Bruce W. Wardropper 1919-2004
An obituary for Bruce W. Wardropper, the eminent Hispanist Professor of Romance Language at The Johns Hopkins University who had died on Jan 6, 2004 in Durham NC is presented. Wardropper described the Renaissance elegaic poet as an artist who must recognize death as final, except for some only half-believed-in poetic fictions which he devises to console himself and his fellow-mourners. Death is transmuted through the exercise of the poetic imagination, through the magic power of artistic composition, and through the ability of art to survive human death.
