REVISITING THE FASCIST SUBTEXT OF ATTACK ON TITAN: SOME NOTES ON A MODERN REACTIONARY ANIME 1
2021
Attack on Titan is an ongoing Japanese comic book series written and illustrated by Hajime Isayama, who, growing up in the countryside of Oita Prefecture, Japan,2 landed upon a simple but disturbing truth: Because all living organisms must feed on other living organisms to survive, the world is an inherently cruel place. Humans have, in science fiction, often been flipped by circumstance into serving as dinner for an alien species (even as we actually are for any number of terrestrial species, from bacteria to bears and lions, if we're unlucky). Theories range anywhere from the series' having spun a clever twist on the now-oversaturated but once feverishly popular dystopian fiction and zombie-apocalypse genres, to the artist's supposedly unique ability to capture \"the hopelessness felt by young people\" in modern society.6 But the most interesting-and sinister-of these hypotheses, and one that has only gained in prominence as Attack on Titan approaches its final episode (January 2022), can be traced back to the very moment of the manga's inception: the insidious notion that our world is, fundamentally, cruel. Discriminated against for their ability to turn into Titans-an ability that, Isayama tells us, is linked to their ancient and mythological bloodline, and proclaimed by state propaganda to originate from their ancestor's having once made a pact with the \"devil of all-earth\"-the Eldians are separated from ordinary Marlyan society through internment camps reminiscent of Jewish ghettos, and required by law to wear armbands denoting their race, which are similar in design to the Star of David.8 Of course, Isayama is far from the only artist to draw inspiration from Nazi Germany.

The ancient magus bride : the silver yarn
\"The world of The Ancient Magus' Bride is bigger than Elias and Chise, and many are the folk and spirits who cross their lives' path. Their tales are woven into a tapestry, words like silver yarn, twining together emotions and warmth. Held within these pages are new stories of Kore Yamazaki's fantastic Britain, penned by the author herself and a star-studded lineup of Japanese authors.
Building the Femorabilia Special Collection: Methodologies and Practicalities
2018
In this article I examine the potential of the Femorabilia Collection of Women's and Girls' Twentieth Century Periodicals for the study of girlhood in Britain and the Commonwealth of Nations and I explain why the collection was originally created and describe its current purpose and policy to promote future research. I consider the importance of material and reading cultures as well as approaches to understanding the content of these varied publications and discuss the difficulties of working with mass culture, ephemeral texts, and the problem of obtaining examples, and I consider the collection's particular focus on popular fiction. I consider the development of the collection, examples of methodology and practice, and its use in pedagogy, research, and public engagement.

Zines for social justice: Adolescent girls writing on their own
2004
Despite the popularity of self-published teen zines, few studies have been conducted of the adolescent girls who write and read them. Past research on teens' reading and writing shows that adolescents read and write along stereotypical or gendered lines. This study explores the out-of-school literacy practices of three adolescent girls who write and publish their own zine by writing against gender, race, and class stereotypes. The study identifies what motivates and enables these girls in writing differently on their own and describes how young women use and develop their literacy skills to enable them to form and express their identities. Methods of participant observation were used to address these questions. Findings have implications for student-centered instruction by identifying relevant ways to engage adolescents in literacy activity.
