Guardian angels of the road jump to it in treacherous conditions
IN 27 YEARS as a patrol driver with the Royal Automobile Club (RAC), there's very little Richard Whyte hasn't seen. He's towed a VW motorhome, complete with bride, groom and parents, to their wedding at Gretna Green; he's witnessed helicopters stuck in fields being jump-started by colleagues; he's even seen a fleet of patrol vans on the platform at Waverley station trying to jump-start a stranded locomotive. He has, though, never seen it this bad. \"That's rare, though, because on the whole 99 per cent of people are incredibly friendly and are just pleased to see you,\" says Whyte. \"There's the odd whinger, but there are less than you would imagine.\" Just as we're leaving Larkhall, a priority message comes through. There's a woman who's almost nine-months' pregnant and on her way to Rottenrow maternity hospital in Glasgow, but she's broken down on the M8. Motorway cases get priority anyway because the police only give 50 minutes to move broken-down cars before they get towed, but with such a heavily pregnant woman on board, all the stops are pulled out. Whyte's straight on the phone to her to say he's on his way, but the woman has managed to get the car off the motorway and has parked up in the car park of what was once the Calder Park Zoo. Another patrolman has got to her first and the emergency is over.

Colleague's silence in court clears constable of assault in the cells
The 23-year-old had been taken to Bucksburn Police Station by Mr [Constable Andrew Aiton] and Miss McIvor after returning a positive result in a roadside breath test. Mr [Richard Whyte] admitted telling Miss McIvor he thought Aiton was 'a bit of an a**e'. Mr Aiton had faced two charges, one of assaulting Mr Whyte in a police cell and another of attempting to pervert the course of justice by falsely stating to Miss McIvor that it was he who had been assaulted by Mr Whyte. 'I wish I hadn't now. It was just an off-the-cuff remark.' She said that Mr Aiton then entered the cell and said to Mr Whyte 'Call me an a**e would you?' She then declined to answer any further questions saying: 'I have taken advice from my solicitor and do not wish to answer.' Mr Aiton's lawyer David Hunter later said that his client was happy with the result but declined to comment further.
