Emigration and immigration -- Social aspects
2020,2021
This book lays out a framework for understanding connections between home and
mobility, and situates this within a multidisciplinary field of social research. The
authors show how the idea of home offers a privileged entry point into forced
migration, diversity and inequality. Using original fieldwork, they adopt an
encompassing lens on labour, family and refugee flows, with cases of migrants from
Latin America, Africa and the Indian subcontinent.
With the book structured around these key topics, the authors look at how practices
of home and mobility emerge along with emotions and manifold social processes. In
doing so, their scope shifts from the household to streets, neighbourhoods, cities
and even nations. Yet, the meaning of ‘home’ as a lived experience goes beyond
place; the authors analyse literature on migration and mobility to reveal how the
past and future are equally projected into imaginings of home.
Intersections of Displacement
2015
Refugees are forced to gamble with their lives to flee conflicts, and if they arrive at their intended destination unscathed, they may face the turbulent prospect of asylum defined by a meagre existence, social exclusion, poverty, and even homelessness. Operating at different scales and imagined places, homelessness and asylum seeking are issues of fundamental social justice typically viewed as a problem of cities and crises of national and international concern respectively. However, over the past two decades in particular, the increasing and volatile numbers of asylum seekers arriving in the West have created a new form of homelessness, mainly hidden, often vulnerable, and located in the interstices of international and local displacement. Considering refugee settlement in London, England, and Toronto, Canada, this book argues that this new form of homelessness also requires a new perspective in order to be properly understood, and this perspective should come from refugees themselves. Two main questions are considered: \"How do refugees conceive, locate, and reconstruct 'home' in the asylum and settlement process?\" and \"How do national and residential dynamics affect refugees' sense of home or homelessness?\" Drawing on structuration theory amongst other ideas, the book examines the relationship between \"refugeeness\" and homelessness, and how each is shaped in the countries of asylum. Managed migration strategies in Canada and deterrent migration strategies in the UK have a profound effect on refugees' perceptions of belonging and acceptance, equality, and the desire and ability to make a home for themselves. In addition to shaping notions of belonging, national support and services (or the lack thereof) structure the pathways to homelessness, revealing distinct trajectories amongst refugees in London and Toronto. The author's proceeds from the
sale of this book will be contributed to the Canadian Council for Refugees.

Resisting the Place of Belonging
2013,2016
People often overlook the uncanny nature of homecomings, writing off the experience of finding oneself at home in a strange place or realizing that places from our past have grown strange. This book challenges our assumptions about the value of home, arguing for the ethical value of our feeling displaced and homeless in the 21st century. Home is explored in places ranging from digital keyboards to literary texts, and investigates how we mediate our homecomings aesthetically through cultural artifacts (art, movies, television shows) and conceptual structures (philosophy, theology, ethics, narratives). In questioning the place of home in human lives and the struggles involved with defining, defending, naming and returning to homes, the volume collects and extends ideas about home and homecomings that will inform traditional problems in novel ways.

2020
One branch of civil engineering is construction engineering, geared primarily towards humans. However, this branch also includes buildings designed for animals called animal housing (dwellings or shelters or corrals). Like physical spaces for humans, animal housing requires sufficient conditions for an occupation that guarantees the performance of indoor activities pleasantly and comfortably. One of the parameters for characterizing and classifying the penned livestock farm environment is the thermal comfort range that reflects the indoor temperature behavior for animal welfare, together with other climatic elements such as relative humidity. This research carried out fieldwork to evaluate the thermal environment of pigpens located in Palmira, Colombia, in the time range between 07:00 and 21:00 hours. Using thermometers and hygrometers, we recorded and analyzed the indoor temperature behavior within the thermal comfort range associated with relative humidity for the well-being of pigs. The records made it possible to calculate humidity and temperature index and humidity and black globe temperature index. According to the results, the pig rearing environment was classified as critical for breeding pigs and newborn piglets, suggesting the use of controlled environment systems in pig facilities. In conclusion, monitoring the climatic environment by criteria that combine air temperature and relative humidity is a useful tool for planning pig facilities.

This book critically analyses the contemporary home and its close relationship to fear and security, a relationship fuelled by the corporate and political manufacturing of fear, the triumph of neoliberal models of home-ownership and related modes of social individualisation and risk that permeate contemporary society.
How shelter pets are brokered for experimentation
2010
Back in the 1940s, the practice referred to as Opound seizureO became a common practice in taxpayer-funded animal shelters across the country. Whether for cosmetic testing, human or animal drug testing, medical technique and tool testing, or biochemical testing, these once-family pets are subjected to experimentation that often ends in death. While many states fail to keep accurate data, the number of pets that become victims of pound seizure easily reaches the thousands and though most citizens are unaware of the practice, it may very well be happening at their local animal shelter. Pound seizure remains a dirty little secret in American society, but the practice is moving toward extinction with the help of local citizens advocating for change at their shelter, as well as animal rescue and welfare organizations providing assistance and advocacy. Learning more about the practice, as well as alternatives, will help give readers a fuller picture of whatOs happening in American animal shelters and what they can do to stem the tide of dealers and brokers sweeping off animals to their almost-certain demise.
A parte do mundo que me pertence

Ordinary people in search of their small daily desires. A work on minimal private spheres, which reveals that part of the greatness of the human being resides in the subtleties of his small gestures. An intimate look and committed to what we are, from sun to sun, behind the walls and roofs of a city.
