Future trends and guidance for the triple bottom line and sustainability: a data driven bibliometric analysis
This study conducts a comprehensive literature review of articles on the triple bottom line (TBL) published from January 1997 to September 2018 to provide significant insights and support to guide further discussion. There were three booms in TBL publications, occurring in 2003, 2011, and 2015, and many articles attempt to address the issue of sustainability by employing the TBL. This literature analysis includes 720, 132, and 58 articles from the Web of Science (WOS), Inspec, and Scopus databases, respectively, and reveals the gaps in existing research. To discover the barriers and points of overlap, these articles are categorized into six aspects of the TBL: economic, environmental, social, operations, technology, and engineering. Examining the top 3 journals in terms of published articles on each aspect reveals the research trends and gaps. The findings provide solid evidence confirming the argument that the TBL as currently defined is insufficient to cover the entire concept of sustainability. The social and engineering aspects still require more discussion to support the linkage of the TBL and to reinforce its theoretical basis. Additionally, to discover the gaps in the data sources, theories applied, methods adopted, and types of contributions, this article summarizes 82 highly cited articles covering each aspect. This article offers theoretical insights by identifying the top contributing countries, institutions, authors, keyword networks, and authorship networks to encourage scholars to push the current discussion further forward, and it provides practical insights to bridge the gap between theory and practice for enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of improvements.
A Bibliometric Analysis of Wearable Device Research Trends 2001–2022—A Study on the Reversal of Number of Publications and Research Trends in China and the USA
In recent years, Wearable Devices have been used in a wide variety of applications and fields, but because they span so many different disciplines, it is difficult to ascertain the intellectual structure of this entire research domain. No review encompasses the whole research domain related to Wearable Devices. In this study, we collected articles on wearable devices from 2001 to 2022 and quantitatively organized them by bibliometric analysis to clarify the intellectual structure of this research domain as a whole. The cluster analysis, co-occurrence analysis, and network centrality analysis were conducted on articles collected from the Web of Science. As a result, we identified one cluster that represents applied research and two clusters that represent basic research in this research domain. Furthermore, focusing on the top two countries contributing to this research domain, China and the USA., it was confirmed that China is extremely inclined toward basic research and the USA. toward applied research, indicating that applied and basic research are in balance. The basic intellectual structure of this cross-sectional research domain was identified. The results summarize the current state of research related to Wearable Devices and provide insight into trends.
A bibliometric review on electric vehicle (EV) energy efficiency and emission effect research
Electric vehicles have received extensive attention due to their unique energy efficiency and good emission reduction effects. While a large-scale of electric vehicles are gradually replacing traditional fuel vehicles, it is necessary to ensure the energy efficiency of electric vehicles and the effectiveness of their emission reduction effects. This study conducted a bibliometric analysis of scientific publications on energy efficiency and emission reduction effects of electric vehicles from 2003 to 2022, using a variety of bibliometric tools such as R Studio, biblioshiny and VOSviewer. The results showed the gradual elimination of traditional energy vehicles, where electric vehicles play an important role in connecting energy efficiency and emission control. The results also showed the top publication outlets, citations trackers, authors with thematic evaluation of energy efficiency and emission reduction effects of electric vehicles. The contribution of the study is manifold. The academic contribution of the present study is the bibliometric analysis which will help academicians to get a quick overview of the most popular journals, top collaborators, documents, authors, and scientific knowledge structure. Secondly, policy makers, environmentalists, researchers, and academician will definitely get a pathway how they should go for future research. Finally, this study suggests more researches trend to focus on the sales of electric vehicles, automobile exhaust emissions, sensitivity analysis of electric vehicles, energy storage analysis to improve the energy efficiency of electric vehicles, and V2G related to the energy efficiency of electric vehicle clusters.
The development and future frontiers of global ecological restoration projects in the twenty-first century: a systematic review based on scientometrics
Ecological restoration projects are becoming a mainstream of research, and their studies are widely followed by scholars worldwide, yet there is no comprehensive review of this research. Nowadays, bibliometrics has attracted much attention from the scientific community, and its methodological approach allows quantitative and qualitative analysis of research performance in journals or subject areas. This paper provides a systematic and comprehensive description of the progress and hotspots of ecological restoration projects from a bibliometric perspective, based on 1173 articles in the Web of Science Core Collection (WOSCC) database. Research on ecological restoration projects has shown a positive growth trend since the twenty-first century. China and the USA are the most active countries in terms of the number of relevant articles published, and more than half of the top 10 active institutions are from China, but there is less collaboration between different countries/institutions. Research in ecological restoration projects is summarized into three main research areas: the main ecological damage problems, the impact of human beings on ecological damage, and the main methods of ecological restoration. Finally, some challenges and outlooks conducive to the rapid and balanced development of ecological restoration projects are presented, which provide valuable references and help for future researchers.
Food safety and halal food in the supply chain: Review and bibliometric analysis
Purpose: Researchers have been actively investigating various issues concerning food safety and halal food in the supply chain. The ultimate goal is to provide guarantees for quality and conformance regarding food standards and demanding expectation from the consumers. We review a set of two-decade food safety and halal food in supply chain (SC) literature from 1990 to 2018 (month of February) in order to pinpoint the problems, models, solution approaches and more importantly, the future directions of this field. Design/methodology/approach: Our method employs the 120 published articles on food safety and halal food in SC research. Various techniques from statistics, bibliometrics, and analytics are systematically deployed to gain insights on how the literature address these two topics. Findings: The predominant contributing articles, authors, affiliations, and keywords have been reviewed, clustered, and thoroughly analyzed. Through systematic graphical and clustering analyses, four major clusters regarding food safety and two clusters in halal food in SC research have been identified as the most promising and potential future for research opportunities. Research limitations/implications: This study focuses on articles that discuss food safety and halal. Practical implications: Our findings provide valuable insights to understand the major clusters of the research endeavour along with the plausible pathways to where they would likely develop in the future. With these insights, researchers and practitioners shall be able to devise initiatives that are of high relevance and significance in the near future. Social implications: This research provides an understanding to the reader about the relationship between food safety and halal. Originality/value: This paper provides the first systematic overview of food safety and halal food for supply chain researchers to see the big picture of the field. Serving as the thread connecting research endeavour in these two research areas, our novel work highlights how the work is connected, which research clusters have been the center-of-attention during the last two decades, and consequently, which areas are still lacking an investigation. We believe that people in both academia and industry who are keen to develop a rigorous solution to ensuring food safety and food halal-ness to satisfy global market requirement will be benefitting the most from our analysis.
Global microplastics pollution: a bibliometric analysis and review on research trends and hotspots in agroecosystems
The prevalence of microplastics (MPs) in agricultural ecosystems poses a notable threat to dynamics of soil ecosystems, crop productivity, and global food security. MPs enter agricultural ecosystems from various sources and have considerable impacts on the physiochemical properties soil, soil organisms and microbial communities, and plants. However, the intensity of these impacts can vary with the size, shape, types, and the concentrations of MPs in the soil. Besides, MPs can enter food chain through consummation of crops grown on MPs polluted soils. In this study, we conducted a bibliometric analysis of 1636 publications on the effects of MPs on agricultural ecosystems from 2012 to May 2024. The results revealed a substantial increase in publications over the years, and China, the USA, Germany, and India have emerged as leading countries in this field of research. Social network analysis identified emerging trends and research hotspots. The latest burst keywords were contaminants, biochar, polyethylene microplastics, biodegradable microplastics, antibiotic resistance genes, and quantification. Furthermore, we have summarized the effects of MPs on various components of agricultural ecosystems. By integrating findings from diverse disciplinary perspectives, this study provides a valuable insight into the current knowledge landscape, identifies research gaps, and proposes future research directions to effectively tackle the intricate challenges associated with MPs pollution in agricultural environments. Patterns in Worldwide Literature About Green Public Procurement: Bibliometric Analysis and Knowledge Mapping
This paper proposes a bibliometric analysis of specialized literature related to green public procurement (GPP) and aims to identify thematic developments, significant contributions, and the main research directions in this field. GPP is a process whereby public authorities seek to procure goods, services, and works with a reduced environmental impact throughout their life cycle. The bibliometric analysis is conducted using 842 publications indexed in the Web of Science databases, applying rigorous selection criteria and utilizing specialized tools such as CiteSpace and Bibliometrix. The study involves the work of 5016 authors (Appolloni A. – the most productive author), affiliated with 200 research institutions (Tor Vergata University – the most productive university) from 121 countries (China – the largest number of publications). The results indicate the most collaborative authors in GPP (Appolloni A., Testa F.), the most co-cited papers (Brammer S. 2011, Walker H. 2009), but also the most used topics (green public procurement, sustainable procurement), respectively the most current topics of interest (green innovation, supply chain management). Although research in the field of GPP is in a consolidation phase, scientific interest is growing, and the integration of green aspects into public procurement policies is becoming increasingly frequent at the international level.
The Evolution of Project-Based Organizations: A Bibliometric Analysis and Literature Review
This study explores the evolution of research within project-based organizations, uncovering new trends and identifying promising directions for future inquiries. Employing a comprehensive six-step methodology that combines bibliometric and content analyses, this research assessed term frequency, conceptual interconnections, influential contributors, geographic clusters, and dominant themes shaping the field. The dual-tool strategy using VosViewer and SciMAT enhanced the reliability and depth of our bibliometric analysis, allowing for a nuanced understanding of the interlinks between concepts and the chronological progression of terms. Data from 1,066 papers published between 2000 and 2022, extracted from the Scopus database, were analyzed to visualize six clusters based on 180 frequently used keywords. This analysis not only highlighted the multidisciplinary nature of project-based organization studies, focusing on “project management,” “knowledge management,” and “project-based learning,” but also revealed 28 key terms associated with the project-based organization cluster, emphasizing robust connections to knowledge transfer and management. Additionally, Google Trends analysis showed a growing interest in the topic among non-scholars, mirroring the academic attention it receives. Content analysis of seminal papers, selected based on citations, aligned with the term chronology from the broader sample, pinpointing several vital research directions. This research stands out for its innovative approach, combining dual-tool bibliometric analysis with content analysis to address a significant gap in the literature. It offers reliable and robust results, bridging the disconnect between quantitative data synthesis and qualitative insights to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the field.
The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Accounting Education
This study conducts a bibliometric and content analysis of relevant articles indexed in the Web of Science database, with the objective of examining the effects of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on accounting education (AE), alongside the challenges and opportunities associated with its integration into educational and research activities. The findings indicate, on the one hand, a growing scholarly interest in recent years in exploring the impact of AI on AE, and, on the other hand, a wide range of challenges and opportunities arising from the adoption of AI-based tools in this field. By offering a comprehensive and up-to-date synthesis of both the positive and negative effects observed during the years of AI application in AE, this study may serve as a foundation for developing strategies within higher education institutions (HEIs) – particularly in faculties responsible for training future accounting professionals – to promote the ethical and effective use of AI.
Transition towards Sustainable Carwash Wastewater Management: Trends and Enabling Technologies at Global Scale
Carwash wastewater (CWW) contains grease, oil, hydrocarbon residues, heavy metals, and surfactants, posing severe impacts to the environment and human health. Accordingly, various physical, chemical, and biological processes for CWW treatment have been demonstrated in recent research. In this study, a bibliometric approach was performed to comprehensively illustrate the recent progress, current direction, and future perspectives of CWW-related research. A keyword co-occurrence network was used to represent the results of the bibliometric analysis and to show the major pollutants in CWW effluents and the common systems for treating CWW via coagulation/flocculation, electrochemical, oxidation, membrane, adsorption, biological, and hybrid methods. An integrated anaerobic digestion/oxidation process has been reported to degrade CWW-associated pollutants and help develop an energy-efficient approach for waste management. The results demonstrated that the treatment of CWW has several benefits relevant to sustainable development, viz., good health and well-being, protection of life below water, bioenergy generation, and community awareness and acceptance towards wastewater reuse. Hence, these benefits could assist in meeting the environmental, economic, and social sustainable development goals (SDGs). These study outputs can encourage policymakers and stakeholders in implementing sensible regulations that control water usage and treatment in car sharing and personal vehicle services to either directly or indirectly adopt the agenda 2030 with its seventeen SDGs.
