New trends in children's books from Europe and Japan
IN 1984 and 1985, I attended the International Bologna Book Fair to observe trends in foreign children's books. I met with hundreds of publishers' representatives, and spoke with them about new books and publishing trends. I learned that publishers in Europe and those in Japan sell most of their children's books to the general public rather than to institutions, which is the case in the United States. These publishers tend to respond more directly and quickly to their readers' interests. In Japan, books reflect the influence of television; one publisher has even produced a series with built-in background music.
