Wessel fifth in Oliver 10K running race
Kaleden's Scott Tremblay, who won the 2007 Okanagan International Marathon, won the race in 35 minutes even. David Matheson of Penticton took second place in 36:06, while Penticton's Sergio Pio was third in 36:12. Other age group winners from Kelowna were Diane Leonard, who captured the women's 60 to 64 class in 52:05, and Min Rayson, the top runner in the women's 65 to 69 group in 58:30.

[Joe Wessel] said he ended up in the mortgage industry \"by chance.\" He was coaching for the Philadelphia Eagles and his contract wasn't renewed. \"As coaches, we always joke about what we'd be doing if we weren't coaching,\" Wessel said. \"I would never have guessed I would be in mortgage banking. But the company thrives on teamwork. It pushes people to better themselves. I fit in here like a hand in a glove,\" he said. \"It fits what I'm all about.\" A native of Miami, Wessel attended Florida State University, where he played defensive back and set several Seminoles records: most punts blocked in a single game (two), most touchdowns scored on blocked punts in a game (two), and most touchdowns scored on blocked punts in a season (four). Wessel also scored a touchdown on a blocked punt in the 1984 Citrus Bowl. Wessel, 43, graduated from FSU in 1984 with a bachelor's degree in marketing and business.He was a defensive coach for Louisiana State University from 1985 to 1990, then moved to Notre Dame, where he also was defensive coach from 1991 to 1993. From 1994 to 1996, Wessel was defensive coach and special teams coach for the Cincinnati Bengals, then joined the Philadelphia Eagles in 1997 as special teams coach. A year later, he was out of football and in the mortgage business in Tampa.
Wessel getting revved up for national road race
[Joe Wessel] will compete in the masters A division in the time trials (20 km) on Thursday and in the full-length road race of 115 km on Friday. Wessel heads into the event as the reigning B.C. masters champion. Earlier this month, he cruised to victory in Vancouver finishing the 78 km provincial race in two hours, five minutes. During the nationals, Wessel will have at least a passing familiarity with the surroundings in Quebec City.
Injury gives Wessel renewed passion for his sport of dualthon
Just four months after a ruptured appendix landed Joe Wessel in the hospital, he was able to claim victory at the B.C. Dualthlon. Wessel, 29, won the dualthlon held in Penticton in May despite the drawbacks of surgery. \"I would say when I first got to know Joe, he was a junior competitor,\" said [KC Emerson], who's known Wessel for 10 years. \"I've seen him come up through the ranks over the years. But he is quite committed to his career and being involved (in athletics) and having that balance in his life.\"

It was 1-2-3 for three South Okanagan triathletes in the Man of Steel Triathalon with Geoff Waterman 1:31:32, Joe Wessel 1:31:39, and Chris Bergstrom 1:36:45.
WESSEL'S WALK-ON DUTIES COULD COME TO AN END
Months passed and all the prime vacancies were filled before [Joe Wessel] was contacted by Notre Dame defensive coordinator Gary Darnell. When Darnell coached at Florida and Wessel at LSU, the two had gravitated together during conference meetings to talk shop. Darnell knew of Joe's gutty character as a player and liked what he heard in coaching patter. So he talked Irish coach Lou Holtz into offering Joe the vacant volunteer spot on the Notre Dame coaching staff.
