Basically Baker, Volume 2 - The Big Band Music of David Baker
2017
Blomington, IN, June 22-23, 2016 The Harlem Pipes/The Georgia Peach (4)/Walt's Barbershop/Soft Summer Rain (4)/Black Thursday/Shima 13/Bebop/Honesty (2)/25th And Martindale/Kirsten's First Song (1, 3)/Terrible T. TT 91:40 This album by the Buselli-Wallarab Jazz Orchestra honors David N. Baker (1931-2016), master trombonist, cellist, j azz and classical composer and jazz education pioneer who headed the prestigious Indiana University jazz studies program for nearly 50 years. Walt's Barbershop is a refreshing calypso sounding piece with Breedlove loose and lyrical on trumpet and Rob Dixon on rolling tenor, sailing away over the rhythm section's propulsion. There's a fugue like opening to Black Thursday that turns into a gentle swinger, with Sears (as) and Busulli on muted trumpet taking solos over a smooth trombone laced ensemble.
