Modeling arithmetic systems of elliptic curve cryptography using Microsoft Excel VBA
2024
Purpose. This study aims to develop a new teaching module to illustrate the arithmetic systems of Elliptic Curve Cryptography, a powerful yet simple algorithm for information security, by exploring the capability of the Visual Basic Applications of Microsoft Excel in user friendly way. Methodology. The research is performed using research and development approach, which is divided into five steps utilizing VBA features of Microsoft Excel. It starts with modeling arithmetic in Microsoft Excel spreadsheet, then testing the validity through calculation and setup of the actual arithmetic of Elliptic Curve Cryptography using VBA Excel, before performing the test of the VBA application and finally visualizes the results in graphical mode. Findings. Novel teaching software based on of Microsoft Excel Visual Basic Applications is produced that is able to simulate arithmetic system behind Elliptic Curve Cryptography in an easy way for students. Originality. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first simulation based on Excel VBA to illustrate the arithmetic systems of Elliptic Curve Cryptography for teaching purposes. Practical value. In general, mastering cryptography will need a steep learning curve; however, using Microsoft Excel as a simulation platform will accelerate learning. The main practical value is the ease of Microsoft Excel, which will turn cryptography learning which was commonly very difficult for student to become easier and user friendly.

Thermodynamic Prediction of Scale Formation in Oil Fields During Water Injection: Application of SPsim Program Through Utilizing Advanced Visual Basic Excel Tool
2024
This study focuses on the design and validation of a computer program named “SPsim”, developed using Visual Basic coding and advanced Excel tools to predict the formation of sulfate mineral deposits during water injection in oil fields. Water injection for secondary oil recovery is an effective economic strategy, but it can be negatively impacted by the formation of sulfate minerals such as calcium sulfate, gypsum, barium sulfate, and strontium sulfate. The results of this study demonstrate that SPsim can accurately predict the formation of these mineral deposits based on the composition of the formation water and injection water under various temperature and pressure conditions. Specifically, the formation of barium sulfate and calcium sulfate is observed under certain conditions, which is a significant concern in oil fields. The study also highlights that calcium sulfate, barium sulfate, and strontium sulfate are among the most challenging mineral deposits in the studied fields, while the formation of gypsum deposits is less significant. The program was compared with results from other software tools, such as ScaleChem 3.2 and StimCad 2, as well as field observations. The findings indicate that SPsim provides a reliable and effective tool for predicting and managing sulfate scaling in water injection operations, making it a valuable resource for both industrial and academic applications.

Supply Chain Management (SCM) has gained the attention of business organizations as it affects corporate efficiency and competitive advantage. Component outsourcing is an important element of SCM practices and is considered to be a multi-criteria decision-making problem (MCDM) in vendor selection processes. However, decision-making on the selection of vendors is crucial, as the outsourcing program is influenced by multiple technical and commercial criteria of vendors. Developing an Excel-based Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) model for vendor selection therefore helps to simplify selection processes. In this paper, a Visual Basic Application (VBA) Excel-based AHP model was developed, which multiple criteria, sub-criteria and vendors and simultaneously compared with multiple main criteria, sub-criteria and alternatives for vendor selection. The model was validated with a case study of selecting a vendor for module components of body-in-white (BIW) in automotive industry as industrial application. As a result, vendor A is the best vendor since it has the highest overall score of 0.35206. Whereas vendor B is 0.239, vendor C is 0.126, vendor D is 0.146 and vendor E 0.135. In addition, the model is capable of resolving other MCDM problems. This paper provides resources such as AHP methodology, validating method and VBA code programming to readers in developing their own VBA Excel-based model.

Simulation of 1D Gaussian Wave Packet and 2D Waves in Square Membrane Using Excel Spreadsheet with Visual Basic for Teaching Activity
2018
The aim of this study is to demonstrate 1D Gaussian wave packet propagation and 2D wave deflection in a square membrane using the excel interactive spreadsheets with the Visual Basic for Application (VBA) programming. It is based on the analytic solution of Gaussian packet wave propagation in x direction and 2D wave propagation in square membrane. The vibration modes of 2D wave are determined by using differential equation and initial conditions. The simulation based on the spread sheets functions and facilities has been explored to show the 1D and 2D moving objects in transitional processes. This instrument is very useful both in teaching activity and learning process of wave physics. Visualizing of the vibration of wave in the square membrane show a very clear manner of m and n vibration modes of the wave. There for, in the Gaussian packet waves with the superposition processes between those waves show that the amplitude shifted in a different manner.
