When Colleges Sang is an illustrated history of the rich
culture of college singing from the earliest days of the American
republic to the present. Before fraternity songs, alma maters,
and the
rahs of college fight songs became commonplace, students
sang. Students in the earliest American colleges created their
own literary melodies that they shared with their classmates. As
J. Lloyd Winstead documents in
When Colleges Sang , college singing expanded in
conjunction with the growth of the nation and the American higher
education system. While it was often simply an entertaining
pastime, singing had other subtle and not-so-subtle effects.
Singing indoctrinated students into the life of formal and
informal student organizations as well as encouraged them to
conform to college rituals and celebrations. University faculty
used songs to reinforce the religious practices and ceremonial
observances that their universities supported. Students used
singing for more social purposes: students sang to praise their
peer’s achievements (and underachievements), mock the
faculty, and provide humor. In extreme circumstances, they sang
to intimidate classmates and faculty, and to defy college
authorities. Singing was, and is, an intrinsic part of campus
culture.
When Colleges Sang explores the dynamics that inspired
collegiate singing and the development of singing traditions from
the earliest days of the American college. Winstead explores this
tradition’s tenuous beginnings in the Puritan era and

Musician and music historian Sean MacLeod surveys the hundreds of girl groups that appeared not only in the United States but also in Great Britain during the early 1960s. This study corrects the neglect of their critical contribution of popular music history by exploring the social and political climate from which the girl groups emerged and their effect, in turn, on local and national music and culture. MacLeod organizes his argument around seven leading girl groups: The Shirelles, The Crystals, The Ronettes, The Marvelettes, The Vandellas, the Supremes and The Shangri-Las. These seven \"sister\" groups serve as the basis for a broader look at the many girl groups of the period, offering a roadmap through the work of the many stakeholder--the singers, songwriters, producers, and record labels--that the girl group phenomenon made possible. MacLeod also reviews the significant influence girl groups had on the many male bands of the 1960s, as well as their influence on the post-'60s movements, from punk to new wave, ultimately serving as the template for the girl groups and all-girl bands that emerged in the 1980s. Finally, The Leaders of the Pack brings us to the present as MacLeod compares the original girl groups with female performers of today, drawing lines of connection and contrast between them.

Early in the morning on June 1, 1953, five African American men boarded a van to make the 200mile trip from Nashville to Memphis for a daylong recording session at the legendary Sun Studios, to be overseen by Sun founder Sam Phillips. One of the two tracks cut that day, “Just Walkin’ in the Rain,” would go on to become a regional R&B hit, Sun Records’ biggest record of the preElvis era. It would, however, be the group’s only hit. They were the Prisonaires, a vocal quintet who had honed their skills while inmates at the Tennessee State Penitentiary in Nashville. In this book, John Dougan tells the story of the Prisonaires, their hit single, and the afterlife of this one remarkable song. The group and the song itself represent a compelling concept: imprisoned men using music as a means of cultural and personal survival. The song was rerecorded by white singer Johnnie Ray, who made it a huge hit in 1956. Over the years, other singers and groups would move the song further away from its origins, recasting the deep emotions that came from creating music in a hostile, controlled environment. The story of the Prisonaires, for all of its triumphs, reflects the disappointment of men caught in a paradoxical search for personal independence while fully cognizant of a future consigned to prison. Their brief career and the unusual circumstances under which it flourished sheds light on the harsh realities of race relations in the pre–Civil Rights South. The book also provides a portrait of Nashville just as it was gaining traction as a nationally recognized music center.
