High-performance thermoelectric nanocomposites from nanocrystal building blocks

The efficient conversion between thermal and electrical energy by means of durable, silent and scalable solid-state thermoelectric devices has been a long standing goal. While nanocrystalline materials have already led to substantially higher thermoelectric efficiencies, further improvements are expected to arise from precise chemical engineering of nanoscale building blocks and interfaces. Here we present a simple and versatile bottom–up strategy based on the assembly of colloidal nanocrystals to produce consolidated yet nanostructured thermoelectric materials. In the case study on the PbS–Ag system, Ag nanodomains not only contribute to block phonon propagation, but also provide electrons to the PbS host semiconductor and reduce the PbS intergrain energy barriers for charge transport. Thus, PbS–Ag nanocomposites exhibit reduced thermal conductivities and higher charge carrier concentrations and mobilities than PbS nanomaterial. Such improvements of the material transport properties provide thermoelectric figures of merit up to 1.7 at 850 K.
Nanomaterials provide a route to efficient solid-state conversion between thermal and electrical energy. Here, the authors demonstrate that a combination of metal and semiconductor colloidal nanocrystals can produce thermoelectric nanocomposites with high performance.

Enterococcus faecalis is a Gram-positive, opportunistic, pathogenic bacterium that causes a significant number of antibiotic-resistant infections in hospitalized patients. The development of antibiotic resistance in hospital-associated pathogens is a formidable public health threat. In E. faecalis and other Gram-positive pathogens, correlations exist between lipid composition and antibiotic resistance. Resistance to the last-resort antibiotic daptomycin is accompanied by a decrease in phosphatidylglycerol (PG) levels, whereas multiple peptide resistance factor (MprF) converts anionic PG into cationic lysyl-PG via a trans-esterification reaction, providing resistance to cationic antimicrobial peptides. Unlike previous studies that relied on thin layer chromatography and spectrophotometry, we have performed liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) directly on lipids extracted from E. faecalis, and quantified the phospholipids through multiple reaction monitoring (MRM). In the daptomycin-sensitive E. faecalis strain OG1RF, we have identified 17 PGs, 8 lysyl-PGs (LPGs), 23 cardiolipins (CL), 3 glycerophospho-diglucosyl-diacylglycerols (GPDGDAG), 5 diglucosyl-diacylglycerols (DGDAG), 3 diacylglycerols (DAGs), and 4 triacylglycerols (TAGs). We have quantified PG and shown that PG levels vary during growth of E. faecalis in vitro. We also show that two daptomycin-resistant (DapR) strains of E. faecalis have substantially lower levels of PG and LPG levels. Since LPG levels in these strains are lower, daptomycin resistance is likely due to the reduction in PG. This lipidome map is the first comprehensive analysis of membrane phospholipids and glycolipids in the important human pathogen E. faecalis, for which antimicrobial resistance and altered lipid homeostasis have been intimately linked.

Biaxial stretch can overcome discrepancy between global and local orientations of wavy collagen fibres

Most frequently used structure-based constitutive models of arterial wall apply assumptions on two symmetric helical (and dispersed) fibre families which, however, are not well supported with histological findings where two collagen fibre families are seldom found. Moreover, bimodal distributions of fibre directions may originate also from their waviness combined with ignoring differences between local and global fibre orientations. In contrast, if the model parameters are identified without histological information on collagen fibre directions, the resulting mean angles of both fibre families are close to ±45°, which contradicts nearly all histologic findings. The presented study exploited automated polarized light microscopy for detection of collagen fibre directions in porcine aorta under different biaxial extensions and approximated the resulting histograms with unimodal and bimodal von Mises distributions. Their comparison showed dominantly circumferential orientation of collagen fibres. Their concentration parameter for unimodal distributions increased with circumferential load, no matter if acting uniaxially or equibiaxially. For bimodal distributions, the angle between both dominant fibre directions (chosen as measure of fibre alignment) decreased similarly for both uniaxial and equibiaxial loads. These results indicate the existence of a single family of wavy circumferential collagen fibres in all layers of the aortic wall. Bimodal distributions of fibre directions presented sometimes in literature may come rather from waviness of circumferentially arranged fibres than from two symmetric families of helical fibres. To obtain a final evidence, the fibre orientation should be analysed together with their waviness.

Detection of Tetrodotoxin Shellfish Poisoning (TSP) Toxins and Causative Factors in Bivalve Molluscs from the UK

Tetrodotoxins (TTXs) are traditionally associated with the occurrence of tropical Pufferfish Poisoning. In recent years, however, TTXs have been identified in European bivalve mollusc shellfish, resulting in the need to assess prevalence and risk to shellfish consumers. Following the previous identification of TTXs in shellfish from southern England, this study was designed to assess the wider prevalence of TTXs in shellfish from around the coast of the UK. Samples were collected between 2014 and 2016 and subjected to analysis using HILIC-MS/MS. Results showed the continued presence of toxins in shellfish harvested along the coast of southern England, with the maximum concentration of total TTXs reaching 253 µg/kg. TTX accumulation was detected in Pacific oysters (Crassostrea gigas), native oysters (Ostrea edulis) common mussels (Mytilus edulis) and hard clams (Mercenaria mercenaria), but not found in cockles (Cerastoderma edule), razors (Ensis species) or scallops (Pecten maximus). Whilst the highest concentrations were quantified in samples harvested during the warmer summer months, TTXs were still evident during the winter. An assessment of the potential causative factors did not reveal any links with the phytoplankton species Prorocentrum cordatum, instead highlighting a greater level of risk in areas of shallow, estuarine waters with temperatures above 15 °C.

Simulation of ozone concentrations inside 60CO industrial irradiator

The motivation of this work is to study the relationship between gamma radiation and also ozone concentration in 60CO industrial irradiators. Because ozone is considered to be one of the most important safety issues, because it has a destructive effect on the human body and has a corrosive effect on metal parts in the irradiated area. Moreover, due to its high reactivity. So first using ozone monogram method to measure ozone concentration, and also the effect of the factor on ozone concentration was determined. MATLAB computer code was used to calculate the ozone concentration-response with completely different statistics. Among them, ozone concentration in the 60CO irradiation area is in a completely different state. These conditions include: different gamma emitters, completely different irradiators, airflow correction, and engine failure. It is suggested that ozone formation may be a direct effect of gamma radiations. the result show also that the health hazards due to the ozone produced during irradiation are significant and should not be overlooked. It was observed that in case of 1Ci motor failure, the detection time is 67.5 minutes. While, for 0.1Ci motor failure, the detection time is 32.2 minutes. To fulfill the employee safety limits. it is recommended to have a second control system with ventilation

Saharan Dust Deposition May Affect Phytoplankton Growth in the Mediterranean Sea at Ecological Time Scales

The surface waters of the Mediterranean Sea are extremely poor in the nutrients necessary for plankton growth. At the same time, the Mediterranean Sea borders with the largest and most active desert areas in the world and the atmosphere over the basin is subject to frequent injections of mineral dust particles. We describe statistical correlations between dust deposition over the Mediterranean Sea and surface chlorophyll concentrations at ecological time scales. Aerosol deposition of Saharan origin may explain 1 to 10% (average 5%) of seasonally detrended chlorophyll variability in the low nutrient-low chlorophyll Mediterranean. Most of the statistically significant correlations are positive with main effects in spring over the Eastern and Central Mediterranean, conforming to a view of dust events fueling needed nutrients to the planktonic community. Some areas show negative effects of dust deposition on chlorophyll, coinciding with regions under a large influence of aerosols from European origin. The influence of dust deposition on chlorophyll dynamics may become larger in future scenarios of increased aridity and shallowing of the mixed layer.

Simulation and Parameter Law of HEC-HMS for Multi-Source Flood in Arid Region Based on Three-Dimensional Classification Criteria: A Case Study of Manas River Basin

(1) Background: Aiming at low-accuracy and unclear parameter differentiation of snowmelt ice melting, rainstorm and mixed flood simulation in Northwest Chinese arid inland river basins, this study aimed to improve complex flood simulation ability and support arid area flood prediction via HEC-HMS model optimization and classification standard innovation. (2) Method: A distributed HEC-HMS model was built using topography, soil and land use data. A “meteorology, hydrology, underlying surface” flood classification method was developed, and runoff generation-concentration parameters were calibrated via trial-and-error and Latin hypercube sampling for 36 historical floods (12 each type) to verify model applicability. (3) Result: The classification accuracy reached 92%. All three flood types met simulation standards: flood peak and runoff depth error ≤ ±20%, peak time error < 3 h, average NSE = 0.76 (snowmelt: 0.82, rainstorm: 0.76, mixed: 0.70). Parameters showed gradient differences: snowmelt (CN = 65, Ia = 20 mm, k = 0.3), rainstorm (CN = 80, Ia = 10 mm, k = 0.5), mixed (parameters in between). (4) Conclusions: After parameter optimization, the HEC-HMS model is suitable for multi-source flood simulation in arid areas, and the revealed parameter laws provide a quantitative basis for flood forecasting in similar basins.

A High-Performance Liquid Chromatography Assay Method for the Determination of Lidocaine in Human Serum

Here we report on the development of a selective and sensitive high-performance liquid chromatographic method for the determination of lidocaine in human serum. The extraction of lidocaine and procainamide (internal standard) from serum (0.25 mL) was achieved using diethyl ether under alkaline conditions. After liquid–liquid extraction, the separation of analytes was accomplished using reverse phase extraction. The mobile phase, a combination of acetonitrile and monobasic potassium phosphate, was pumped isocratically through a C18 analytical column. The ultraviolet (UV) wavelength was at 277 nm for the internal standard, and subsequently changed to 210 for lidocaine. The assay exhibited excellent linearity (r2 > 0.999) in peak response over the concentration ranges of 50–5000 ng/mL lidocaine HCl in human serum. The mean absolute recoveries for 50 and 1000 ng/mL lidocaine HCl in serum using the present extraction procedure were 93.9 and 80.42%, respectively. The intra- and inter-day coefficients of variation in the serum were <15% at the lowest, and <12% at other concentrations, and the percent error values were less than 9%. The method displayed a high caliber of sensitivity and selectivity for monitoring therapeutic concentrations of lidocaine in human serum.

Exploring telomere length in mother–newborn pairs in relation to exposure to multiple toxic metals and potential modifying effects by nutritional factors

Background
The uterine environment may influence telomere length at birth, which is essential for cellular function, aging, and disease susceptibility over the lifespan. However, little is known about the impact of toxic chemicals on early-life telomeres. Therefore, we assessed the potential impact of multiple toxic metals on relative telomere length (rTL) in the maternal blood, cord blood, and placenta, as well as the potential modifying effects of pro-oxidants.
Method
In a mother–child cohort in northern Argentina (
n
= 169), we measured multiple toxic metals in the maternal blood or urine collected during late pregnancy, as well as the placenta and cord blood collected at delivery, using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). We assessed associations of log
2
-transformed metal concentrations with rTL, measured in maternal and cord blood leukocytes and the placenta by real-time PCR, using multivariable-adjusted linear regression. Additionally, we tested for modifications by antioxidants (zinc, selenium, folate, and vitamin D

).
Results
Exposure to boron and antimony during pregnancy was associated with shorter maternal rTL, and lithium with longer maternal rTL; a doubling of exposure was associated with changes corresponding to 0.2–0.4 standard deviations (SD) of the rTL. Arsenic concentrations in the placenta (
n
= 98), blood, and urine were positively associated with placental rTL, about 0.2 SD by doubled arsenic. In the cord blood (
n
= 88), only lead was associated with rTL (inversely), particularly in boys (
p
for interaction 0.09). Stratifying by newborn sex showed ten times stronger association in boys (about 0.6 SD) than in girls. The studied antioxidants did not modify the associations, except that with antimony.
Conclusions
Elevated exposure to boron, lithium, arsenic, and antimony was associated with maternal or newborn rTL in a tissue-specific, for lead also sex-specific, manner. Nutritional antioxidants did not generally influence the associations.

Spatial patterns of movement are fundamental to the ecology of animal populations, influencing their social organization, mating systems, demography, and the spatial distribution of prey and competitors. However, our ability to understand the causes and consequences of animal home range patterns has been limited by the descriptive nature of the statistical models used to analyze them. InMechanistic Home Range Analysis, Paul Moorcroft and Mark Lewis develop a radically new framework for studying animal home range patterns based on the analysis of correlated random work models for individual movement behavior. They use this framework to develop a series of mechanistic home range models for carnivore populations.
The authors' analysis illustrates how, in contrast to traditional statistical home range models that merely describe pattern, mechanistic home range models can be used to discover the underlying ecological determinants of home range patterns observed in populations, make accurate predictions about how spatial distributions of home ranges will change following environmental or demographic disturbance, and analyze the functional significance of the movement strategies of individuals that give rise to observed patterns of space use.
By providing researchers and graduate students of ecology and wildlife biology with a more illuminating way to analyze animal movement,Mechanistic Home Range Analysiswill be an indispensable reference for years to come.
