Strategies for Coordinated Development Between Local Communities and the Northeast China Tiger and Leopard National Park: Case Study of the Hunchun Area

As an important component of China’s conservation strategy, the Northeast China Tiger and Leopard National Park faces conflicts between environmental protection and community development. Taking the Hunchun area as a case study, here a choice experiment is employed to construct a policy-scenario model encompassing participation mechanisms, benefit-sharing models, and industrial development. Our analysis of farmers’ heterogeneous policy preferences reveals the following. (1) Farmers significantly prefer cooperative organization participation, ecological industry, and ecological compensation while showing less acceptance of agricultural deep processing. (2) Heterogeneity analysis indicates that middle-aged, educated, and low-income male farmers have stronger preferences for policy optimization. (3) Existing homogeneous policies do not satisfy diversified stakeholder demands. We propose a governance framework integrating ecology, industry, and institutions, suggesting practical pathways such as optimizing interest distribution mechanisms, innovating green industry models, and establishing cross-regional ecological compensation mechanisms. This study provides theoretical and practical support for reconciling conservation and development in protected areas.

Landscape Performance for Coordinated Development of Rural Communities & Small-Towns Based on “Ecological Priority and All-Area Integrated Development”: Six Case Studies in East China’s Zhejiang Province

Over the last decade, the Chinese government has focused on addressing development challenges in rural areas. The “Ecological Priority and All-Area Integrated Development” concept was thus developed, and it was found to be crucial for rural areas in Eastern Zhejiang Province. A new comprehensive evaluation system was composed by comparing and synthesizing existing Chinese assessment criteria, and landscape performance metrics developed by the Landscape Architecture Foundation. Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Fuzzy Comprehensive Evaluation Method (FCE) were used to conduct post-development evaluation on six cases using the new evaluation system. The results of four cases show that ecology should be considered a high priority when dealing with rural community and small town developments. The other two cases emphasizing infrastructure development verified that “coordinating the development of rural communities and small town area” is crucial for building sustainable and livable rural communities, and avoiding redundancy and inefficiency. The newly developed comprehensive evaluation system integrates existing systems with a broader vision and is more holistic in its objectives for the region. The development-led intervention (based on landscape performance evaluation) is conducive to the implementation of a more scientific and comprehensive development model, with predictable performance.

). SEI offered immediately or shortly following a first episode improves functional and clinical outcomes for those individuals with, and at risk for, serious mental illness (SMI; Correll et al. in JAMA Psychiatry 75(6):555–565,

). In the United States, SEI programs referred to as Coordinated Specialty Care (CSC), have been utilized to provide a beneficial, team-based, multi-component method of treating FEP. However, despite the success, CSC programming is still met with considerable challenges. This article reviews existing CSC literature to identify and explore relevant barriers to successful implementation of CSC. Identified barriers include stigma, cultural competence, disengagement, measurement and evaluation, workforce development, implementation in rural areas, and financial stability. The ongoing efforts to address these barriers are described and areas for continued improvements are discussed.

Soil microbial community and chemical properties response to blueberry–soybean intercropping system

Background and aims
Current global population growth and agricultural land resource limitations have led to intensifying conflicts between grain and fruit production.
Methods
We designed a potted blueberry–soybean intercropping system to evaluate its impacts on crop yield, disease occurrence, and soil microbial community composition using survey statistics, high-throughput sequencing, and correlation analysis.
Results
The results demonstrate that the blueberry–soybean intercropping system is a feasible solution for obtaining additional soybean yield by the filed investigation. \"Blueberry-polluted soil (BPS)\" sampled at a depth of 5 cm and rhizosphere soil sampled from intercropped 'Huayan 1' soybean plants (HYS) showed significantly higher fungal and bacterial diversity than control bulk soil (CK) with no cultivation history. Microbial communities and unique OTUs were differentially enriched in BPS and HYS, respectively, and the HYS effect was more pronounced through high-throughput sequencing. Correlation analysis revealed that pH, organic matter, and total N were the main factors driving soil chemistry-mediated microbial differences in the community between CK and both HYS and BPS. The significantly lower microbial abundance in BPS was likely related to N fixation, whereas significantly enriched bacteria in HYS were related to the N regulatory protein C protein family, N regulatory IIA and P-II2 proteins, N fixation regulation proteins, and other N-related functions (

< 0.05), indicating that blueberry–soybean intercropping significantly improves microbial function in the soil.
Conclusion
These findings demonstrate that intercropping system could improve the acidification of soil and reduce the depletion of soil functional microorganisms caused by continuous monoculture of blueberries. Also, it could help coordinated development of grain and fruit production, particularly in regions facing both food shortages and limited arable land in the world.

Recovering the Vocational Self?: Service User Accounts of Barriers to Work and School and the Role of Early Psychosis Services in Supporting Career Development

Vocational recovery is frequently identified as a primary goal of specialized early intervention in psychosis services (EIS). However, few studies have investigated the multi-level impacts of psychosis and its social sequelae on emerging vocational identities and mechanisms by which EIS may contribute to longer-term career development. The goal of this study was to deepen our understanding of the experiences of young adults with early psychosis during and following discharge from EIS as they relate to vocational derailment, identity and career development. We conducted in-depth interviews with 25 former EIS recipients and five family members (N = 30). Interviews were analyzed using modified grounded theory, with an orientation to generating a rich, theory informed understanding young people’s experiences. Approximately half of the participants in our sample were not in employment, education, or training (NEET) and had applied for or were receiving disability benefits (SSI/SSDI). Among those participants who were working, the majority reported short-term, low-wage work. Thematic findings elucidate factors underlying the erosion of vocational identity, as well as ways in which both participant-reported vocational service characteristics and socioeconomic background shape different pathways to college, work and/or disability benefits both during and following discharge from EIS. Findings underscore the need for additional research on vocational identity among youth and young adults with early psychosis and the development and evaluation of interventions designed to support career development, address social and structural barriers to education and training, and foster long-term socioeconomic mobility.

A New Framework for Coordinated Community Development in Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park, China

Sustainable community development is a prerequisite for national parks’ coordinated ecological and socio-economic development. This study analyzes the sustainable development challenges communities face in national parks, including the marginalization of indigenous peoples, the passive role of stakeholders, and insufficient protection of community interests. Using a grounded theory approach and a mixed research method (semi-structured interviews and questionnaires), the development constraints of community residents in Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park in China were systematically studied. The research framework identified five core dimensions (economic, social, ecological, institutional, and cultural) and eight major categories that characterize the community’s development dilemma. The analysis revealed systemic problems, including differences in income distribution, limited access to resources, gaps in policy implementation, and ambiguous stakeholder roles. A new framework for coordinated development of national park communities was constructed through multidimensional analysis, and coordinated development strategies were proposed from the five dimensions of economy, society, ecology, institution, and culture. These findings contribute to the theoretical underpinnings of national park governance in China and offer a transferable methodological system for managing nature reserves and national parks worldwide, particularly in achieving a balance between ecological protection and community development needs.

Coordinated scheduling problems for sustainable production of container terminals: a literature review

A container terminal plays a significant role in global supply chain. Coordinated scheduling is one of the most important issues for sustainable development of container terminals. This research provides an in-depth survey of the coordinated scheduling for container terminals in order to identify existing research streams for future investigations. Researches on the coordinated scheduling of container terminals which are published between 2010 and 2021 are reviewed and classified. Related coordinated scheduling models and solution methods are analyzed. Research gaps and future directions are also lighted up. This will help new researchers quickly understanding the distribution of researches on these fields. The findings are important for both research and practice perspectives.

This article is composed of three independent commentaries about the state of Integrated, Coordinated, Open, Networked (ICON) principles in the American Geophysical Union Biogeosciences section, and discussion on the opportunities and challenges of adopting them. Each commentary focuses on a different topic: (a) Global collaboration, technology transfer, and application (Section 2), (b) Community engagement, community science, education, and stakeholder involvement (Section 3), and (c) Field, experimental, remote sensing, and real‐time data research and application (Section 4). We discuss needs and strategies for implementing ICON and outline short‐ and long‐term goals. The inclusion of global data and international community engagement are key to tackling grand challenges in biogeosciences. Although recent technological advances and growing open‐access information across the world have enabled global collaborations to some extent, several barriers, ranging from technical to organizational to cultural, have remained in advancing interoperability and tangible scientific progress in biogeosciences. Overcoming these hurdles is necessary to address pressing large‐scale research questions and applications in the biogeosciences, where ICON principles are essential. Here, we list several opportunities for ICON, including coordinated experimentation and field observations across global sites, that are ripe for implementation in biogeosciences as a means to scientific advancements and social progress. Plain Language Summary Biogeosciences is an interdisciplinary field that requires multiscale global data and concerted international community efforts to tackle grand challenges. However, several technical, institutional, and cultural hurdles have remained as major roadblocks toward scientific progress, hindering seamless global data acquisition and international community engagement. To bring a paradigm shift in biogeosciences, there is a need to implement integrated, coordinated, open, and networked efforts, collectively known as the Integrated, Coordinated, Open, Networked (ICON) principles. In this article, we present three related commentaries about the state of ICON, discuss needs to reduce geographical bias in data for enhancing scientific progress, and identify action items. Action items are primarily people‐centric and include but are not limited to: longer‐term funding priorities to institutionalize capacity and reduce entry costs, engagement of local stakeholders across the globe, incentivization of collaborations, and development of training and workshops for capacity building. This study aimed to explore clinician roles and experiences related to the implementation and sustainability of coordinated specialty care (CSC) programs for first episode psychosis. Qualitative interviews were conducted with 20 CSC providers and team members, recruited from five CSC programs. Using a semi-structured guide, interviews explored experiences with the delivery of CSC in the context of community-based outpatient mental health agencies and the challenges with implementation. Interviews were audio recorded, transcribed, and analyzed using thematic analysis. Themes were parsed into two overarching categories, provider, and organizational-level factors, and further distilled into subthemes which interacted with one another to form an interacting web of barriers to successful programmatic implementation for CSC programs. Study findings have important implications for development of future policy for financing mental health agencies, the creation of additional materials, supports for the model, and hiring and retention of staff for future implemented CSC programs.

The cooperative development relationship between Nature Reserves and local communities

The coordinated relationship between Nature Reserves (NRs) and adjacent communities has a significant impact on both these local communities and conservation management practices. However, the precise relationship between NRs and their surrounding communities remains poorly understood, whether it is coordinated or unbalanced? This study employed a matrix analysis approach alongside a coordination degree model to assess the relationship and the degree of coordination between the Xiaoheishan NRs (Xhs NRs) and local communities. In addition, a structural equation model was used to analyze the factors that influence the degree of coordination between the Xhs NRs and adjacent communities. Taking into account the willingness of these communities, a prospective development model was proposed. The results of the study revealed that: (1) the relationship between the Xhs NRs and their surrounding communities was predominantly characterized by a protection‐oriented approach, particularly in the subprotected regions of Xhs, Dxs, and Jzs. (2) The path analysis revealed that the level of dependence, knowledge, and cost perception among the Xhs NRs communities had a direct negative influence on the degree of coordination. Conversely, the attitudes and perceived benefits to the Xhs NRs had a direct positive effect. (3) The pathway to future development involves a triple model approach: a public participation model, an economic model that focuses on mutual benefits and a protection and poverty alleviation model. The relationship between NRs and surrounding communities should be accurately defined; and the contradiction between protection and development should be fully coordinated. To achieve coordinated development of NRs and communities that reside close by, the Xhs NRs, along with other smaller and scattered NRs, should actively involve the public, particularly local communities, in conservation management. 自然保护区与周边社区的协调关系,对当地社区 发展 和保护管理实践有着重大影响。然而,目前二者之间的确切关系是协同还是失衡,仍知之甚少。本研究采用矩阵分析方法和协调度模型,评估了小黑山自然保护区与周边社区的关系模式和二者之间的协调程度;采用结构方程模型,分析了影响小黑山自然保护区与邻近社区协调程度的因素 ; 结合社区发展意愿,提出了未来潜在的发展模式。研究结果表明:(1)小黑山自然保护区与周边社区的关系主要以保护为导向,这一特性在小黑山、大雪山和江中山子保护区尤为明显。(2)路径分析显示,小黑山自然保护区周边社区对保护区的依赖程度、社区的知识水平和社区对保护区建立带来的成本感知对协调程度有直接的负面影响;社区对该保护区的态度和对保护区建立带来的收益感知则对协调程度有直接的积极影响。(3)未来的 潜在 发展途径包括三种模式:公众参与模式、以互利共赢为核心的经济模式、保护和扶贫相结合模式。在未来的保护管理中,应准确界定自然保护区与周边社区的关系,充分协调保护与发展的矛盾。为实现自然保护区与周边社区的协调发展,小黑山自然保护区及其他规模较小、分布零散的自然保护区,应积极吸纳公众尤其是当地社区参与到保护管理中。【审阅:郭雪艳】 There are conflicts between the Longling Xiaoheishan Nature Reserves (Xhs NRs) in Yunnan, China, and their surrounding communities. Comprehending the precise nature of this relationship and the factors contributing to these conflicts is crucial for enhancing the effectiveness of conservation management. Our findings indicate that the Xhs NRs predominantly adhere to a conservation model that compromises local community development. The establishment and policies of the Xhs NRs have significantly impacted the traditional livelihoods of local communities. Furthermore, the tensions arising from these impacts on livelihoods pose a considerable threat to the effectiveness of conservation management. Our study also revealed that the local communities' perception of negative impacts associated with the establishment of the Xhs NRs, such as loss of income and wildlife destruction, had a more substantial influence on their attitudes toward the Xhs NRs and their perception of harmony, compared to the perceived positive impacts. We believe that to resolve the conflicts between the Xhs NRs and adjacent communities, conservation managers should engage some external forces. This includes the introduction of external projects aligned with local development needs, with particular emphasis on the involvement of local communities.
