The Statistical Account of Scotland, known also as the Old Statistical Account, was compiled by Sir John Sinclair and published in twenty-one volumes between 1791 and 1799. Sinclair and his work are little known to statisticians today, but the Old Statistical Account remains a unique record for historians of demography, economics, and social studies. The object here is to explain how the Old Statistical Account came to be compiled, describe Sinclair's methods and outlook, and assess the importance of his statistical work.
