Craft theory and contemporary architecture
\"This book offers a comprehensive exploration of craft theory in relation to contemporary architecture. Craft is an old and familiar idea, but the line between craft and art or craft and mere manufacturing, for example, is notoriously hard to describe. In architecture, a similarly blurred line between the design process on one hand and the physical making of buildings on the other lies at the center of various debates about what it means to do architecture. The growth and development of craft theory in recent years suggest new insights into these architectural debates, but situating the meaning of craft within architecture within today's technological landscape is a complex problem. Alford responds to this challenge by collecting various narratives from craft theory and other fields and discerning among them new lenses through which to view contemporary architectural practice. Episodes from this expanded view of craft in architecture go beyond predictable accounts of Ruskin and Morris to envision: new models of practice; new ways of engaging other building professionals; and new ways for architects to understand their own labor and the nature of how and what kinds of things they themselves craft. Architecture is changing and within the ongoing story of craft explored in this book are new and surprising ways to understand, design, and construct the built environment. Written for students and scholars, this book challenges and extends the legacy of craft thinking in architecture\"-- Provided by publisher.

Critical craft : technology, globalization, and capitalism
\"From Oaxacan wood carvings to dessert kitchens in provincial France, Critical Craft presents thirteen ethnographies which examine what defines and makes 'craft' in a wide variety of practices from around the world.Challenging the conventional understanding of craft as a survival, a revival, or something that resists capitalism, the book turns instead to the designers, DIY enthusiasts, traditional artisans, and technical programmers who consider their labor to be craft, in order to comprehend how they make sense of it. The authors' ethnographic studies focus on the individuals and communities who claim a practice as their own, bypassing the question of craft survival to ask how and why activities termed craft are mobilized and reproduced. Moving beyond regional studies of heritage artisanship, the authors suggest that ideas of craft are by definition part of a larger cosmopolitan dialogue of power and identity. By paying careful attention to these sometimes conflicting voices, this collection shows that there is great flexibility in terms of which activities are labelled 'craft'. In fact, there are many related ideas of craft and these shape distinct engagements with materials, people, and the economy. Case studies from countries including Mexico, Nigeria, India, Taiwan, the Philippines, and France draw together evidence based on linguistics, microsociology, and participant observation to explore the shifting terrain on which those engaged in craft are operating. What emerges is a fascinating picture which shows how claims about craft are an integral part of contemporary global change\"-- Provided by publisher.

Research on the Causes and Treatment of Weld Zone Fracture in Cold Rolled High Strength Steel Rolling Process
In response to the poor quality of laser welding of cold-rolled advanced high-strength steel and the problem of easy fracture at the weld seam during the rolling process, the reasons for the fracture at the weld seam were first analysed using scanning electron microscopy and other equipment, to clarify the fracture characteristics and organizational distribution. Combined with the characterization results of mechanical properties, the reasons for the fracture at the weld seam during the rolling process were elucidated; Then, the influence of welding process on weld quality is studied from four aspects: laser power, welding speed, pre heat power, and post heat power; Based on the above analysis, a typical cold rolled advanced high-strength steel laser welding technology has been developed. By optimizing welding parameters such as welding power, speed, and preheating before and after, the quality of the weld seam and the cup protrusion effect have been ensured. At the same time, a reasonable rolling process optimization plan has been proposed; After applying the research results to the site, the quality of the weld seam has been significantly improved, and the occurrence rate of band breakage at the high-strength steel weld seam has decreased from an average of 3.6% per month to 0.13%. The band breakage defect at the weld seam has been effectively treated.
Gauguin : artist as alchemist
\"Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) was a creative force above and beyond his legendary work as a painter. Surveying the full scope of his career-spanning experiments in different media and formats--clay, works on paper, wood, and paint, as well as furniture and decorative friezes--this volume delves into his enduring interest in craft and applied arts, reflecting on their significance to his creative process. Gauguin: Artist as Alchemist draws on extensive new research into the artist's working methods, presenting him as a consummate craftsman--one whose transmutations of the ordinary yielded new and remarkable forms. Beautifully designed and illustrated, this book includes essays by an international team of scholars who offer a rich analysis of Gauguin's oeuvre beyond painting. By embracing other art forms, which offered fewer dominant models to guide his work, Gauguin freed himself from the burden of artistic precedent. In turn, these groundbreaking creative forays, especially in ceramics, gave new direction to his paintings. The authors' insightful emphasis on craftsmanship deepens our understanding of Gauguin's considerable achievements as a painter, draftsman, sculptor, ceramist, and printmaker within the history of modern art\"-- Provided by publisher.
Automated monitoring and warning solution for concrete placement and vibration workmanship quality issues
Placing and vibrating concrete are vital activities that affect its quality. The current monitoring method relies on visual and time-consuming feedbacks by project managers, which can be subjective. With this method, poor workmanship cannot be detected well on the spot; rather, the concrete is inspected and repaired after it becomes hardened. To address the problems of retroactive quality control measures and to achieve real-time quality assurance of concrete operations, this paper presents a monitoring and warning solution for concrete placement and vibration workmanship quality. Specifically, the solution allows for collecting and compiling real-time sensor data related to the workmanship quality and can send alerts to project managers when related parameters are out of the required ranges. This study consists of four steps: (1) identifying key operational factors (KOFs) which determine acceptable workmanship of concrete work; (2) reviewing and selecting an appropriate positioning technology for collecting the data of KOFs; (3) designing and programming modules for a solution that can interpret the positioning data and send alerts to project managers when poor workmanship is suspected; and (4) testing the solution at a certain construction site for validation by comparing the positioning and warning data with a video record. The test results show that the monitoring performance of concrete placement is accurate and reliable. Follow-up studies will focus on developing a communication channel between the proposed solution and concrete workers, so that feedbacks can be directly delivered to them.
Structural Reliability Assessment Including Variability of Reinforcement Cover Based on Measurements on Selected Buildings
This article presents the results of reinforcement cover thickness measurements carried out in several buildings erected in 2022 in Rzeszów. The results of the measurements are presented in two variants depending on the reinforcement cover thickness assumed by the designer: the first variant contains all the results and the second contains results only from places where the designed cover thickness was 25 mm. For both variants, a histogram of the percentage deviation from the design value was determined and mean values, standard deviation, coefficient of variation and maximum values of negative and positive deviation were calculated. The obtained reinforcement cover thickness distributions were used to determine the reliability of a floor slab with a simply supported beam static scheme. Analyses were carried out for 4 slabs differing in span, thickness and selected reinforcement. Using the FORM analytical method, values for the reliability index and probability of failure were determined. The reliability index values obtained were compared with the values required by EC 1990 and ISO 2394. The results obtained did not meet the standard requirements.
