This study reports the conodont succession across the Visean-Serpukhovian (V/S) boundary interval at the Naqing section, South China. Continuous centimetre-scale sampling of the relatively deep-water section in recent years has provided new data for a more detailed biostratigraphy of conodonts across the Visean-Serpukhovian boundary. Three conodont zones were described in ascending order: the Gnathodus bilineatus, Lochriea nodosa and Lochriea ziegleri zones. The first appearance datum (FAD) of L. ziegleri has been moved down to 60.1 m above the base of the Naqing section. The correlation of the conodont succession across the Visean-Serpukhovian boundary in the Naqing section with other sections in Eurasia is discussed.

Foraminiferal Biostratigraphy of the Visean–Serpukhovian (Mississippian) Boundary Interval At Slope and Platform Sections In Southern Guizhou (South China)

The Visean–Serpukhovian boundary is not yet defined by a Global Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) but it is recognizable operationally by the appearance of the conodont Lochriea ziegleri in the L. nodosa–L. ziegleri chronocline. Foraminiferal successions across this boundary in the type area of the Serpukhovian Stage (Moscow Basin, Russia), elsewhere in Russia and in the central United States suggest that the appearances of Asteroarchaediscus postrugosus, Janischewskina delicata, Eolasiodiscus donbassicus, and specimens controversially referred to “Millerella tortula” are reliable, auxiliary indices to the base of the Serpukhovian. In southern Guizhou Province, China, Visean–Serpukhovian rock sequences from slope and platform settings have yielded rich associations of conodonts and foraminifers, respectively. The Nashui section is a leading candidate for the Serpukhovian GSSP because its slope deposits contain an uninterrupted record of conodont occurrences including the L. nodosa–L. ziegleri transition. Foraminifers recovered from the Nashui section are comparatively rare and include none of the basal Serpukhovian indices. In contrast, the nearby Yashui section represents a platform interior setting in which foraminifers flourished and conodonts were nearly absent. The base of the Serpukhovian at Yashui is marked approximately by the appearance of “tortula-like” specimens. Although it is not possible to correlate biostratigraphically between the Nashui and Yashui sections, the occurrence of “tortula-like” specimens at the Yashui section allows correlation with the mid-Venevian Substage of the Moscow Basin at a level coinciding with the appearance of L. ziegleri. Together, the slope and platform sections comprise an informative biostratigraphic reference area for micropaleontologic characterization of the Visean–Serpukhovian boundary in southern Guizhou.

The upper Visean Magdalen Islands basalts of eastern Quebec, Canada; a complex assemblage of contrasting mafic rock types erupted in peak stages of transtensional basin development above a mantle plume

A thick succession of mafic upper Asbian volcanic rocks is exposed as cap rocks in the Magdalen Islands of eastern Quebec. This succession records peak stages of a Late Devonian to Early Carboniferous magmatic system that regionally developed from transtensional tectonics above a mantle plume. In the upper part of the succession, tholeiitic basalts with enriched mid-oceanic ridge basalt (E-MORB) affinities are tightly interbedded with highly alkaline basalts with ocean island affinities, whereas the lower part is composed of moderately alkaline basalts and pyroclastic deposits that are interpreted as the products of mixing between these two compositionally distinct melts. Based on trace-element contents and geological constraints, the tholeiitic basalts were produced by decompressional melting in depleted uppermost asthenospheric mantle material enriched over the average (E-MORB-type source) at the top of the plume, whereas the highly alkaline basalts were produced subsequently when decompressional melting reached down into the enriched mantle (ocean island basalt–type source). These two primary melts may have been thermally stratified below the lithosphere before being tapped by transtensional structures to feed a thick magmatic underplating that regionally developed at the base of the crust, where magma mixing may have occurred. Interbedding of the two contrasting melts in the upper part of the succession implies that, although the two primary mantle sources were still being tapped into, magma mixing was by then no longer occurring. Above a small gap, the uppermost flow is a fluorine-rich tholeiitic basalt with arc affinities that suggest partial melting of the regional subcontinental lithospheric mantle source, which was previously enriched by nearly continuous subduction below eastern Canada in early to middle Paleozoic times. The latter setting seemingly corresponds to the local waning of the magmatic system in uppermost Asbian times, possibly because of the westward migration of the overridden plume toward New Brunswick, where alkaline volcanism from a sublithospheric source resumed in Brigantian times.

A new foraminiferal subzone (Cf5α or MFZ12α) in between the classical foraminiferal zonal biozones is characterized by the first occurrence of Archaediscus at concavus stage, primitive species of Pojarkovella, as well as the first Endothyranopsis s.s. This interval is represented in England, France and Morocco (in the western Palaeotethys) and in South China, and more widely in Iran (in the eastern Palaeotethys), where it is partly similar to the MFZ11B subzone defined by previous authors. The position of this new biozone within the Livian or Holkerian substages suggests that it has to be considered as part of the middle Viséan substage. We therefore propose the abandonment of the notation MFZ11B, which includes lower Viséan rocks, and the subdivision of the middle Viséan zones MFZ12 and Cf5 into two subzones MFZ12α or Cf5α, and MFZ12β or Cf5β, with the latter subzone containing the classical Livian-Holkerian foraminiferal guides Pojarkovella nibelis and Koskinotextularia. Furthermore, the lower Viséan MFZ11 zone can be subdivided in most Palaeotethyan basins into three subzones: a lower MFZ11α subzone (characterized by the first occurrence of Uralodiscus rotundus, as well as most species of Glomodiscus); a middle MFZ11β subzone (characterized by the first occurrence of Archaediscus at involutus stage and Conilidiscus); and an upper MFZ11γ subzone (characterized by the first occurrence of Nodosarchaediscus, Consobrinellopsis and Lituotubella).

Early Visean bryozoans from the Shishtu II Member, Shishtu Formation, central Iran

Four bryozoan species are described from the upper member (Shishtu II) (Visean, Early Carboniferous=Mississippian) of the Shishtu Formation of central Iran: Nikiforovella ulbensis Nekhoroshev, 1956, Nicklesopora elegantulaformis (Nekhoroshev, 1956), Primorella cf. iranica Gorjunova, 2006, and Nikiforopora intermedia (Nikiforova, 1950). This Visean assemblage shows close palaeogeographical affinities of Iran with Kazakhstan and Russia (eastern Transbaikalia, Kurgan region).

Mechanisms controlling the localisation of fault‐controlled hydrothermal dolomitisation, Derbyshire Platform, UK

The Derbyshire Platform is a Mississippian aged flat‐topped, steep sided platform that forms the westernmost expression of the Derbyshire‐East Midlands Platform. On the south‐east platform margin, 60 km2 of Visean limestone has been dolomitised, forming two distinct bodies. One of these bodies forms along a major NW–SE trending basement fault and smaller, associated, N–S trending faults and fractures. This study uses outcrop, petrographic and geochemical analysis to better constrain the timing and mechanism for this fault‐controlled dolomitisation. Field relationships demonstrate dolomitisation was multi‐phase and initiated after the main phase of matrix pore‐occluding calcite cementation on the Derbyshire Platform and terminated prior to the main phase of mineralisation. Fluids are interpreted to have fluxed from adjacent basins, primarily along strike‐slip crustal faults that were reactivated during basin inversion at the onset of the Variscan Orogeny. Fluid supply was episodic and progressively confined to fractures as matrix porosity became occluded. The study demonstrates the complex interplay between basin kinematics, host rock permeability and timing of fluid supply through seismic valving along faults that connect the carbonate platform to basin compartments. This ultimately controlled the position of dolomite geobodies along faults and provides a record of fluid flow during the transition from thermal subsidence to post‐rift basin inversion. The findings have implications for the exploration of both minerals and hydrocarbon within dolomitised host rocks and can inform studies of fluid transfer and reaction on carbonate platforms within the burial realm. Fault controlled dolomitisation within Visean carbonates formed along strike‐slip faults activated by basin inversion during the Variscan Orogeny. Fluids were sourced from adjacent hanging wall basins. As porosity was reduced by dolomitisation, fluids were forced under pressure into fracture splays and en echelon normal faults, leading to brecciation.

Natural history museums house numerous previously undescribed species and unknown information hidden in their collections. We describe lower Carboniferous slit-bearing gastropods (Pleurotomariida and Goniasmatidae) from previously unreported gastropod collections made by Jane Longstaff (Jane Donald), one of the pioneering paleontologists of Paleozoic gastropods in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The gastropods were collected from an old quarry near Dalry, Ayrshire, Scotland. The collection consists largely of microgastropods, many of which are unusually well preserved including delicate ornament and larval shells. The collection yields ten species, three of them representing new species. The new data on earliest whorls and other shell features such as the selenizone (the shell region formed by the closure of the shell slit) improved the classification. The new findings confirm that the genus Neilsonia belongs to Pleurotomariida and is distinct from the morphologically convergent Peruvispira (Goniasmatidae). The similarities between Biarmeaspira and Baylea support previous opinions that they are closely related. Furthermore, the collection yields the oldest record of Biarmeaspira, which was previously known only from the Permian. The angulated selenizone (as in Biarmeaspira) evidently evolved several times in Pleurotomariida and the repeated appearance of this character in different groups needs further studies using phylogenetic methods. The gastropods were collected from the Lower Limestone Formation (Visean, Brigantian) near Dalry, Ayrshire, Scotland. The collection consists largely of microgastropods, many of which are unusually well-preserved including delicate ornament and protoconchs (larval shells). Three new pleurotomariidan species are described—Biarmeaspira heidelbergerae new species, Neilsonia seussae new species, Tapinotomaria longstaffae new species—in addition to seven species belonging to BorestusThomas, 1940, Stegocoelia (Stegocoelia) Donald, 1889, Stegocoelia (Hypergonia) Donald, 1892, Donaldospira Batten, 1966, and PlatyzonaKnight, 1945. The caenogastropod-type protoconch is documented for the first time in Hypergonia, which is therefore placed in Goniasmatidae. The new data confirm that NeilsoniaThomas, 1940 (type genus of Neilsoniinae) belongs to Pleurotomariida and is distinct from the morphologically convergent PeruvispiraChronic, 1949 (Goniasmatidae). The selenizone morphology is identical in BiarmeaspiraMazaev, 2006 and Baylea de Koninck, 1883 during their early ontogeny, and Biarmeaspira develops an angulation on the selenizone (the diagnostic feature) in late ontogeny. This corroborates earlier suggestions that Biarmeaspira evolved from Baylea. Biarmeaspira heidelbergerae n. sp. is the first Carboniferous record of Biarmeaspira, which was previously only known from the Permian. The angulated selenizone evidently evolved several times in Pleurotomariida and the repeated appearance of this character in different groups (e.g., Phymatopleuridae, Eotomariidae, Pleurotomariidae) needs further studies using phylogenetic methods.

Foraminifers and conodonts in the Danlu section, South China: implications for the Viséan–Serpukhovian boundary (Mississippian)

The Viséan–Serpukhovian boundary is poorly defined in South China, hampering regional and global stratigraphical correlations. The foraminiferal and conodont distribution of the Baping Formation in the carbonate-slope Danlu section permits the recognition of an interval from the middle Viséan to the uppermost Serpukhovian in a continuous succession. The base of the Serpukhovian in Danlu is recognized by the first occurrences of Janischewskina delicata, Howchinia subplana and questionable ‘Millerella’ tortula. At a slightly younger level, the conodont Lochriea ziegleri is first recorded. A calibration on the first occurrence of L. ziegleri in different basins at a global scale has been revised compared to auxiliary markers within the ammonoids and foraminifers. The late occurrence of L. ziegleri in the Danlu section also supports a lack of synchronicity in the global first occurrence of this taxon. This study calls for the recognition of a new base for the Serpukhovian under a far better correlation between different zonal schemes and fossil groups.

Revisiting the upper Visean mud mounds from Derbyshire (UK): the role of brachiopods in their growth

Several brachiopod-rich mud mounds occur in the upper Visean (Brigantian) of the Derbyshire Carbonate Platform succession in UK. The re-evaluation of the lithofacies architecture of a Derbyshire mud mound complex, developed in an intraplatform middle-ramp environment, led to the recognition of three lithofacies associations: (a) a 10 m thick basal unit of automicrite boundstone with siliceous sponge spicules and brachiopod–bryozoan packstone to wackestone beds; (b) a 10 m thick, 250 m wide, lens-shaped, convex-up massive core of clotted peloidal micrite and fenestellid bryozoan boundstone with sponge spicules; (c) inclined brachiopod–bryozoan–crinoid packstone flank beds. In the mud mound complex core, most of the carbonate mud with clotted peloidal and structureless micrite fabric is the result of biologically induced and influenced in-situ precipitation processes (automicrite). Brachiopods are not, as previously thought, limited to storm-scoured “pockets” in the mud mound complex core but are abundant and diverse in all lithofacies and lived on the irregular mud mound complex surface concentrating in depressions sustained by automicrite boundstone and the growth of bryozoans and sponges. The upper Visean Derbyshire mud mounds are, thus, representatives of a newly defined fenestellid bryozoan–brachiopod–siliceous sponge mud mound category, occurring in various middle–upper Visean Western European sites, a sub-type of the fenestellid bryozoan–crinoid–brachiopod Type 3 buildups of Bridges et al. (1995). These mud mounds, and other types of brachiopod-rich buildups, developed in carbonate platform settings between fair-weather and storm wave base, in dysphotic environments with dispersed food resources during the Visean. Brachiopod mud mound colonisation was favoured by moderate water depth, availability of food resources, and diverse substrates.

Middle Visean (Mississippian) conodonts from shallow-water deposits in the Yashui section, Guizhou, South China, and their stratigraphic significance

In southern Guizhou, South China, there are well-exposed shallow-water deposits of the Jiusi and Shangsi formations, which consist of platform limestones mixed with shales and sandstones. Conodonts, ancient tooth-like fossils, were found in the limestones and were dominated by two groups: the Cavusgnathus aff. Cav. unicornis and Clydagnathus windsorensis in the upper Jiusi Formation and the Cavusgnathus unicornis in the lowest Shangsi Formation. Vogelgnathus campbelli with small lateral denticles was found for the first time in Eastern Paleotethys. The Cavusgnathus unicornis is used as a marker for the regional Shangsian stage and correlated to other conodont zones marked by similar species in North America and Europe of middle Visean. The typical Mississippian shallow-water deposits of the Jiusi and Shangsi formations are well exposed in the Yashui section in southern Guizhou, South China. The strata are composed mainly of platform limestones intercalated with shales and sandstones. Conodonts obtained from the limestones are dominated by two assemblages of cavusgnathids: the Cavusgnathus aff. Cav. unicornis and Clydagnathus windsorensis assemblage from the upper Jiusi Formation and the Cavusgnathus unicornis assemblage from the lowest Shangsi Formation. Vogelgnathus campbelli (Rexroad, 1957) is reported for the first time in Eastern Paleotethys and is characterized by small lateral denticles. The evolutionary first occurrence of Cavusgnathus unicornisYoungquist and Miller, 1949 is recognized as a marker for the regional Shangsian stage. This biostratigraphic datum is interpreted to be correlative with other shallow-water conodont zones marked by Cavusgnathus unicornis s.l. and similar species from North America and Europe.
