\"Sixteen-year-old Lucille hopes to one day open a school alongside her best friend where girls just like them can learn what it means to be Haitian: to learn from the mountains and the forests around them, to carve, to sew, to draw, and to sing the songs of the Mapou, the sacred trees that dot the island nation. But when her friend vanishes without a trace, a dream--a gift from the Mapou--tells Lucille to go to her village's section chief, the local face of law, order, and corruption, which puts her life and her family's at risk. Forced to flee her home, Lucille takes a servant post with a wealthy Haitian woman from society's elite in Port-au-Prince. Despite a warning to avoid him, she falls in love with her employer's son. But when their relationship is found out, she must leave again--this time banished to another city to work for a visiting American writer and academic conducting fieldwork in Haiti. While Lucille's new employer studies vodou and works on the novel that will become 'Their Eyes Were Watching God,' Lucille risks losing everything she cares about--and any chance of seeing her best friend again--as she fights to save their lives and secure her future in this novel in verse with the racing heart of a thriller\"--Provided by publisher.

Adolescent pregnancy
2025
Every year, more than two million girls below the age of 15 become pregnant in low- and middle-income countries, and these pregnancies are more prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa, increasing maternal mortality and morbidity. Therefore, the objective of this narrative review of the literature was to present a detailed understanding of unintended adolescent pregnancies and explore the factors associated with these pregnancies, their consequences, and any gaps identified in the extant literature. The review included 19 articles accessed and retrieved from a variety of databases, namely: PubMed, ProQuest, Scopus, CINAHL, Western Libraries Catalogue, and Google Scholar. This review notes that adolescent pregnancies are primarily perceived to be social problems related to misconduct and delinquency, and across cultures, adolescent pregnancies are interpreted differently and given various meanings. The results of the review indicate that most unintended adolescent pregnancies are attributable to caused by a lack of sexual reproductive knowledge, and the effects of cultural factors such as limitations on open discussions between parents and children. Among the consequences of adolescent pregnancy included emotional trauma, social embarrassment, school dropout, and poverty. This narrative review highlights the need of exploring the issue of unintended adolescent pregnancies through a more comprehensive, multi-dimensional, and local perspective. By exploring the cultural, social, and political dimensions at the local context level, such approach can foster meaningful social and political changes, advocacy, and emancipation.

Mental health problems among Chinese adolescents during the COVID-19: The importance of nutrition and physical activity
2021
Mental health problems are common among adolescents and greatly influenced by stressful events. This study sought to assess the prevalence and correlates of insomnia, depressive and anxiety symptoms among Chinese adolescents during the COVID-19. Method: Cross-sectional study (N = 1,794 adolescents, mean age = 15.26) was conducted in May 2020. An online survey was used to collect socio-demographic data, COVID-related fear (COVID-fear), nutrition, physical activity (PA) level and the symptoms of insomnia, depression and anxiety. Results: The prevalence of insomnia, depressive and anxiety symptoms was 37.80%, 48.20% and 36.70%, respectively, among Chinese adolescents during the pandemic. Generalized linear models revealed that female, left behind children, and students with greater COVID-fear tended to report symptoms of insomnia, depression and anxiety concurrently. After adjusting for socio-demographic factors and COVID-fear, better nutritional status and moderately active PA were both associated with lower levels of depressive and anxiety symptoms, while highly active PA was associated with lower levels of insomnia, depressive and anxiety symptoms. Conclusions: These findings suggest that more attention should be paid to psychological health among adolescents while combating COVID-19. To promote adolescents’ mental health, educators should help adolescents develop a healthy lifestyle with balanced diet and regular exercise.

Child & adolescent mental health
2022
(1) Background: Discrepancies between children’s self-reports and their parents’ reports on mental health indicators are associated with measurement errors or informant bias. However, they are a valuable tool in understanding the course of child psychopathology. This study aims to determine the level of discrepancies between parents’ perceptions and children’s self-reports in mental health indicators in Northern Chile. (2) Methods: A System of Evaluation of Children and Adolescents self-report (Sistema de Evaluación de Niños y Adolescentes, SENA) was responded to by 408 students between 8 and 13 years old and their parents. (3) Results: Children reported a significantly higher frequency of emotional problems, defiant behavior, and executive functions as compared to their parents’ responses. (4) Conclusions: There is a disjunction between the report of parents and children, which could originate in poor family communication.
