This article studies domestic service in Chile, particularly in the province of Concepcion, during the first half of the nineteenth century. The main objective is to characterize the social and labour dynamics involved in domestic service during the first years of the Republic focusing on the study of the testamentary practices of the local elite evidenced through the review and analysis of wills notarized in the city of Concepcion between 1823 and 1856. Methodologically, the selection of wills was carried out in a universe of 315 wills, 73 of which contained bequests to domestic service, and their analysis was carried out both quantitatively and qualitatively. The main conclusions are related to the characterization of the objects bequeathed and to the materialization or agency in the delivery of the bequests. Family, law, and inheritance in America : a social and legal history of nineteenth-century Kentucky
\"Yvonne Pitts explores inheritance practices by focusing on nineteenth-century testamentary capacity trials in Kentucky in which disinherited family members challenged relatives' wills. These disappointed heirs claimed that their departed relative lacked the capacity required to write a valid will. These inheritance disputes criss-crossed a variety of legal and cultural terrains, including ordinary people's understandings of what constituted insanity and justice, medical experts' attempts to infuse law with science, and the independence claims of women. Pitts uncovers the contradictions in the body of law that explicitly protected free will while simultaneously reinforcing the primacy of blood in mediating claims to inherited property. By anchoring the study in local communities and the texts of elite jurists, Pitts demonstrates that 'capacity' was a term laden with legal meaning and competing communal values about family, race relations and rationality. These concepts evolved as Kentucky transitioned from a conflicted border state with slaves to a developing free-labor, industrializing economy\"-- Provided by publisher.

Free will

Even the abyss may be rendered tolerable-or, for that matter, luxurious-furnished with creature comforts so that the unbearable truth of one's condition is overlooked: a pair of lavishly upholstered armchairs, some choice pictures on the wall, bookcases laden with the best that has been thought and said, a sound system worthy of your favorite Beethoven and Brahms recordings, a well-stocked liquor cabinet, soothing overhead track lighting, and strategically placed table lamps to make you almost forget the perpetual darkness outside your walls. Pushing thirty, a stock and bond broker in his uncle's firm, living in a basement apartment in the nondescript New Orleans suburb of Gentilly, Binx at first seems a paragon of the dullest conformity, a surefire candidate for unwitting despair. The unreality of her pedestrian, psychiatrically monitored days and nights weighs her down, and after walking away from psychotherapy and entertaining with amused skepticism a marriage proposal from Binx that is the most feckless ever recorded, she takes an overdose of Nembutal. There is little doubt that Percy, in some vital part of his soul, exults in Emily's hottest animadversions, and certain readers have thought this harangue the author's last word on Binx's spiritual condition.
