Evaluating the Impact of Community Attitudes on the Sustainability of 3R Temporary Waste Disposal Sites Using Structural Equation Modeling-Partial Least Square (SEM-PLS) in Sukoharjo
In 2023, the waste management situation in Sukoharjo showed a combination of achievements and difficulties. Out of the 12 Temporary Waste Disposal Sites with 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) facilities, only 4, including Temporary Waste Disposal Sites with 3R (Temporary Waste Disposal Sites 3R) Anugrah Palur, were functioning at their best. This study examines the factors that impact the establishment and long-term viability of these facilities, employing a combination of research methods that incorporates RAP-Temporary Waste Disposal Sites 3R analysis, partial least squares (SEM-PLS), observations, and interviews. The results emphasize that attitude is the most influential component in supporting the growth of Temporary Waste Disposal Sites with 3R, as indicated by a p-value of 0.000. On the other hand, knowledge (0.052) and behavior (0.279) are identified as the least important aspects that hinder development. The Temporary Waste Disposal Sites with 3R have an overall sustainability rating of 72.79, which classifies them as ‘very sustainable.’ The environmental component achieved a score of 79.54, the social dimension scored 72.88, the management and infrastructure dimension scored 71.30, and the economic dimension scored 65.44. These findings emphasize the crucial importance of community attitudes in promoting sustainable waste management practices. They also highlight specific areas that can be improved to enhance the effectiveness and sustainability of Temporary Waste Disposal Sites with 3R facilities.
Sustainability Evaluation of Waste Management Using RAPWASTE Method at the 3R Temporary Waste Disposal Site in Yogyakarta City
The waste problem has become a big problem in Indonesia as the population continues to grow. The daily amount of waste generated in Yogyakarta City is 303.13 tons.day-1, with the composition of the largest waste source, namely household waste, around 63.75%. This data shows that there is a need for improvements related to management; 3R Temporary Waste Disposal Sites is an alternative for reducing waste before it is transported to the final processing place. This research aims to understand performance and waste transportation management and evaluate the level of waste management and sustainability of waste management at 3R Temporary Waste Disposal Sites Nitikan Yogyakarta. This research was conducted on 99 respondents using a purposive sampling method; the data analysis used was the evaluation of waste transportation, analysis of incoming, managed, and unmanaged waste data, categorization of questionnaire data, evaluation of waste management performance and analysis of the sustainability of waste management using RAPFISH software. The research results show that waste volume management at 3R Temporary Waste Disposal Sites Nitikan is 941.15 kg.day-1, and compost production is 190.65 kg.day-1. Transport management is carried out using the Stationary Container System (SCS) and is carried out 2 times. The evaluation of waste management performance is moderate, with a total relative value of 15.4, based on studies on the technical sector, institutional sector, financial sector, and the area of community participation. Based on the attribute index in each sector, it is concluded that the sustainability status of waste sorting and management at 3R Temporary Waste Disposal Sites Nitikan is 79.03, or very sustainable.

Assessment of the performance of engineered waste containment barriers
President Carter's 1980 declaration of a state of emergency at Love Canal, New York, recognized that residents' health had been affected by nearby chemical waste sites. The Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, enacted in 1976, ushered in a new era of waste management disposal designed to protect the public from harm. It required that modern waste containment systems use \"engineered\" barriers designed to isolate hazardous and toxic wastes and prevent them from seeping into the environment. These containment systems are now employed at thousands of waste sites around the United States, and their effectiveness must be continually monitored. Assessment of the Performance of Engineered Waste Containment Barriers assesses the performance of waste containment barriers to date. Existing data suggest that waste containment systems with liners and covers, when constructed and maintained in accordance with current regulations, are performing well thus far. However, they have not been in existence long enough to assess long-term (postclosure) performance, which may extend for hundreds of years. The book makes recommendations on how to improve future assessments and increase confidence in predictions of barrier system performance which will be of interest to policy makers, environmental interest groups, industrial waste producers, and industrial waste management industry.

Revealing subsurface structure at the former municipal solid waste disposal site Leuwi Gajah of Cimahi Town by using geophysical data: a preliminary result
Municipal solid waste disposal site Leuwi Gajah, situated in Cimahi, is near Bandung City. It was a vast open dumping site closed in 2006 due to a harmful geological hazard in 2005, causing hundreds of victims’ deaths. After 16 years of the tragedy, Bandung local government planned for the former municipal solid waste to become a food field with high technology that benefits the community around the area. We applied the Electromagnetic Induction (EMI) technique to image the study area’s subsurface structure as a non-invasive geophysical method. We collected apparent electrical conductivity (ECa) and apparent susceptibility data from the study site in a gridded pattern to map their distribution using EM-38 MK-2 technology. We chose three sites to map those parameter values: site 1, site 2, and site 3. Site 1 is cassava cultivation land by the community. Site 2 is the boundary between former waste and non-waste land, and site 3 is the same land as site 1 but has a steeper slope (20°). The selection of sites 1 and 3 compares land at higher and lower elevations affected by the former landfill landslide. Site 2 shows the difference in characteristics between waste and non-waste land. Our research in the study area delivers good results. First, we can identify the boundaries of waste and non-waste material, as shown in the low susceptibility value at site 2. This identification is probably related to the thermo-remanent magnetization that results from burning waste. On the other hand, water content influences the distribution of ECa values. Moreover, topography has effects that cause water accumulation in certain areas at sites 1 and 3. These findings recommend using other geophysical methods to detect the boundary between the waste deposit body and underlying bedrock and to characterize the waste body.

Virtually all forms of pollution migrate, subjected to natural forces such as wind and water currents. The movement of garbage, however, is under human control. Its patterns of migration reveal much about power sharing among state, local, and national institutions, about the Constitution's protection of trash transport as a commercial activity, and about competing notions of social fairness. InGarbage In, Garbage Out,Vivian Thomson looks at Virginia's status as the second-largest importer of trash in the United States and uses it as a touchstone for exploring the many controversies around trash generation and disposal. Political conflicts over waste management have been felt at all levels of government. Local governments who want to manage their own trash have fought other local governments hosting huge landfills that depend on trash generated hundreds of miles away. State governments have tried to avoid becoming the dumping grounds for cities hundreds of miles away. The constitutional questions raised in these battles have kept interstate trash transport on Congress's agenda since the early 1990s. Whether the resulting legislative proposals actually address our most critical garbage-related problems, however, remains in question. Thomson sheds much-needed light on these problems. Within the context of increased interstate trash transport and the trend toward privatization of waste management, she examines the garbage issue from a number of perspectives--including the links between environmental justice and trash management, a critical evaluation of the theoretical and empirical relationship between economic growth and environmental improvement, and highlighting the ways in which waste management practices in the US differ from those in the European Union and Japan. Thomson then provides specific, substantive recommendations for our own policymakers. Everything eventually becomes trash.
