Where Is My Home? The Czech National Anthem: its Problems, Controversies, and Strengths
2021
There are many countries in which the national anthem has its permanent place not open to discussions. With the Czech national anthem Where Is My Home?, however, the case is precisely the opposite. It first appeared under this title in a theatrical farce in 1834 and soon became popular across the nation. In the second half of the nineteenth century, it went through a phase of politicisation (various textual paraphrases, performances at demonstrations as an anti-Habsburg symbol, a resulting ban on singing the piece) as well as one of criticism (in which it was pointed out that the lyrics were outdated and archaic). It was at that time that proposals for the creation of a new “national anthem” were made, while the Catholic circles considered the mediaeval sacred song Saint Wenceslas, which had had a representative function in the state from time immemorial, as a potential candidate. Late in 1918, the entire song Where Is My Home? “automatically” became the first of the two parts of the Czechoslovak national anthem, but critical voices could still be heard and alternative proposals were made. The debate was revived after the fall of Communism, and even now there are efforts to “modernise” the official music version. The present paper is an attempt to discover the causes of the controversy around the anthem Where Is My Home?. This will be done by focusing on its genesis (inspirations), analysing its content and psychological dimension, considering the critics’ reservations, competition, etc. An interpretation will also be attempted as to why Where Is My Home? has withstood all the attacks and remained the national and state anthem.

Hamilton Didn't Lead Me to Happiness; Happiness Led Me to Hamilton: Life Lessons on the Pursuit of Purpose
2019
Prior to Clark's speech, the audience joined in singing the first verses of \"Lift Every Voice and Sing,\" a hymn often considered the Black national anthem: Lift every voice and sing Till earth and heaven ring, Ring with the harmonies of Liberty; Let our rejoicing rise High as the listening skies, Let it resound loud as the rolling sea. Since I didn't bring tickets, I'll rap George Washington's introduction (Clark performed a section of \"Right Hand Man \"). For the most part, it was a thriving, cultural melting pot and community.

The Anthem is Mightier than the Sword. “La Marseillaise” Versus “Die Wacht Am Rhein”: A Cognitively-Couched Analysis of the Duel of the Anthems in M. Curtiz’s “Casablanca” (1942)
2025
Music occupies a substantial role in the process of making a film and the choice of score is by no means accidental. Given its vast potential to convey emotions, it may be analysed not only from the musicological point of view. A battle of the anthems scene (German soldiers singing “Die Wacht am Rhein” versus French refugees drowning them out with “La Marseillaise” at Rick’s café) from Michael Curtiz’s “Casablanca” (1942) serves as the empirical material in the linguistic analysis made from a multimodal-cum-cognitive perspective. In this article we adopt the six-space model of conceptual integration developed by Brandt and Brandt in 2005 in order to show that a number of various elements, such as the situational context in which the meaning is coined, take part in the process of understanding the message. Specifically, as far as the battle of the anthems scene is concerned, the following mental spaces are involved in the process of meaning construction: semiotic space, presentation space, reference space, virtual space, relevance space and meaning space.

Lift Your Voice
2022
WHEN I LEARNED that the April 16, 2022 World Voice Day theme was \"Lift Your Voice,\" my initial reaction was, \"Great- global karaoke!\" In my mind, I could hear billions of people around the world vocalizing their own personal statement, be it a song, a poem, or even a polemic. To narrow the focus on the World Voice Day theme to singers, I thought, \"How could we create even bigger vocal groups?\" There's a finite number of people who would lift their voices with \"An die Musik,\" just as there would be a limited number of people whose statement would be \"We're Not Gonna Take It.\" [...]in the United States of America, many people do not like the War of 1812-based \"Star-Spangled Banner\" as a national anthem.

Romanian National Anthems, Historical, Stylistic and Aesthetic Considerations
2018
This text represents an abridgement of an extensive research paper, recently completed, and titled
. It has not been long since I wrote about a sensitive subject: that of prejudices in considering and reconsidering history, those which could manipulate (in fact
manipulate!) consciences positively or negatively, and sometimes generate extremist ideas and attitudes (
). Following the course of history, a dilemma arose regarding the national anthem, particularly regarding its origins, the circumstances under which a particular anthem was chosen, and above all, comparisons of one anthem to another. From a general point of view, the first observation is that the anthem, especially as it is perceived nowadays in Europe, involves historical meaning, symbols of human communities and nations. As a result, I want to suggest certain improvements towards the current configuration of this musical genre. First I will summarize the history of the Romanian national anthems, beginning with the very first one, adopted during the reign of Alexandru Ioan Cuza, continuing with the monarchic period, then the anthems of communist Romania, and finally the present one,
– which is in fact the oldest of all. The main reason I chose this issue does not concern purely academic curiosity; it pursues my entirely subjective interest in the circumstances that prompted Romanians to adopt, over the last century and a half, just
hymns and not others.

Race, Dehumanization, and the NFL National Anthem Protests
2022
Dehumanizing language, or language used to describe human beings as non-human entities, is increasingly prevalent in political life. This dehumanization also occurs frequently in the world of sports. Sports and politics intersected notably in 2016, when Colin Kaepernick of the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers started protesting the national anthem to raise awareness about police violence against African-Americans. Kaepernick’s protests generated considerable vitriol towards him and other protesters, some of which was dehumanizing. In this study, I examine how dehumanizing language used against anthem protesters of different races influences political attitudes. Using experimental data, I find that, when a Black player protesting the national anthem is dehumanized, White citizens are considerably less supportive of the anthem protests and protesters. This effect does not persist when the dehumanized player is White.
