Music as a Tool for Affiliative Bonding: A Second-Person Approach to Musical Engagement

Music listening or playing can create a feeling of connection with other listeners or performers, with distinctive levels of immersion and absorption. A major question, in this regard, is whether the music does have an ontological status, as an end in itself, or whether it is only a tool for the mediation of something else. In this paper we endorse a mediating perspective, with a focus on the music’s potential to increase affiliative bonding between listeners, performers and even the music. Music, then, is hypostasized as “something that touches us” and can be considered a partner of affiliative exchange. It has the potential to move us and to modulate the way we experience the space around us. We therefore elaborate on the tactile dimension of being moved, as well as on the distinction between personal, peripersonal, and extrapersonal space, with a corresponding distinction between first-person, second-person, and third-person perspectives on musical engagement.

Inter-group alliance dynamics in Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops aduncus)

The social intelligence hypothesis holds that complex social relationships are the major selective force underlying the evolution of large brain size and intelligence. Complex social relationships are exemplified by coalitions and alliances that are mediated by affiliative behavior, resulting in differentiated but shifting relationships. Male Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins in Shark Bay, Australia, form three alliance levels or ‘orders’, primarily among non-relatives. Strategic alliance formation has been documented within both first- and second-order alliances and between second-order alliances (‘third-order alliances’), revealing that the formation of strategic inter-group alliances is not limited to humans. Here we conducted a fine-scale study on 22 adult males over a 6-year period to determine if third-order alliance relationships are differentiated, and mediated by affiliative interactions. We found third-order alliance relationships were strongly differentiated, with key individuals playing a disproportionate role in maintaining alliances. Nonetheless, affiliative interactions occurred broadly between third-order allies, indicating males maintain bonds with third-order allies of varying strength. We also documented a shift in relationships and formation of a new third-order alliance. These findings further our understanding of dolphin alliance dynamics and provide evidence that strategic alliance formation is found in all three alliance levels, a phenomenon with no peer among non-human animals.

Effect of Human Attachment Style on Horse Behaviour and Physiology during Equine-Assisted Activities–A Pilot Study

Equine-assisted activities (EAA) for human well-being and health rely on human–horse interactions for therapeutic effect. At-risk participants with mental and emotional difficulties can show poor social skills and functioning relationships, potentially leading to unsuccessful human–horse interaction in EAA. This study addresses the effect of the attachment style (AS) of at-risk adolescents on horse physiology and behaviour during an equine-facilitated learning (EFL) program. Thirty-three adolescents participated in a 10-week EFL program with nine therapy horses (the same therapy horse per adolescent throughout the program). Adolescent AS was categorized into secure (n = 7), preoccupied (n = 11), dismissing (n = 1), or fearful (n = 12) using an Experiences in Close Relationships – Relationship Structure questionnaire. Horse heart rate (HR) and behaviour (affiliative and avoidance behaviours) in response to adolescents were recorded during grooming and riding. Over time, horses with fearful AS adolescents showed consistently more affiliative behaviours compared to those with preoccupied AS adolescents during grooming, and more constant HR and avoidance behaviours compared to those with secure AS adolescents during riding. These results suggest that a more predictable and less stressful physiological and behavioural response of therapy horses toward participants in EAA with emotional and behavioural difficulties can be mediated by a human insecure attachment style.

Sex Differences in Affiliative Behavior and Social Bonding

This chapter discusses the neurobiology of affiliative behavior and social bonding in prairie voles using the monogamous prairie vole (Microtus ochrogaster) as a model system. It focuses on the roles of the neuropeptides oxytocin (OT) and vasopressin (AVP), and the effects of stress on social bonding and parental care. However, it should be recognized that these neuropeptides do not work in a vacuum, but are simply the most well-characterized systems in a complex network of factors and circuits that regulate these complex behaviors. The chapter briefly discusses some implications of these findings for translational research on human social behavior.
