Geometry, Topology and p-Adic Numbers in Geospatial Data Modelling, Management and Processing: Review and Future Approaches
Geometry and topology are both central concepts in geospatial data modelling and management. While geometry is the central concept for computational geometry applications, e.g. to intersect surfaces and solids in 3D space, topology is helpful for many application classes starting from city modelling to subsurface modelling and indoor navigation. Furthermore, p-adic numbers are useful for describing hierarchical processes on topological models. In this paper we first shortly review geometry- and topology-based approaches used for geospatial applications. We then describe our approach on turning geometry “upside down” focusing on topology during the whole process of distributed geospatial computing, data modelling, data management, and simulation. Furthermore, the way to use p-adic numbers for the description of hierarchical processes on topological models is shown for the example of simulation and the idea of p-adic analysis in distributed simulations is presented in the context of topological city and building models. The approach opens new insights such as topological relationships, components, and efficiently studying of the approximate behaviour of processes in the built environment using distributed computational systems. Finally, exemplary applications are presented to underline the importance of this new approach.
Probing the Structure and Evolution of BASS Active Galactic Nuclei through Eddington Ratios
We constrain the intrinsic Eddington ratio (λ Edd) distribution function for local active galactic nuclei (AGN) in bins of low and high obscuration [log(NH/cm−2)≤22 and 22 −1), the trend is reversed, with <30% of AGN having log(NH/cm−2)>22 , which we suggest is mainly due to the small fraction of time spent in a highly obscured state. Considering the Eddington ratio distribution function of narrow-line and broad-line AGN from our prior work, we see a qualitatively similar picture. To disentangle temporal and geometric effects at high λ Edd, we explore plausible clearing scenarios such that the time-weighted covering factors agree with the observed population ratio. We find that the low fraction of obscured AGN at high λ Edd is primarily due to the fact that the covering factor drops very rapidly, with more than half the time spent with <10% covering factor. We also find that nearly all obscured AGN at high-λ Edd exhibit some broad lines. We suggest that this is because the height of the depleted torus falls below the height of the broad-line region, making the latter visible from all lines of sight.

Confound modelling in UK Biobank brain imaging
Dealing with confounds is an essential step in large cohort studies to address problems such as unexplained variance and spurious correlations. UK Biobank is a powerful resource for studying associations between imaging and non-imaging measures such as lifestyle factors and health outcomes, in part because of the large subject numbers. However, the resulting high statistical power also raises the sensitivity to confound effects, which therefore have to be carefully considered. In this work we describe a set of possible confounds (including non-linear effects and interactions that researchers may wish to consider for their studies using such data). We include descriptions of how we can estimate the confounds, and study the extent to which each of these confounds affects the data, and the spurious correlations that may arise if they are not controlled. Finally, we discuss several issues that future studies should consider when dealing with confounds.
Implementation and Validation of a Simple Direct Identification Method for an Experimental Multi-Span Web Transport System
The industrial processes that require the use of the web require a control system which allows for preserving the properties of the web unaltered, avoiding the risk of wrinkling, tearing, breakage and other defects. This control generally takes place by detecting the tension and the speed in certain points of the system since these variables determine the stress state on the web, which, if altered beyond certain ranges, can lead to the defects mentioned above. The problem of tension and web speed control is very demanding because the system’s dynamic is a function of many process variables that often vary over a wide range. In this study, an experimental system consisting of 12 rollers, four motorised, was analysed. This system was divided into four subsystems according to the logic of decentralised control. The tension of the initial and final subsystems and the speeds of the two central subsystems were monitored. This study proposes estimating continuous-time transfer functions using experimental time-domain data. A nonlinear least-squares search-based method minimises a weighted prediction error norm for directly identifying the mathematical model used to describe the web transport system. To test the performance of the proposed strategy, experimental data were collected in an open-loop configuration with constant voltage given to the four servo motors. The collected data were subsequently processed to define an extremely simple system model composed of a very limited number of parameters representing the system through transfer functions. The model was further validated by comparing the results obtained through simulations with the experimental data obtained with different inputs, and was also validated with some closed-loop tests.
