CHINESE BOXERS LEARNING ROPES FROM PATERSON NATIVE ROSARIO
\"They're all talented,\" [Diego Rosario] said of the Chinese prospects. \"The heavyweight can punch and he's tall. We're just working on adding some things that'll help him get better.\" \"I always respected Diego as a boxer,\" said [Duva], whose family's company, Main Events, promoted many of the cards on which Rosario fought during the 1980s. \"He was very crafty. And I always respected him as a trainer. He has trained guys who were world champions, had experience with heavyweights, and he's a local guy. That's why I thought it would be a good match.\"
Jiankui completes first home-made DVD player
The MPEG II standards enable the a DVD to store as much as 17G of information and can play up to nine hours, said Wang Zhimin, chief engineer of [Jiankui]. Although technically advanced, the DVD player faces serious challenges in the Chinese market, said an industry insider. He reasoned that the VCD (Video Compact Disc) players are very popular in China and the high price of DVDs, about 200 yuan ($24.1) apiece, will make most Chinese consumers hesitant to buy the DVD players. The State Planning Commission authorized Jiankui to develop the DVD players in 1995.
Traditional medicines make delicate advance
[Xuan]'s success in studying the chemical compounds of TCM at the molecular level has carved a trail for TCM manufacturers to take up challenges in the intense competition in alternative medicine world. Wang Xudong, a professor at Nanjing University of TCM, complained that under the name of TCM modernization, more and more TCM doctors began to pursue modern chemistry theories and medical practice, losing their basic skills in treating patients with rich and accumulated experience. \"It is natural that some of the old TCM theories might be lost, even if they are still effective in the contexts of traditional TCM practice. But on the whole, screening TCM compounds can give us new and more accurate knowledge, which can also be used scientifically to explain some of the complicated old theories,\" Wang said.
Chinese official discusses water shortage, pollution
Though quite a very significant measure, however, observed [Wei Zhimin], the project cannot resolve the root problem of water shortage in the whole country. \"The crux of matter rests with the formation of a water-saving society and the ecological recovery,\" Wei said. Keenly aware of the crisis of water shortage, the capital of Beijing is working out the \"most rigid water resource management rules to guarantee water supply\". Bi Xiaogang, deputy director of the Beijing municipal bureau of water conservancy, said Beijing is carrying out a quota programme of industry water use to encourage water saving among enterprises. While technological renovation aimed to facilitate water saving is introduced among the national capital's enterprises, farmers are also encouraged to turn to water-saving crops and irrigation methods. The municipality also turned over 1,700 hectares of farmland near the Miyun Reservoir, its major water supplier, into pastures and forests. Water Resource Minister [Wang Shucheng] noted that the country still has a great potential of water saving, as most consumers, both enterprises and individuals, are not yet cost- effective-conscious in water consumption and there is still enormous room to tap more water through saving methods. The charging reform on water consumption is only one of the essential measures to encourage water saving, Wang said. The balance between water resources and human demand, acknowledged the minister, finally hinges on the people's consciousness of water saving both in daily life and production.
Chinese agency: Olympics to have long-term benefit to Beijing's \liveability\
As governments, both at the central and municipal levels, have summoned all resources available to honour the promise of a \"Great Olympics,\" even grassroots governmental staffers were aware the Olympics-related work stood at the top of the daily agenda. \"This has turned the Olympics into a giant impetus to end buck-passing culture and curb red-tape bureaucracy,\" [Lin Zhiwei] said. \"After seven years of preparations, most governmental departments felt it a mission impossible to build the 'New Beijing' without support from other departments,\" [Wang Wei] said. \"They recognized the significance of cooperation and came to know the good of it.\" Fully aware these projects had been interpreted as \"face-saving projects\" by the public, planner [Tan Zhimin] admitted the Chinese were indeed face-concerned. \"When it comes to the Olympic preparations and the building of a 'New Beijing,' however, it's more than a matter of face-saving.\"
