Early modern European society took a serious view of blasphemy, and drew upon a wide range of sanctions - including the death penalty - to punish those who cursed, swore and abused God. Whilst such attitudes may appear draconian today, this study makes clear that in the past, blasphemy was regarded as a very real threat to society. Based on a wealth of primary sources, including court records, theological and ecclesiastical writings and official city statutes, Francisca Loetz explores verbal forms of blasphemy and the variety of contexts within which it could occur. Honour conflicts, theological disputation, social and political provocation, and religious self-questioning all proved fertile ground for accusations of blasphemy, and her contention - that blasphemers often meant more than they said - reveals the underlying complexity of an apparently simple concept. This innovative approach interprets cases of verbal blasphemy as 'speech actions' that reflect broader political, social and religious concerns. Cases in Protestant Zurich are compared with the situation in Catholic Lucerne and related to findings in other parts of Europe (Germany, France, England, Italy) to provide a thorough discussion of different historical approaches to blasphemy - ecclesiastical, legal, intellectual, social, and cultural - in the Early Modern period. In so doing the book offers intriguing suggestions about what a cultural history of religiousness could and should be. By linking a broad overview of the issue of blasphemy, with case studies from Zurich and Lucerne, this book provides a fascinating insight into a crucial, but often misunderstood aspect of early-modern society. The conclusions reached not only offer a much fuller understanding of the situation in Zurich, but also have resonance for all historians of Reformation Europe.

Yet an increasing number of healthy people are interested in seeking out the clinic as a form of 'time shelter,' hoping to escape from the horrors of our present, a development that results in an unexpected conundrum, when the past beings to invade the present.

The Swiss theologian Huldrych Zwingli (1484-1531) was one of the most prominent reformers and the founder of the Reformed Protestant Church in the Swiss Confederation. During the last hundred years more than 200 titles from his private library have been discovered. They give an interesting insight into his interests and sources. The present book contains not only an extensive introduction and a catalogue of these books and manuscripts, but also an inventory of the lost works possessed by Zwingli. They open the door to Zwingli's study and to the intellectual world of an important reformer.

Alveolar echinococcosis (AE) is a zoonotic disease of increasing concern worldwide. Before benzimidazole drug therapy, 10-year death rates were 90% without surgical resection. In unresectable patients, long-term benzimidazole therapy is highly effective in stabilizing the disease course. We performed a retrospective study of 334 AE patients treated at the University Hospital Zurich, Zurich, Switzerland, during 1973-2022. Annual diagnoses increased over time, and more cases were detected by chance at earlier stages. Ninety patients died, mostly from causes unrelated to AE. Relative survival of AE patients compared with the population of Switzerland demonstrated a steady decrease 5 years after diagnosis. Patient age at diagnosis was the primary variable associated with overall survival. In a propensity-score matched survival analysis, early curative surgery was associated with overall improvement but not AE-specific survival. We conclude that survival of patients with AE is limited by non-AE causes and that early curative surgery does not improve AE-specific survival.

Die dreizehn Neubauten bieten Wohn- und Arbeitsraum für mehr als 1100 Menschen, sie weisen den Weg für künftiges urbanes Zusammenleben: Neben neuen Typologien für Familien-, Alters-, und Cluster-Wohnungen bietet dieser Stadtbaustein umfangreiche Serviceangebote wie ein Gästehaus, ein Restaurant und eine Mobilitätsstation. Darüber hinaus experimentieren die Planer mit neuen Baumaterialien und innovativen energetischen Konzepten.Eine Initiative von 30 Zürcher Wohnbaugenossenschaften hat seit 2007 das Projekt als Innovationsplattform entwickelt. Im Zentrum des Planungsprozesses steht der Dialog zwischen den Beteiligten. The site development “mehr als wohnen” (“more than living”) in Zurich North is a flagship project for sustainable housing cooperatives. Thirteen new buildings offer living and working space for more than 1,100 people and pave the way for future urban cohabitation. In addition to new typologies for family, retirement, and cluster apartments, this urban communal housing development also includes comprehensive services such as a guesthouse, a restaurant, and a mobility station. The planners are also experimenting with new materials and innovative energy concepts. An initiative of 30 Zurich housing cooperatives has been developing the project “mehr als wohnen” as a platform for innovation since 2007. At the core of the planning process is the dialogue between the different parties. The project is also facing the pressing task of building and living, according to energy and resource-efficient means that go beyond familiar energy labels. The publication combines elements of a book on architecture with sociological analyses. The built projects are documented using a collection of plans that range from master plans to apartment layouts and selected details. In addition, the participating architects, planners, cooperative members, and experts discuss their experiences and provide insight into the background of the cooperatives and of planning processes. They demonstrate how this exemplary site development can be an integral part of the current urban development discourse and reality. They also discuss how urban planning is able to produce sustainable city development.
