Tunneling estimates and approximate controllability for hypoelliptic equations

This memoir is concerned with quantitative unique continuation estimates for equations involving a “sum of squares” operator
The first result is the tunneling estimate
The main
result is a stability estimate for solutions to the hypoelliptic wave equation
We then prove the approximate controllability of the
hypoelliptic heat equation
We also explain how the analyticity
assumption can be relaxed, and a boundary
Most results turn out to be optimal on a family of Grushin-type operators.
The main proof relies on the
general strategy to produce quantitative unique continuation estimates, developed by the authors in Laurent-Léautaud (2019).

This volume contains the proceedings of the 2016 Summer School on Fractal Geometry and Complex Dimensions, in celebration of Michel L. Lapidus's 60th birthday, held from June 21-29, 2016, at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, California. The theme of the contributions is fractals and dynamics and content is split into four parts, centered around the following themes: Dimension gaps and the mass transfer principle, fractal strings and complex dimensions, Laplacians on fractal domains and SDEs with fractal noise, and aperiodic order (Delone sets and tilings).
Koopman-mode decomposition of the cylinder wake
2013
The Koopman operator provides a powerful way of analysing nonlinear flow dynamics using linear techniques. The operator defines how observables evolve in time along a nonlinear flow trajectory. In this paper, we perform a Koopman analysis of the first Hopf bifurcation of the flow past a circular cylinder. First, we decompose the flow into a sequence of Koopman modes, where each mode evolves in time with one single frequency/growth rate and amplitude/phase, corresponding to the complex eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the Koopman operator, respectively. The analytical construction of these modes shows how the amplitudes and phases of nonlinear global modes oscillating with the vortex shedding frequency or its harmonics evolve as the flow develops and later sustains self-excited oscillations. Second, we compute the dynamic modes using the dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) algorithm, which fits a linear combination of exponential terms to a sequence of snapshots spaced equally in time. It is shown that under certain conditions the DMD algorithm approximates Koopman modes, and hence provides a viable method to decompose the flow into saturated and transient oscillatory modes. Finally, the relevance of the analysis to frequency selection, global modes and shift modes is discussed.

The solution of the eigenvalue problem in bounded domains with planar and cylindrical stratification is a necessary preliminary task for the construction of modal solutions to canonical problems with discontinuities. The computation of the complex eigenvalue spectrum must be very accurate since losing or misplacing one of the thereto linked modes will have an important impact on the field solution. The approach followed in a number of previous works is to construct the corresponding transcendental equation and locate its roots in the complex plane using the Newton–Raphson method or Cauchy-integral-based techniques. Nevertheless, this approach is cumbersome, and its numerical stability decreases dramatically with the number of layers. An alternative, approach consists in the numerical evaluation of the matrix eigenvalues for the weak formulation for the respective 1D Sturm–Liouville problem using linear algebra tools. An arbitrary number of layers can thus be easily and robustly treated, with continuous material gradients being a limiting case. Although this approach is often used in high frequency studies involving wave propagation, this is the first time that has been used for the induction problem arising in an eddy current inspection situation. The developed method is implemented in Matlab and is used to deal with the following problems: magnetic material with a hole, a magnetic cylinder, and a magnetic ring. In all the conducted tests, the results are obtained in a very short time, without missing a single eigenvalue.

This volume contains the proceedings of the CRM Workshops on Probabilistic Methods in Spectral Geometry and PDE, held from August 22-26, 2016 and Probabilistic Methods in Topology, held from November 14-18, 2016 at the Centre de Recherches Mathématiques, Université de Montréal, Montréal, Quebec, Canada. Probabilistic methods have played an increasingly important role in many areas of mathematics, from the study of random groups and random simplicial complexes in topology, to the theory of random Schrödinger operators in mathematical physics. The workshop on Probabilistic Methods in Spectral Geometry and PDE brought together some of the leading researchers in quantum chaos, semi-classical theory, ergodic theory and dynamical systems, partial differential equations, probability, random matrix theory, mathematical physics, conformal field theory, and random graph theory. Its emphasis was on the use of ideas and methods from probability in different areas, such as quantum chaos (study of spectra and eigenstates of chaotic systems at high energy); geometry of random metrics and related problems in quantum gravity; solutions of partial differential equations with random initial conditions. The workshop Probabilistic Methods in Topology brought together researchers working on random simplicial complexes and geometry of spaces of triangulations (with connections to manifold learning); topological statistics, and geometric probability; theory of random groups and their properties; random knots; and other problems. This volume covers recent developments in several active research areas at the interface of Probability, Semiclassical Analysis, Mathematical Physics, Theory of Automorphic Forms and Graph Theory.

One dimensional beta Dirac system
2025
In this study, the beta fractional Dirac system is discussed. After the definitions and theorems used in the study are given, The self-adjoint boundary value issue is posed and the existence and uniqueness theoremfor the Dirac system is established. The eigenfunction expansions of the beta fractional Dirac system are provided along with the construction of the corresponding Green matrix. Finally, some examples related to the subject are given.

Limit profiles for reversible Markov chains
2022
In a recent breakthrough, Teyssier (Ann Probab 48(5):2323–2343, 2020) introduced a new method for approximating the distance from equilibrium of a random walk on a group. He used it to study the limit profile for the random transpositions card shuffle. His techniques were restricted to conjugacy-invariant random walks on groups; we derive similar approximation lemmas for random walks on homogeneous spaces and for general reversible Markov chains. We illustrate applications of these lemmas to some famous problems: the k-cycle shuffle, sharpening results of Hough (Probab Theory Relat Fields 165(1–2):447–482, 2016) and Berestycki, Schramm and Zeitouni (Ann Probab 39(5):1815–1843, 2011), the Ehrenfest urn diffusion with many urns, sharpening results of Ceccherini-Silberstein, Scarabotti and Tolli (J Math Sci 141(2):1182–1229, 2007), a Gibbs sampler, which is a fundamental tool in statistical physics, with Binomial prior and hypergeometric posterior, sharpening results of Diaconis, Khare and Saloff-Coste (Stat Sci 23(2):151–178, 2008).
