The Promise of Wilderness
From Denali's majestic slopes to the Great Swamp of central New Jersey, protected wilderness areas make up nearly twenty percent of the parks, forests, wildlife refuges, and other public lands that cover a full fourth of the nation's territory. But wilderness is not only a place. It is also one of the most powerful and troublesome ideas in American environmental thought, representing everything from sublime beauty and patriotic inspiration to a countercultural ideal and an overextension of government authority. The Promise of Wilderness examines how the idea of wilderness has shaped the management of public lands since the passage of the Wilderness Act in 1964. Wilderness preservation has engaged diverse groups of citizens, from hunters and ranchers to wildlife enthusiasts and hikers, as political advocates who have leveraged the resources of local and national groups toward a common goal. Turner demonstrates how these efforts have contributed to major shifts in modern American environmental politics, which have emerged not just in reaction to a new generation of environmental concerns, such as environmental justice and climate change, but also in response to changed debates over old conservation issues, such as public lands management. He also shows how battles over wilderness protection have influenced American politics more broadly, fueling disputes over the proper role of government, individual rights, and the interests of rural communities; giving rise to radical environmentalism; and playing an important role in the resurgence of the conservative movement, especially in the American West. Development Potential Assessment for Wind and Photovoltaic Power Energy Resources in the Main Desert–Gobi–Wilderness Areas of China
The large-scale centralized development of wind and PV power resources is the key to China’s dual carbon targets and clean energy transition. The vast desert–Gobi–wilderness areas in northern and western China will be the best choice for renewable energy development under multiple considerations of resources endowment, land use constraints, technical conditions, and economic level. It is urgent to carry out a quantitative wind and PV resource assessment study in desert–Gobi–wilderness areas. This paper proposed a multi-dimensional assessment method considering the influence of the power grid and transportation infrastructure distributions, which includes three research levels, namely, the technical installed capacity, the development potential, and the development cost. Nine main desert–Gobi–wilderness areas were assessed. The wind and PV technical installed capacities were 0.6 TW and 10.7 TW, and the total development potentials were over 0.12 TW and 1.2 TW, with the full load hours of 2513 and 1759 and the average development costs of 0.28 CNY/kWh and 0.20 CNY/kWh. Finally, this paper proposed the meteorological–electrical division distribution. A case study in the Kubuqi and Qaidam Deserts was carried out on wind–wind and wind–PV collaborative development across different meteorological–electrical divisions, which can reduce by 58% the long-term energy storage capacity and decrease the total system LCOE from 0.488 CNY/kWh to 0.445 CNY/kWh.

Estimating Carbon Stock in Unmanaged Forests Using Field Data and Remote Sensing
Unmanaged forest ecosystems play a critical role in addressing the ongoing climate and biodiversity crises. As there is no commercial interest in monitoring the health and development of such inaccessible habitats, low-cost assessment approaches are needed. We used a method combining RGB imagery acquired using an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), Sentinel-2 data, and field surveys to determine the carbon stock of an unmanaged forest in the UNESCO World Heritage Site wilderness area Dürrenstein-Lassingtal in Austria. The entry-level consumer drone (DJI Mavic Mini) and freely available Sentinel-2 multispectral datasets were used for the evaluation. We merged the Sentinel-2 derived vegetation index NDVI with aerial photogrammetry data and used an orthomosaic and a Digital Surface Model (DSM) to map the extent of woodland in the study area. The Random Forest (RF) machine learning (ML) algorithm was used to classify land cover. Based on the acquired field data, the average carbon stock per hectare of forest was determined to be 371.423 ± 51.106 t of CO2 and applied to the ML-generated class Forest. An overall accuracy of 80.8% with a Cohen’s kappa value of 0.74 was achieved for the land cover classification, while the carbon stock of the living above-ground biomass (AGB) was estimated with an accuracy within 5.9% of field measurements. The proposed approach demonstrated that the combination of low-cost remote sensing data and field work can predict above-ground biomass with high accuracy. The results and the estimation error distribution highlight the importance of accurate field data.
Research on wilderness area identification and distribution of spatial characteristics based on Boolean-multi-indicator evaluation approach —a case study of wilderness areas in Henan Province, China
Under the background of global anthropocene and climate change, as a key spatial unit to maintain the function of native ecosystems, the study of precise identification and spatial distribution of wilderness is of great scientific value to enhance the effectiveness of rewilding practice. Taking the wilderness in Henan Province as a case study area, the thesis constructs the evaluation index system of wilderness in Henan Province by using the Boolean identification and multi-objective evaluation methods based on the analysis of the concept and connotation of wilderness, identifies the spatial distribution of wilderness in Henan Province, and analyzes the current status of protection and the vacancy of protection in Henan Province. The results of the study show that 1) in horizontal space, high-quality wilderness in Henan Province is mainly concentrated in the high-elevation and water-system peripheral areas in the north, west and south, while low-quality wilderness is dominant in the central plains and the periphery of the major transportation arteries. 2) In terms of vertical spatial distribution, the quality of wilderness increases with elevation, with a high proportion of low- and medium-quality wilderness in low-elevation areas, while high-quality wilderness is most distributed in high-elevation (800–1200 m) areas. 3) The area of wilderness in Henan Province is 20,052.60 km 2 , and the area of wilderness covered by nature reserves is only 3,017.40 km 2 , i.e., 84.95% of the existing wilderness is not included in the scope of protection, and there is a large area of protection gaps in the wilderness area, which urgently needs to be strengthened in terms of planning, reasonable protection and management. The results of this study can provide a theoretical basis for the development of scientific and reasonable wilderness protection policies in nature reserves, and are of significance in promoting the in-depth development of wilderness protection in Henan Province.
