Leveling Up Video Game Industry Leaders Through Applied OD Principles

Video games are not confined to child's play. The act of making, selling, and consuming video games has become a global economic and cultural juggernaut during the last three decades. Nearly 80% of the total online population engages with video games in some fonn (Jakoub & Meehan, 2023). In the last two years alone, video games have topped tire United States domestic box office, served as a focal point for Amazon's highest-recommended fiction novel of tire year, inspired a hit Apple subscription TV series, and became an interactive concert platfonn for some of the world's most famous music artists. The number of US-based employees working in the video game industry has more than doubled since 2010, reaching nearly 270,000 (Statista/Statista Consumer Market Insights, 2023). These developers and publishers are driving billions in consumer spending and revenue. However, the industry has struggled to keep pace with its own rapid growth, leading to issues around workplace conditions, harassing behavior, a lack of employee diversity, and more. The principles and practices within Organization Development can serve as a crucial lens for video games industry leaders to confront and address many of tirese challenges thoughtfully. This article examines tire myriad ways in which video game leaders can better approach production, procedural, and interpersonal issues with a different perspective. It also provides insight into how game leaders can more fluidly navigate ever-present change stemming from a multi-generational workforce that often lacks formal leadership training-compounded by today's digital-first workplace environment.
