Designing the British post-war home : Kenneth Wood, 1948-1968
\"In Designing the British Post-War Home Fiona Fisher explores the development of modern domestic architecture in Britain through a detailed study of the work of the successful Surrey-based architectural practice of Kenneth Wood. Wood's firm is representative of a geographically distinct category of post-war architectural and design practice - that of the small private practice that flourished in Britain's expanding suburbs after the removal of wartime building restrictions. Such firms, which played an important role in the development of British domestic design, are currently under-represented within architectural histories of the period. The private house represents an important site in which new spatial, material and aesthetic parameters for modern living were defined after the Second World War. Within a British context, the architect-designed private house remained an important 'vehicle for the investigation of architectural ideas' by second generation modernist architects and designers. Through a series of case study houses, designed by Wood's firm, the book reconsiders the progress of modern domestic architecture in Britain and demonstrates the ways in which architectural discourse and practice intersected with the experience, performance and representation of domestic modernity in post-war Britain\"-- Provided by publisher.
The women of the copper country : a novel
\"In July 1913, twenty-five-year-old Annie Clements had seen enough of the world to know that it was unfair. She's spent her whole life in the coal-mining town of Calumet, Michigan, where men risk their lives for meager salaries ... The women labor in the houses of the elite, and send their husbands and sons deep underground each day, dreading the fateful call of the company man telling them their loved ones aren't coming home. When Annie decides to stand up for herself--and the entire town of Calumet--nearly everyone believes she may have taken on more than she is prepared to handle\"-- Provided by publisher.
Self-Sacrificing or Victimized?
Dealing with the concept of motherhood as found in both ancient theological texts written in patriarchal cultures and modern incidents experienced in a patriarchal world, the intent of Kathleen Gallagher Elkins' book was to interpret motherhood beyond traditional church and patriarchal interpretations. Underpinning her analysis is the concept of self-sacrificing, which has stuck in my mind. The three positive characteristics of motherhood she outlines--continuity, community, and pathos or danger--running through the eight case studies she examines make sense and are true.
Exploring Ancient Discourses of Motherhood in Relation to Mary, Mother of Martyrs
Mary, Mother of Martyrs is an eloquently written, well-argued study about a phenomenon--the convergence of motherhood and self-sacrifice--that has deep roots and continued repercussions. Motherhood and childbearing have been scholarly interests of mine for a long time. In my dissertation, published as Birthing Salvation: Gender and Class in Early Christian Childbearing Discourse, I studied early Christian childbearing discourses and mapped how ideas about gender, class, and mothering interrelated with notions of salvation in the Pastoral Epistles, the Acts of Andrew and the Martyrdom of Perpetua and Felicitas. Mary, Mother of Martyrs takes up overlapping themes, such as ancient discourses of motherhood and how these discourses were both perpetuated and reframed in early Christianity.
A Postcolonial, Indian Feminist Response to Mary, Mother of Martyrs
Jacob would argue that by opening up the discourse on maternal self-sacrifice and demonstrating to the readers the ways in which women of color/third-world women strategically and politically use their losses and suffering to create moments of empowerment in their own contexts, Gallagher Elkins forces people to look beyond own presumption that maternal self-sacrifice must be victimizing. She asks to view these mothers both ancient and modern as agents of change and social justice. The ability to construct the experience of maternal self-sacrifice as diverse is an important aspect of Gallagher Elkins' book that expands motherhood to become more inclusive of other experiences. Her monograph is an important piece of work that has helped me not see maternal self-sacrifice through a unidimensional lens of victimhood and suffering but as a tool of agency that resists oppression and a form of social protest.
A Womanist Maternal Response to Self-Sacrifice
Crowder talks about womanist maternal thought. Here, she situate what she had labeled \"womanist maternal thought\" as a foundation of African American \"other\" or \"play\" mothering. She continues by comparing and contrasting first-century motherhood with current communal maternal practices. Understanding maternal moves and mood within the apostle's setting provides a window into his own literary use of motherly language. Scrutiny of Paul's filial wording in the epistle to the Romans sheds light on the naming of Rufus' mother as his \"own\" mother. Finally, this exercise implicates the ways a relationship with this \"play\" mother of African descent molded and reflected Paul's own Jewish identity in the first century.

What are aesthetic opinions in the Arabic calligraphy? and what are the forms of Arabic calligraphy? How calligraphy is a part of Islamic culture and has its own ancient history? The research dealt with the types of Arabic calligraphy and how the calligraphy varies according to each country. How do peoples' cultures have an influence on the calligraphy and that each country has its own specific characteristics. In this research, the researcher discussed the elements of the Saudi heritage. Researcher has done a lot of work with a different process, including printing materials with some techniques, painting on canvas, silk, ceramics, and textile, metal forming (Astana), animation, mosaic and graphic design. On the other hand, I tried to be professional in some of the areas I mentioned earlier. Technology gave the best idea of the path it wanted to be in the future. The researcher does an artwork and draws a lot of drawings that pop up in his mind because he used art as a treatment for his bad mood or stress. The research dealt with how the Arabic calligraphy has very beautiful and wonderful forms. There are many Arabic manuscripts that are used to decorate homes or as very beautiful paintings. I have searched with many pictures indicating that, and showing the beauty of the manuscripts. There are artistic movements that focused on art and advanced it like Constructivism and De Stijl. There are examples of contemporary artists such as Sherine Nashat, Josh Berreer and Dr. Salman Al-Hajri
Velocities of contemporary movements of the Northern Caucasus estimated from GPS observations
The velocity field of the Northern Caucasus based on the results of observations at the Northern Caucasus Geodetic Network (NCGN) stations is represented in the paper. Appreciable horizontal displacement to the northeast with velocity of 26–28 mm/yr relative to the International Terrestrial Reference Frame (ITRF2008) is established. General shortening of the region at a rate of 1–2 mm/yr relative to fixed Eurasia is a source of the contemporary geological and seismic activity in the boundary zone between the Caucasus and the East European Platform.
George L. Mosse and Christian Religious Thought in Contemporary History
Today, nobody would consider George L. Mosse as a historian of Christianity. He is well known primarily for his works on the history of fascism, nationalism and racism. However, not only in the first phase of his career, as a scholar of early modern Europe, he was precisely a historian of Christianity, but his contribution to the understanding of Christian experiences and movements in the last centuries, albeit little known, has continued to be extremely relevant. So this article a reflection about Mosse’s approach to religion, and especially to Christianity, analyses the main results of his researches on the subject and their development and proposes a final appraisal of his legacy in this field of research.
