COVID-19 and the digitalisation of cardiovascular training and education-a review of guiding themes for equitable and effective post-graduate telelearning
The coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has had an unprecedented impact leading to novel adaptations in post-graduate medical education for cardiovascular and general internal medicine. Whilst the results of initial community COVID-19 vaccination are awaited, continuation of multimodality teaching and training that incorporates telelearning will have enduring benefit to post-graduate education and will place educational establishments in good stead to nimbly respond in future pandemic-related public health emergencies. With the rise in innovative virtual learning solutions, medical educators will have to leverage technology to develop electronic educational materials and virtual courses that facilitate adult learning. Technology-enabled virtual learning is thus a timely progression of hybrid classroom initiatives that are already adopted to varying degrees, with a need for faculty to serve as subject matter experts, to host and moderate online discussions, and to provide feedback and overall mentorship. As an extension from existing efforts, simulation-based teaching (SBT) and learning and the use of mixed reality technology should also form a greater core in the cardiovascular medicine curriculum. We highlight five foundational themes for building a successful e-learning model in cardiovascular and general post-graduate medical training: (1) digital solutions and associated infrastructure; (2) equity in access; (3) participant engagement; (4) diversity and inclusion; and (5) patient confidentiality and governance framework. With digitalisation impacting our everyday lives and now how we teach and train in medicine, these five guiding principles provide a cognitive scaffold for careful consideration of the required ecosystem in which cardiovascular and general post-graduate medical education can effectively operate. With due consideration of various e-learning options and associated infrastructure needs; and adoption of strategies for participant engagement under sound and just governance, virtual training in medicine can be effective, inclusive and equitable through the COVID-19 era and beyond.
Blended and Online Learning for Global Citizenship
By showcasing international, European, and community-based projects, this volume explores how online technologies using collaborative and blended learning can be used to bolster social cohesion and increase students' understanding of what it means to be a global citizen. Development of a Relational Database for Learning Management Systems
In today's world, Web-Based Distance Education Systems have a great importance. Web-based Distance Education Systems are usually known as Learning Management Systems (LMS). In this article, a database design, which was developed to create an educational institution as a Learning Management System, is described. In this sense, developed Learning Management System consists of basis of Virtual Education Institutions. In this study, a fully relational database design has been realized in compliance with SCORM standards and got ready to be used as Virtual Education Institutions. This system can be used for any required education institute and it can be run within the same interface. In LMS that will be generated, a faculty or institute can be defined and academic and all administrative processes of the defined institute can be managed with the designed system. Proposed database design has been used in a LMS of Afyon Kocatepe University. In this system, many processes like indexing, uploading, downloading, production and editing of web based learning materials can also be performed easily and safely. [PUBLICATION ABSTRACT]
Design and Development of a Web-based Interactive Software Tool for Teaching Operating Systems
Operating Systems (OS) is an important and mandatory discipline in many Computer Science, Information Systems and Computer Engineering curricula. Some of its topics require a careful and detailed explanation from the instructor as they often involve theoretical concepts and somewhat complex mechanisms, demanding a certain degree of abstraction from the students if they are to gain a full understanding. In this paper an overview of an interactive e-learning and web-based software tool is provided, which has been designed and developed for undergraduate university students of the Department of Applied Informatics in Management and Economy, Technological Educational Institute of Messolonghi, in Messolonghi, Greece. The aim of this software development was the self learning promotion related to memory management operations and especially the page replacement algorithms operation to be used in everyday OS classrooms. Thus undergraduate students can easily explore the operations of those algorithms through an interaction with the software. More specifically, students can explore each algorithm's mechanism separately and learn from their mistakes as shown automatically by the software in real time. All students' performances are stored in a database. This paper also proposes a study plan to examine the intention of students to use the software in their learning through a survey of a sample of undergraduates. The software does not intend to render obsolete or replace existing pedagogical approaches but instead will complement the existing teaching and learning methods of Operating Systems. Developing Inquiry for Learning
Developing Inquiry for Learning shows how university tutors can help students to improve their abilities to learn and to become professional inquirers. An increasing proportion of students entering higher education seem to assume that learning is a relatively passive process. This may be the largest single limitation on their achievement. University tutors need to be able to respond creatively to students' learning needs and difficulties. The modern teaching environment in higher education demands a sophisticated approach to teaching, learning and assessment i.e. the curriculum: its planning, its development and tutors' professional development. Tutors need fresh ideas about how to challenge students' spoon-fed approach, to enable them to become collaborative, yet independently motivated learners. In the innovative and practically proven approach developed by the authors of this book, students are guided to implement action research into their learning practices and reflections. Using a rolling programme of cyclical inquiries and whole group 'conferences' on improving learning, students write 'patches' on learning development which are then shared across the year group online. Each student's cumulative set of patches, together with their regular reflective writing, provide the basis for assembling a composite final assignment, a 'Patchwork Text', for assessment. This style of curriculum and assessment organisation encourages regular peer feedback and formative assessment, as part of the whole module process. This is a dynamic approach which builds personal confidence within students, both as learners and as professionals.
