Long-term declines of European insectivorous bird populations and potential causes
Evidence of declines in insect populations has recently received considerable scientific and societal attention. However, the lack of long-term insect monitoring makes it difficult to assess whether declines are geographically widespread. By contrast, bird populations are well monitored and often used as indicators of environmental change. We compared the population trends of European insectivorous birds with those of other birds to assess whether patterns in bird population trends were consistent with declines of insects. We further examined whether declines were evident for insectivores with different habitats, foraging strata, and other ecological preferences. Bird population trends were estimated for Europe (1990–2015) and Denmark (1990–2016). On average, insectivores declined over the study period (13% across Europe and 28% in Denmark), whereas omnivores had stable populations. Seedeaters also declined (28% across Europe; 34% in Denmark), but this assessment was based on fewer species than for other groups. The effects of insectivory were stronger for farmland species (especially grassland species), for ground feeders, and for cold-adapted species. Insectivory was associated with long-distance migration, which was also linked to population declines. However, many insectivores had stable populations, especially habitat generalists. Our findings suggest that the decline of insectivores is primarily associated with agricultural intensification and loss of grassland habitat. The loss of both seed and insect specialists indicates an overall trend toward bird communities dominated by diet generalists. La evidencia de las declinaciones poblacionales de insectos ha recibido recientemente una atención considerable por parte de la comunidad científica y la sociedad. Sin embargo, la falta de un monitoreo prolongado de los insectos complica valorar si estas declinaciones tienen una distribución extensa geográficamente. Como contraste, las poblaciones de aves tienen un monitoreo constante y con frecuencia se usan como indicadores del cambio climático. Comparamos las tendencias poblacionales de las aves insectívoras de Europa con las de otras aves para valorar si los patrones en las tendencias poblacionales de aves son consistentes con las declinaciones de insectos. Además examinamos si las declinaciones eran evidentes para aves insectívoras con diferentes hábitats, estratos de alimentación, y otras preferencias ecológicas. Las tendencias poblacionales de las aves se estimaron para Europa (1990–2015) y para Dinamarca (1990–2016). En promedio, las aves insectívoras declinaron a lo largo del periodo de estudio (13% en Europa y 28% en Dinamarca) mientras que las aves omnívoras tuvieron poblaciones estables. Las poblaciones de aves que se alimentan de semillas también declinaron (28% en Europa; 34% en Dinamarca), pero esta valoración se basó en menos especies que para los otros grupos. Los efectos de la insectivoría fueron más evidentes para las especies de tierras agrícolas (especialmente las especies de pastizales), para las especies que se alimentan sobre el suelo y para las especies adaptadas al frío. La insectivoría estuvo asociada con la migración de larga distancia, la cual también estuvo ligada a las declinaciones poblacionales. Sin embargo, muchas aves insectívoras tuvieron poblaciones estables, especialmente aquellas generalistas de hábitat. Nuestros hallazgos sugieren que la declinación de las aves insectívoras está asociada principalmente con la intensificación agrícola y la pérdida de pastizales. La pérdida de aves cuya alimentación es especialista en insectos o en semillas indica una tendencia general hacia comunidades de aves dominadas por aquellas con dietas generalistas.
Spatial distribution of black fly (Diptera: Simuliidae) immature taxocenoses from the Pedra Branca State Park, Brazil
To understand the relationship between environmental factors and black fly (Simuliidae) species’ distributions, we sampled immature individuals in Pedra Branca State Park, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, during the dry season in June 2018. We then correlated environmental variable values with black fly larvae abundances via redundancy analyses. The abundances of Simulium pertinax Kollar 1832, Simulium subpallidum Lutz 1910, Simulium (Thyrsopelma) spp., Simulium (Psaroniocompsa) spp., and Simulium (Inaequalium) spp. were negatively correlated with light and temperature, while Simulium (Hemicne tha) spp.’s abundance correlated positively with these variables. The abundances of Simulium pertinax Kollar 1832, Simulium (Hemicnetha) spp., and Simulium (Thyrsopelma) spp. were positively associated with altitude, while the abundances of the other species revealed negative correlations with this factor. Species richness was determined using pupae in a linear regression with the Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera Trichoptera (EPT) index. This analysis showed that the most deteriorated sites have a higher species richness than more conserved sites within Pedra Branca State Park. Our results suggest that simuliid species richness reflects habitat integrity, thus becoming a reliable indicator of habitat conservatio status.
Dry Forest Fragmentation in Brazilian Cerrado and Its Effects on Communities of Ground Foraging Ants
Ants can represent a useful model for studies on the impact of forest fragmentation because these organisms are found abundantly in soil and plants sensitive to changes in environmental conditions. Our study characterized the structure of ground foraging ant communities present in 10 fragmented areas of dry forest surrounding areas under soybean and maize cultivation. Using baited pitfall traps, our study identified 60 ant morphospecies, distributed in 21 genera. Species richness of ground foraging ants was not influenced by size of dry forest fragment. Fragment edge traps captured fewer species when compared with traps located in the center of the fragment. Species richness and species composition differed significantly between dry forest fragments and both cultivated crops as well as inter-crop periods. Dry forest fragments had the greatest ant species richness. Integrated knowledge of the mechanisms through which fragmentation effects alter ant communities can be useful for the development of strategies to mitigate harmful effects on those species affected, and to improve methods that can be used to evaluate the conservation value of the remaining natural environment.
Spatial distribution analysis of Dicksonia sellowiana Hook. in Araucaria forest fragments with different sizes
Abstract Dicksonia sellowiana Hook. (Dicksoniaceae) is target of extractive exploitation and is threatened with extinction. We analyzed the population structure, the spatial distribution pattern of D. sellowiana and its relationship with environmental parameters within three fragments of Araucaria Forest in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The fragments are of different sizes, namely, large (H1LF) with 246 ha, medium (H2MF) with 57 ha and small (H3SF) with 5.2 ha. Within each site, 1 ha was delimited, divided into 100 subplots (100 m2), of which 20 were selected with a draw. In each subplot, counting of the individuals, the registration of the caudice height and the coverage of leaves (SC) (m2), measurements of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), canopy opening degree (CO), soil moisture (SM) and litter thickness (LT). The temperature (T) was measured inside each site. A total of 792 plants were sampled, of which 551 were concentrated in H1LF, 108 in H2MF and 133 in H3SF. An average of 1320 ha-1 individuals were estimated. Of the total including the three fragments, 96.9% of the individuals are in the first class of height (up to 0.8 m), indicating a great potential of population development. The spatial distribution pattern (AI) was aggregated in the three populations and the plants presented a heterogeneous total coverage, between 4.73 m2 (H2MF) and 2,223.47 m2 (H1LF). The highest values of SC and SM were more related to the distribution of individuals in H1LF whereas the opposite was recorded in H2MF. The highest values of PAR, LT and CO correlated with the distribution of D. sellowiana in H3SF. In addition to revealing that the H1LF population is among the most dense in southern Brazil, the results demonstrated a significant structural distinction between the interior populations of the fragments, in spite of them being located near to one another and being part of the same natural field matrix. Resumo Dicksonia sellowiana Hook. (Dicksoniaceae) é alvo de exploração extrativista e encontra-se ameaçada de extinção. Analisamos a estrutura populacional, o padrão de distribuição espacial de D. sellowiana e sua relação com parâmetros ambientais no interior de três fragmentos de Floresta com Araucária, no Rio Grande do Sul (RS), Brasil. Os fragmentos possuem diferentes tamanhos sendo denominados de grande (H1LF) com 246 ha, médio (H2MF) com 57 ha e de pequeno (H3SF) com 5,2 ha. No interior de cada sítio, foi demarcado 1 ha, fracionado em 100 subparcelas (100m2), das quais 20 foram sorteadas. Em cada subparcela foi feita a contagem dos indivíduos, o registro da altura do cáudice e da cobertura (SC) (m2) das folhas, as medições da radiação fotossinteticamente ativa (PAR), grau de abertura do dossel (CO), umidade do solo (SM) e espessura da serapilheira (LT). A temperatura (T) foi medida no interior de cada sítio. Foram amostradas 792 plantas, das quais 551 concentradas no H1LF, 108 no H2MF e 133 no H3SF e em média foram estimados 1320 indivíduos ha-1. Do total dos três fragmentos, 96,9% dos indivíduos estão na primeira classe de altura (até 0,8 m), indicando grande potencial de desenvolvimento das populações. O padrão de distribuição espacial (AI) foi agregado nas três populações e as plantas apresentaram uma cobertura total heterogênea, entre 4,73m2 (H2MF) e 2.223,47m 2 (H1LF). Os maiores valores de SC e de SM foram mais relacionadas com a distribuição dos indivíduos no H1LF enquanto que o contrário foi registrado no H2MF. Os maiores valores de PAR, LT e de CO relacionaram-se com a distribuição de D. sellowiana no H3SF. Além de revelar que a população do H1LF está entre as mais densas já descritas no sul do Brasil, os resultados demonstraram uma significativa distinção estrutural entre as populações dos interiores dos fragmentos com diferentes tamanhos, embora muito próximos geograficamente e inseridos em uma mesma matriz de campo natural.
Abundance and diversity of black flies (Diptera: Simuliidae) in rivers of the Andean Eastern Hills of Bogotá (Colombia), and its relationship with water stream physicochemical variables
Abstract Black flies are abundant benthic organisms in well-oxygenated running water and are considered effective bioindicators of water quality. Information on the ecology of these organisms at the species level is important, since up to now information has mainly been available on a family level. The aim of this study was to evaluate the composition of black flies and their relationships to a group of physical and chemical factors in four small rivers of the Eastern Hills around Bogotá, Colombia. These headwaters are protected by the Empresa de Acueducto y Alcantarillado de Bogotá. Black fly larvae and pupae were collected during four sampling periods during the dry season to the early rainy season of 2012. Multivariate methods were used to determine the presence of each species in relation to dissolved oxygen, nitrates, pH, temperature, and water velocity. PCA ordination revealed a physicochemical environment with a tendency towards a certain homogeneity in the four rivers studied. The DCA ordination confirmed that in La Vieja River the G. ortizi complex dominated while S. muiscorum was dominant in the other three rivers. Similarly, according to the NMDS, the composition of black flies in Arzobispo and Chorro de Padilla rivers was similar, while that of El Delirio and La Vieja rivers were different, especially in this last river. The rivers had low species richness (four species and one species complex). Simulium muiscorum was negatively correlated with dissolved oxygen, temperature and current velocity while S. ignescens was associated with slightly more oxygenated waters and S. furcilatum with faster currents. The low species diversity and richness for the four rivers is consistent with previous reports of low Neotropical diversity of black flies. Results showed that simuliid species could possibly be good indicators of the environmental conditions of Eastern Hills rivers around Bogotá.
Comunidad fitoplanctónica en una playa de la costa central de Venezuela y su relación con variables ambientales en un ciclo anual
El fitoplancton es un indicador excelente de la calidad del agua y de la condición del ambiente. Con la finalidad de identificar las especies de microalgas indicadoras de las condiciones hidrográficas de la zona marina y costera de una playa ubicada en la zona central de Venezuela y la variabilidad espacial y temporal de su estructura comunitaria, se realizaron 13 muestreos mensuales durante el período entre abril de 2010 – abril de 2011. Se recolectaron muestras de fitoplancton y se estimaron variables fisicoquímicas de interés para la calidad del agua. La comunidad fitoplanctónica estuvo representada por 168 especies o morfotipos distribuidos en 94 diatomeas, 55 dinoflagelados, ocho clorofitas, cinco euglenofitas y un flagelado, y se evidenciaron cambios temporales en su estructura comunitaria, relacionados con el aporte de aguas continentales durante las épocas de máximas precipitaciones y un ascenso de aguas profundas durante los primeros meses del año. Se evidencia una diversidad biológica alta de esta comunidad con una variedad de especies que incluye microalgas bentónicas, planctónicas, costeras, estuarinas y oceánicas. Adicionalmente, se identificaron las especies Trichodesmium thiebautii, Pseudonitzschia seriata, Asterionellopsis glacialis, Chaetoceros socialis, Thalassiosira nordeskioldii y Tripos massiliensis como bioindicadoras de las condiciones de la zona, debido a su relación con variables físicoquímicas específicas y a su capacidad de diferenciar la comunidad espacial y temporalmente.
Louisiana Waterthrush (Parkesia motacilla) survival and site fidelity in an area undergoing shale gas development
We quantified Louisiana Waterthrush (Parkesia motacilla) site fidelity and apparent survival across a 6 year period in an area undergoing shale gas development.Waterthrush initially exhibited high site fidelity that declined over time. At the same time, the number of unpaired males defending territories increased as did natal fidelity. We identified site fidelity factors that influenced if adult males and females returned. More males returned either due to or regardless of amount of shale gas disturbance and lower riparian habitat quality. Females were less likely to return with increased number of breeding attempts. Females in shale gas disturbed areas had a higher number of breeding attempts and lower individual productivity. We saw a general nonsignificant trend in declining apparent survival over time. Overall apparent survival estimates for adult males (0.56) and females (0.44) were similar to those reported for other populations. Apparent survival candidate models suggested weak, positive relationships of increased survival with shale gas territory disturbance, disturbance with year, and year for adult males, and a positive relationship of increased survival with hydraulic fracturing runoff for adult females although regression coefficients overlapped zero for all model-supported covariates implying no statistical significance. Since waterthrush can maintain pair bonds from the previous year and females must pick a nest site within the defended male's territory, there are potential conflicts between factors that influence adult survival and site fidelity that may affect long-term population persistence. Our study adds to previous evidence that shale gas disturbed areas may serve as sink habitats.
Macroinvertebrates associated with Guzmania mitis L.B. Sm. (Bromeliaceae) in two fragments of oak grove
The composition and abundance of macroinvertebrates associated with the terrestrial bromeliad Guzmania mitis in two fragments of oak grove with different conservation status in Arcabuco, Boyacá were studied. The study aimed to establish whether there are differences in the composition and abundance of macroinvertebrates between fragments and their possible causes, and to identify groups of macroinvertebrates that may serve as indicators of alterations to oak groves. Two macroinvertebrates samples were made, one in the dry season in February and one in the rainy season in May 2006, in two physiognomically and structurally different oak grove fragments. Nine bromeliads per fragment were collected from which the macroinvertebrates were identified. 12 258 individuals were found, belonging to 20 orders, 52 families and 89 morphospecies, with orders Diptera and Coleoptera prominent in larval stages. The cluster analysis in the disturbed fragment had a higher abundance of Chironomidae and low abundance of Scirtidae, whereas the conserved fragment had low abundance of Chironomidae and high numbers of Scirtidae. No significant relationship was found between abundance, diversity (Shannon) and richness (Margalef) and variation in physicochemical parameters (dissolved O2 and pH) measured in bromeliads. The families Chironomidae and Scirtidae are proposed as good candidates for possible indicators of the degree of intervention in oak groves.
Evaluation of water and sediment quality of urban streams in Santa Cruz do Sul County, RS, Brasil, using ecotoxicological assays
AIM: This study aimed to assess the quality of water and sediment of urban streams (Lajeado, Preto, Pedras and Lewis-Pedroso) located in Santa Cruz do Sul County, RS, Brazil, using the microcrustacean Ceriodaphnia dubia as test-organism. METHODS: Quarterly scientific excursions to the streams were held on August and November 2011, February and May of 2012 in order to collect water and sediment samples, in the upper reaches (P1, P3, P5, P7) and lower reaches (P2, P4, P6, P8), totalizing 8 points. To evaluate the toxicity (acute and chronic), the microcrustacean C. dubia was used. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: The results indicated high toxicity levels detected in samples P2, P6 and P8 (lower reaches), as they caused the mortality of 100% of organisms in the water samples (P6 and P8) and sediment samples (P2 and P8), denoting acute effect. Yet, all upstream sites showed chronic effects in sediment samples, at least for one collection period, with the highest significant toxicity level among all samples (55.2%), which indicates the presence of contamination even in upper areas. These results indicated a strong degradation of the water and sediment quality of urban streams coming from the wastewater and industrial discharges of the urban area, which can cause damage to the biota as well as the public health, due to the multiples uses of water that the local population does, highlighting many of them as inappropriate to the water quality detected, such as the primary contact recreation (balneability). OBJETIVO: O presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a qualidade da água e do sedimento de córregos urbanos (Lajeado, Preto, Pedras e Lewis-Pedroso) localizados no município de Santa Cruz do Sul, RS, Brasil, utilizando o microcrustáceo Ceriodaphnia dubia como organismo-teste. MÉTODOS: Excursões científicas trimestrais foram realizadas nesses arroios, em agosto e novembro de 2011; fevereiro e maio de 2012, para coletar amostras de água e sedimento nos trechos superiores (P2, P4, P6 e P8) e nos trechos inferiores (P1, P3, P5 e P7), totalizando 8 pontos. Para avaliar a toxicidade (aguda e crônica), utilizou-se o microcrustáceo C. dubia. RESULTADOS E CONCLUSÃO: Os resultados indicaram alta toxicidade nos pontos P2, P6 e P8 (trechos inferiores), uma vez que causaram 100% de mortalidade dos organismos nas amostras de água (P6 e P8) e amostras de sedimento (P2 e P8), denotando efeito agudo. Ainda, todos os trechos superiores mostraram efeito crônico em amostras de sedimento, em pelo menos uma época de amostragem, com os maiores níveis de toxicidade significativa entre todas as amostras (55.2%), o que indica a presença de contaminação mesmos em trechos superiores. Estes resultados indicaram uma forte degradação da qualidade da água e do sedimento dos arroios urbanos proveniente das descargas de águas residuais e industriais da área urbana, que podem causar danos à biota, bem como a saúde pública, devido aos múltiplos usos de água que a população local faz, destacando muitos deles como inadequados para a qualidade da água detectada, como a recreação de contato primário (balneabilididade).
Tolerance of benthic macroinvertebrates to organic enrichment in highland streams of northeastern Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil
AIM: the aim of this study was to determine the ecological valence of benthic macroinvertebrates at different pollution levels in highland rivers and streams of Rio Grande do Sul; METHODS: the dataset proceeds from samplings performed between 2002-2011 in 35 lotic ecosystems. The Chemical Index was used to determine pollution levels. Indices of richness and Shannon diversity were applied to characterize the structure of benthic communities. The descriptors used to determine taxa's ecological valence were selected according to Coefficient of Variation and regression analyses. Groups of tolerance were identified using Interquartile range and cluster analysis; RESULTS: Conductivity and Chemical Index were the descriptors best related with diversity of benthic macroinvertebrate community. These metrics were used to determine the tolerance range of 38 taxa. Interquartile range and cluster analysis revealed three groups of taxa, according to their occurrence in different levels of pollution: taxa with narrow amplitudes, present at sites with very low or very high load of organic enrichment; taxa with moderate amplitude, found until moderately polluted sites; and taxa with occurrence in widespread environmental conditions. The results, when compared to other studies in Brazil, showed differences in some taxa's tolerance. This observation indicates the need to assess the bioindication potential of these taxa in genus and species level; CONCLUSION: the present study contributes to increase knowledge about the bioindicator potential of benthic macroinvertebrates. Therefore, the study supports an advanced biomonitoring of ecological quality in mountain streams of southern Brazil. OBJETIVO: o objetivo do estudo foi determinar a valência ecológica de macroinvertebrados bentônicos em diferentes níveis de poluição em rios e arroios na região nordeste do Rio Grande do Sul. MÉTODOS: o conjunto de dados provém de coletas realizadas entre 2002-2011, em 35 ecossistemas lóticos. O Índice Químico foi utilizado para verificar os níveis de poluição. Os índices de riqueza e diversidade de Shannon foram utilizados para caracterizar a estrutura das comunidades bentônicas. Os descritores utilizados para determinar a valência ecológica dos taxa foram selecionados de acordo com os resultados de análises do Coeficiente de Variação e de regressão. Grupos de tolerância foram identificados por meio de análises da amplitude interquartil e de agrupamento. RESULTADOS: A condutividade e o Índice Químico foram os descritores que mostraram a maior relação com as comunidades de macroinvertebrados bentônicos. Estas métricas foram utilizadas para determinar a amplitude de tolerância de 38 taxa. As análises da amplitude interquartil e de agrupamento evidenciaram três grupos de taxa, conforme sua ocorrência em diferentes níveis de poluição: taxa com amplitudes estreitas, presentes em locais com enriquecimento orgânico muito alto ou muito baixo; taxa com amplitudes moderadas, encontrados até locais com poluição moderada; e taxa de ampla ocorrência em diferentes condições ambientais. CONCLUSÃO: o presente estudo contribui para aumentar o conhecimento sobre o potencial bioindicador de macroinvertebrados bentônicos, fornecendo bases para um biomonitoramento avançado da qualidade ecológica em águas correntes do sul do Brasil.
