Bissau, 7th December: Two opposition parties have triumphed ingeneral elections in Guinea-Bissau, together taking 64 of the102 parliamentary seats, according to results available Tuesday[7th December] from the national poll commission. The Party for Social Renewal (PRS), led by Kumba Yalla, took 37seats while the Guinea-Bissau Resistance (RGB) won a total of 27seats, beating the ruling African Party for the Independence ofGuinea-Bissau and Cape Verde (PAIGC), which garnered only 25seats after [the previous] Sunday's [28th November] vote. The PAIGC, which had 62 seats in the previous assembly, will nowlose its long-dominant parliamentary position to the PRS, whichgained 21 seats since the last elections.

New military rulers face African ministers
BISSAU: Guinea-Bissau's new military rulers said they were holding ousted President Kumba Yalla under house arrest yesterday as they prepared to persuade African ministers that he did not deserve to return to power. A West African official said the foreign ministers of Nigeria, Ghana, Gambia, Cape Verde and Senegal were hoping to see Yalla during their visit. Coup leaders have said the former president can either stay or go into exile.

\"As a person, I have nothing against [Kumba Yalla],\" General [Verissimo Correia Seabra] told RTP, according to Lusa news agency. \"He can stay in Guinea-Bissau as well as leave the country. That's up to him.\" A military source told the Portuguese news agency Lusa that Yalla was under arrest. It said troops also wanted to detain Prime Minister Mario Pires, who is in the southern part of the country. Correia said the army was imposing a 7 pm to 7 am curfew.
