Cross-country skills-technology policy debates through large language models
Using language models, this paper conducts a cross-country comparative innovation policy analysis of skills-technology policy debates across seven OECD member countries (Austria, Canada, Finland, Germany, Korea, Sweden, and the United Kingdom). Results highlight the dominance of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and digital skills in these policy debates, the relative neglect of green skills, and the emphasis on soft skills across all technology fields. The analysis also identifies common policy instruments, which include collaborative platforms and direct financial support. Overall, the paper shows how large language models can help policy analysts identify patterns and gaps in extensive policy texts that nonetheless critically demands expert oversight and careful interpretation.
Impact of process quality in early childhood education and care on academic outcomes: Longitudinal meta-analysis
This meta-analysis studies the association of pedagogical processes in early childhood care and education with outcomes in two academic domains: language and literacy as well as mathematics. It synthesizes evidence from 17 longitudinal studies in nine European countries with 16,461 children in regular center-based care spanning the period between ages 3 and 16. Results of a three-level meta-analysis provided small overall effect sizes for both global and domain-specific process quality, and indicated lasting associations with academic development over children's school career (ES = .11, Cohen's d = .22, and ES = .10, Cohen's d = .20). Effects varied by outcome domain, type of process measure, and differences in adopted analyses, with important implications for pedagogical practice and future research. (ZPID).
Tastemaker : Elizabeth Gordon, House beautiful, and the postwar American home
A riveting and superbly illustrated account of the enigmatic 'House Beautiful' editor's profound influence on mid-century American taste. From 1941 to 1964, 'House beautiful' magazine's crusading editor-in-chief Elizabeth Gordon introduced and promoted her vision of \"good design\" and \"better living\" to an extensive middle-class American readership. Her innovative magazine-sponsored initiatives, including House Beautiful's Pace Setter House Program and the Climate Control Project, popularized a \"livable\" and decidedly American version of postwar modern architecture. This important book champions an often-neglected source--the consumer magazine--as a key tool for deepening our understanding of mid-century architecture and design.
A cluster-based technique for solving the GAVE
Generalized absolute value equation (abbreviated as GAVE) has wide applications in scientific computing and engineering. In this paper, we propose a cluster-based technique for solving the GAVE. First, the GAVE is shown to be equivalent to a linear equation which is related to the signs of the solution. In order to avoid the disadvantage of the existence of the sign index sets which is problem depended, by the framework of a fixed-point iteration, the analysis of the signs of the iteration vectors is given. Some necessary conditions of the nonzero and zero entries of the iteration vector are presented. Then, the signs of the solution of the GAVE can be partitioned by a clustering process. Numerical examples show that the proposed technique can work and significantly accelerate the computational efficiency comparing to some existing methods.
Sul concetto di Dasein
The article examines the concept of Dasein in its relationship with the category of Bildung. From the philosophical-pedagogical investigation emerges that there is a possibility to think about a Daseinsbildung (i.e., a Dasein of Bildung: the existent being of self-formation) and a Bildungsdasein (i.e., a Bildung of Dasein: the self-formation of existent being in humans). The link between Dasein and Bildung consists in a culture of education and instruction. These don't have an end in themselves but rather in the Bildung of the human being, closely connected with its Dasein. Keywords. Dasein--Bildung--Daseinsbildung--Bildungsdasein
Agency in Educational Technology: Interdisciplinary Perspectives and Implications for Learning Design
Advancing learners’ agency is a key educational goal. The advent of personalized EdTech, which automatically tailor learning environments to individual learners, gives renewed relevance to the topic. EdTech researchers and practitioners are confronted with the same basic question: What is the right amount of agency to give to learners during their interactions with EdTech? This question is even more relevant for younger learners. Our aim in this paper is twofold: First, we outline and synthesize the ways in which agency is conceptualized in three key learning disciplines (philosophy, education, and psychology). We show that there are different types and levels of agency and various prerequisites for the effective exercise of agency and that these undergo developmental change. Second, we provide guiding principles for how agency can be designed for in EdTech for children. We propose an agency personalization loop in which the level of agency provided by the EdTech is assigned in an adaptive manner to strike a balance between allowing children to freely choose learning content and assigning optimal content to them. Finally, we highlight some examples from practice.
