, \"he is anything but absent\" because \"we always see Larry's view of Doug, and therefore their position - physical, emotional, and psychic - relative to one another.\"6 Standing in the position of Glawson, I try to make contact with Doug. But he is looking elsewhere, just past me; I know this because we have never met and that is not the look you give a stranger.

Audits curdling dairies: New housing inspections leave some farmers 'livid'
2007
[Jake Verburg] operates Verburg and Son dairy west of Modesto, with 320 acres and 800 cows. He and about 300 other dairy farmers in Stanislaus County got a letter late last week from the county Department of Environmental Resources, informing them that they might qualify as dairy labor camps. Milk is the No. 1 farm product in Stanislaus County and the San Joaquin Valley. Dairies generated $546.8 million in Stanislaus County in 2005, and an estimated $4.5 billion in gross income for the San Joaquin Valley.
