Measuring Setup for Experimental Research of Two-Coordinate Fiber-Optic Acceleration Sensors with Cylindrical Lenses
The article presents the possibilities of using fiber-optic acceleration (FOC) sensors on products of rocket-space and aviation technology as part of information-measuring systems. A special measuring device has been developed for experimental confirmation of the main characteristics of the technical characteristics of the developed, two-coordinate fiber-optic acceleration sensors. The developed measuring setup for the experimental research of a two-coordinate fiber-optic acceleration sensor with two, cylindrical lenses fixed on two H-shaped elastic elements deflected under the influence of acceleration in two mutually perpendicular directions X and Y, intended for operation in harsh conditions of rocket and space technology. The experimental equipment consists of the developed setup for setting micromovements and an information conversion unit, including modules for signal conversion, transmission, power supply, signal amplification, and indication. Experimental dependences of the output voltage from the information conversion unit’s output on the micro-displacement in the range corresponding to the micro-displacements of the inertial mass with a cylindrical lens under acceleration in the range of ±100 m/s2 were obtained on the micro-displacement setting unit. The maximum value of the linearity error of the prototype acceleration sensor together with the information conversion unit was 0.07%. The conversion sensitivity of a two-coordinate fiber-optic acceleration sensor per the experimental dependences obtained on the Data Physics LE-612 MST/DSA 10–40 k vibration stand when exposed to sinusoidal vibration with an acceleration amplitude from 2 to 10 g in the frequency range from 5 to 2560 Hz was, on average, 3 mV/m/s2. The conducted experimental research confirms the performance of experimental samples of fiber-optic acceleration sensors together with an information conversion unit, as well as the achievement of high metrological characteristics.
Abnormal Road Surface Recognition Based on Smartphone Acceleration Sensor
In order to identify the abnormal road surface condition efficiently and at low cost, a road surface condition recognition method is proposed based on the vibration acceleration generated by a smartphone when the vehicle passes through the abnormal road surface. The improved Gaussian background model is used to extract the features of the abnormal pavement, and the k-nearest neighbor (kNN) algorithm is used to distinguish the abnormal pavement types, including pothole and bump. Comparing with the existing works, the influence of vehicles with different suspension characteristics on the detection threshold is studied in this paper, and an adaptive adjustment mechanism based on vehicle speed is proposed. After comparing the field investigation results with the algorithm recognition results, the accuracy of the proposed algorithm is rigorously evaluated. The test results show that the vehicle vibration acceleration contains the road surface condition information, which can be used to identify the abnormal road conditions. The test result shows that the accuracy of the recognition of the road surface pothole is 96.03%, and the accuracy of the road surface bump is 94.12%. The proposed road surface recognition method can be utilized to replace the special patrol vehicle for timely and low-cost road maintenance.
Fiber Bragg grating based acceleration sensors: a review
Purpose The purpose of this study is to present the state of the art for fiber Bragg grating (FBG) acceleration sensing technologies from two aspects: the principle of the measurement dimension and the principle of the sensing configuration. Some commercial sensors have also been introduced and future work in this field has also been discussed. This paper could provide an important reference for the research community. Design/methodology/approach This review is to present the state of the art for FBG acceleration sensing technologies from two aspects: the principle of the measurement dimension (one-dimension and multi-dimension) and the principle of the sensing configuration (beam type, radial vibration type, axial vibration type and other composite structures). Findings The current research on developing FBG acceleration sensors is mainly focused on the sensing method, the construction and design of the elastic structure and the design of a new information detection method. This paper hypothesizes that in the future, the following research trends will be strengthened: common single-mode fiber grating of the low cost and high utilization rate; high sensitivity and strength special fiber grating; multi-core fiber grating for measuring single-parameter multi-dimensional information or multi-parameter information; demodulating equipment of low cost, small volume and high sampling frequency. Originality/value The principle of the measurement dimension and principle of the sensing configuration for FBG acceleration sensors have been introduced, which could provide an important reference for the research community.
Using Acceleration Sensors to Diagnose the Operating Condition and to Detect Vibrating Feeder Faults
Vibrating feeders are used to empty bulk materials from storage bins, to feed and dispense materials into weighing bins or dispensers, or to feed materials evenly and smoothly into downstream equipment. The harmonic oscillation of the trough can be provided by an electromagnetic oscillator, which consists of an electromagnet consisting of a core and a coil with a given number of coil turns and armature. The aim of this paper has been to verify whether the working condition of the vibrating feeder, i.e., its fault-free operation and the ability to transport the required mass amount of material, can be described on a basis of the measured vibration values using acceleration sensors. This paper describes three experimental methods that allow us with the use of force sensors to measure the adhesion force of the electromagnet and the deformation force of the bent leaf springs, and the use of acceleration sensors to measure the vibration on the trough and on the steel frame of the vibrating feeder. The highest average value of the effective vibration velocity (56.7 mm·s−1) in the horizontal plane was measured on a steel frame of a vibrating feeder using FR4 Epoxy leaf springs with a stiffness of 47.8 N·mm−1 and a weight of 2.57 kg of conveyed material per trough. The lowest average value of the effective vibration velocity (24.6 mm·s−1) has been measured at a weight of 5.099 kg of material conveyed on the trough. We can state that from the analysis of the measured vibration velocities transmitted to the steel frame of the vibrating feeders, it is possible to monitor the partial phases of their operation and diagnose any faults that may occur. It is also possible to determine whether the optimal amount of bulk material is being loaded onto the trough.
Study on fault characteristic of piezoelectric acceleration sensor
In order to explore the fault characteristics and failure mechanism of the sensor, staring from the working principle and structural characteristics of the piezoelectric acceleration sensor, the problems affecting the quality of the collected signal due to the fault of the component of the sensor are systematically studied. Firstly, according to the application scenario and structural characteristics of this kind of sensor, the main fault forms are analyzed, including: insufficient preload, crystal plate damage, crystal plate side loading and crystal plate phase loading reverse four kinds of faults. Secondly, the signal of the exciter is used to test the above sensors. It is found that except the sensor with insufficient preload does not affect the signal, other fault sensors will make the collected signal amplitude smaller, but the signal frequency does not change. In order to verify the accuracy of the exciter test results, the sensor signal test on rotor bearing vibration was continued. The test results show that not only the signal amplitude decreases, but also the high frequency part of the signal is seriously distorted. Finally, the fault characteristics of various components of piezoelectric acceleration sensor are obtained by combining the test results of the two groups.
On the Mode Localization Between Two Unidentical Resonators with Different Bending Modes for Acceleration Sensing
In the research, a novel accelerometer concept leveraging the mode-localization phenomenon is put forward. The sensor measures external acceleration through monitoring changes in the relative amplitude ratio among coupled resonators. The sensing part of the presented accelerometer comprises a doubly clamped beam coupled with a cantilever beam. Its design ensures the initial bending mode of the clamped beam approximates the secondary bending mode of the cantilever. Drawing on Euler–Bernoulli beam theory, the governing formulas of the coupled resonators are deduced and analyzed via Galerkin discretization integrated with the multiple-scale method. During working in both linear as well as nonlinear operating regions, this sensor’s dynamic behavior can be tuned by adjusting the drive voltage. The obtained results demonstrate that the nonlinear dynamics increases the accelerometer sensitivity, which can be further enhanced by adjusting the coupling voltage without severe mode overlap. The presented model offers one viable method to enhance the overall performance in multi-mode MEMS accelerometers.
Application of Negative Poisson’s Ratio Honeycomb Structure in Acceleration Measurements
The measurement of acceleration plays an essential role in evaluating the state of mechanical equipment. The acceleration transducers are the most widely used devices for measuring vibration, motion, and shock. This paper proposes a novel method of acceleration measurement based on auxetic honeycomb structure. By using this method, the change in the auxetic honeycomb structure’s transmittance caused by elastic deformation under acceleration can be converted into a change in solar cell’s output. Geometric analysis and experiments are performed to investigate the effectiveness of the proposed method. The results provide a new structural insight for acceleration sensors. In order to assess the efficacy of the proposed approach, geometric analysis and experiments are conducted. The resonance frequency of an acceleration measurement device using an auxetic structure is approximately 100Hz, while for a device using a non-auxetic structure, it is about 40Hz, both reaching the maximum wavelength variation. The results give potential paths for future study as well as new structural insights for acceleration sensors.
A Low-Frequency Fiber Bragg Grating Acceleration Sensor Based on Spring Support and Symmetric Compensation Structure with Flexible Hinges
To measure vibration signals, a low-frequency fiber Bragg grating (FBG) acceleration sensor featuring a flexible hinge with a spring support and symmetric compensation structure has been designed. Based on the mechanical model of the sensor’s structure, the expressions for sensitivity and resonant frequency of the sensor are derived. The structural parameters of the sensor are optimized, and a simulation analysis is conducted using ANSYS 19.2 software. According to the results of simulation analysis and size optimization, the sensor prototype is constructed. Subsequently, its amplitude-frequency response, sensitivity, and temperature characteristics are investigated through vibration experiments. The experimental results show that the resonant frequency of the sensor is 73 Hz, the operating frequency range is 0~60 Hz, and the sensitivity measures 24.24 pm/g. This design meets the requirements for measuring vibration signals at low frequencies.
Experimental Study of Wheel-to-Rail Interaction Using Acceleration Sensors for Continuous Rail Transport Comfort Evaluation
Rail transport comfort is ensured by predictive maintenance and continuous supervision of rail quality. Besides the specialized equipment, the authors are proposing a simple system that can be implemented on operational wagons while in service, aiming to detect irregularities in the rail and report them using the train’s online communication lines. The sensor itself is an acceleration sensor connected to an electronic microcontroller able to filter the inrush acceleration and send it to the diagnosis system of the wagon. This paper presents a study of real data recorded of the transversal and vertical vibrations of a standard tank wagon, measured on 2 axles and the car body, followed by the interpretation of the recorded data.
Processing method of acceleration signal with zero drift
An economical and effective method to measure displacement is to integrate the acceleration signal. Because of the zero drift in the acceleration sensor, there will be a trend term in the process of acceleration secondary integration, which will cause some errors in displacement measurement. In this paper, several methods of acceleration signal processing with zero drift are given, and the advantages and disadvantages of these methods as well as the applicable occasions are analysed, which have important reference value for selecting reasonable methods in dealing with engineering problems.
