Finding the Loch Ness Monster: Left-Wing Authoritarianism in the United States
Although past research suggests authoritarianism may be a uniquely right-wing phenomenon, the present two studies tested the hypothesis that authoritarianism exists in both right-wing and left-wing contexts in essentially equal degrees. Across two studies, university (n = 475) and Mechanical Turk (n = 298) participants completed either the RWA (right-wing authoritarianism) scale or a newly developed (and parallel) LWA (left-wing authoritarianism) scale. Participants further completed measurements of ideology and three domain-specific scales: prejudice, dogmatism, and attitude strength. Findings from both studies lend support to an authoritarianism symmetry hypothesis: Significant positive correlations emerged between LWA and measurements of liberalism, prejudice, dogmatism, and attitude strength. These results largely paralleled those correlating RWA with identical conservative-focused measurements, and an overall effect-size measurement showed LWA was similarly related to those constructs (compared to RWA) in both Study 1 and Study 2. Taken together, these studies provide evidence that LWA may be a viable construct in ordinary U.S. samples.

Transitional Justice in Brazil and the Jurisprudence of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights: a difficult dialogue with the Brazilian judiciary /Justica de Transicao no Brasil e a Jurisprudencia da Corte Interamericana de Direitos Humanos: a dificuldade do dialogo com o judiciario brasileiro
The paper will address transitional justice in Brazil, considering the objectives advocated by its general theory. The main idea is to make a legal analysis of the transition process in Brazil based on the relationship between Brazilian constitutional law and the Inter-American Human Rights System. It will be suggested to reflect on the ways of the dialogue between the two systems of protection of human rights (Inter-American and constitutional) proposed by some contemporary theories. As a conclusion, some reflections on how this situation contributes to the current Brazilian political crisis, especially for a certain popularization of authoritarianism as a political solution. O artigo aborda a justica de transicao no Brasil, considerando os objetivos defendidos pela sua teoria geral. A principal proposta e fazer uma analise juridica do processo de transicao no Brasil com base na relacao entre o direito constitucional brasileiro e o Sistema Interamericano de Direitos Humanos. E sugerida uma reflexao sobre os caminhhos de dialogo entre os dois sistemas de protecao dos direitos humanos (interamericano e constitucional) propostos por algumas teorias contemporaneas. Como conclusao, algumas reflexoes sobre como essa situacao contribui para a atual crise politica brasileira, especialmente para certa popularizacao do autoritarismo como solucao politica.
