Introduction: Oxidative stress, caused by an imbalance between reactive oxygen species (ROS) and antioxidants, contributes to chronic diseases. Malondialdehyde (MDA), a marker of oxidative damage, is commonly used to assess this stress. Meditation, especially mindfulness practices, has shown potential in reducing oxidative stress. This pilot study investigates the impact of Sidhakarya Meditation, a specific mindfulness-based technique, on MDA levels in individuals experiencing moderate stress. Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of Sidhakarya Meditation in reducing MDA levels, a key biomarker of oxidative stress. Methodology: A randomized pre-test and post-test control group design was employed. A total of 60 participants (mean age 34.5 ± 8.2 years) were randomly assigned to the intervention group (Group B), which practiced daily 30-minute Sidhakarya meditation sessions for 6 weeks, or the control group (Group A), which maintained their usual activities. MDA levels were measured using the thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) assay. Psychological stress and mood were assessed using the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) and the Profile of Mood States (POMS). Results: Of the 60 participants, 55 completed the study. The intervention group showed a 30% reduction in MDA levels (from 1780 nmol/mL to 1242 nmol/mL, p = 0.01), along with significant improvements in stress (p = 0.04) and mood (p = 0.03). Discussion: Sidhakarya Meditation effectively reduced oxidative stress and improved emotional well-being, supporting its potential as a non-pharmacological intervention for stress management. Conclusions: This study highlights Sidhakarya Meditation as a promising approach for reducing oxidative stress and improving psychological health.

Introduction: physical activity (PA) is recognized as a safe and beneficial intervention for individuals diagnosed with cancer. It is recommended that all cancer patients engage in regular physical activity as an integral component of a comprehensive treatment plan.. Objective: to critically evaluate the role of physical activity in modulating immune and oxidative stress biomarkers in cancer patients.. Methodology: A comprehensive search across several prominent academic databases—including ScienceDirect, PubMed, Springer, Scopus, Taylor & Francis, Sage, Google Scholar, and Wiley—resulted in the identification of 1,447 relevant articles. A total of eleven studies that satisfied the inclusion criteria were incorporated into the narrative review, followed by an assessment of the risk of bias for each study using the RoB 2.0 tool.. Results: of the eleven studies analyzed, 36.4% had low bias risk, 18.2% had potential bias concerns, and 45.5% had high bias risk.. Discussion: PA has been repeatedly demonstrated to influence the regulation of immune responses and oxidative stress indicators in individuals with cancer. It aids in boosting the function of immune cells, including CD8⁺ T lymphocytes and NK cells, and promotes the activation of antioxidant enzymes such as SOD, CAT, and GPX. Additionally, it reduces pro-inflammatory markers and supports gene and cytokine expression related to immune regulation, making it a promising adjuvant to improve cancer therapy outcomes.. Conclusions: PA has been demonstrated to enhance immune system performance and mitigate oxidative stress among cancer patients, concurrently augmenting the cytotoxic capabilities of NK cells and CD8⁺ T lymphocytes in targeting and destroying malignant cells.

Background: Increased oxidative stress results from both exposure to and the body's generation of free radicals. It is well recognized that exercise lowers oxidative stress. Nevertheless, nothing is known about how yoga affects oxidative stress. Research objectives: This study sought to ascertain how yoga practice affected the reduction of malondialdehide levels, which are an indicator of oxidative stress. Methods: For this study, a number of journal databases, including Pubmed, Web of Science, and Science Direct, were searched. The study considered a number of factors, including studies conducted between 2015 and 2025 on yoga and malondialdehide in humans. The systematic review excluded articles that did not meet the inclusion criteria; for example, those that used animals not used in research. A total of 165 publications were found using databases from Web of Science, Science Direct, and Pubmed. The need for this systemic shift is discussed in ten carefully selected, peer-reviewed papers. Preferred Reporting Systematics and Meta-analysis (PRISMA) was used to create the standard operating procedure for this study. Results: It is clear from the findings of this thorough investigation that yoga practice can lower malondialdehide levels in people. Conclusion: Human malondialdehide levels have been demonstrated to decrease after yoga activity. So this can be a therapy to reduce free radical levels in the body. Antecedentes: El aumento del estrés oxidativo se debe tanto a la exposición como a la generación de radicales libres por parte del cuerpo. Es bien sabido que el ejercicio reduce el estrés oxidativo. Sin embargo, se desconoce cómo el yoga afecta al estrés oxidativo. Objetivos de la investigación: Este estudio buscó determinar cómo la práctica de yoga afecta la reducción de los niveles de malondialdehido, un indicador de estrés oxidativo. Métodos: Para este estudio, se realizaron búsquedas en diversas bases de datos de revistas científicas, como PubMed, Web of Science y Science Direct. El estudio consideró diversos factores, incluyendo estudios realizados entre 2015 y 2025 sobre yoga y malondialdehido en humanos. La revisión sistemática excluyó los artículos que no cumplían los criterios de inclusión; por ejemplo, aquellos que utilizaban animales no utilizados en la investigación. Se encontraron 165 publicaciones utilizando bases de datos de Web of Science, Science Direct y PubMed. La necesidad de este cambio sistémico se analiza en diez artículos cuidadosamente seleccionados y revisados por pares. Introduction and Objective: Insulin resistance is a main complication associated to obesity. Rice bran and exercise seem effective for reducing obesity complications. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the effects of aerobic exercise (EX) and rice bran extract (RB) on the expression of Akt/mTOR genes and oxidative stress markers in the skeletal muscle of rats fed a high-fat diet (HFD). Methodology: Thirty female Wistar rats were randomly divided into five groups: control normal diet (ND-Con), control HFD (HFD-Con), HFD-aerobic exercise (EX), HFD-RB extract (RB), and HFD-EX-RB. EX-groups ran on a treadmill five times a week for four weeks and RB groups received 60 mg/kg/day of RB extract. At the end of the study, rats were sacrificed, and their quadriceps muscles were removed. Akt/mTOR gene expression and oxidative stress markers were determined. Results: HFD led to significant decrease in gene expression of Akt, mTOR, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase activities, while increasing malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration. The EX-group showed significant increase in Akt/mTOR gene expression, while no noticeable effects were observed in RB. The Akt gene expression was significantly higher in EX-RB group than in HFD-CON group, with no effect in SOD. RB caused significant increase in SOD activity compared to HFD-Con group. Catalase activity in EX, RB, and EX-RB groups was significantly higher than in the HFD-Con group. The MDA concentration in the EX, RB, and EX-RB groups was significantly lower than in HFD-Con group. Conclusions: EX and RB can be suitable treatments for reducing HFD complications in skeletal muscle tissue. Introducción y Objetivo: Resistencia a la insulina es una complicación clave asociada a obesidad. Salvado de arroz y ejercicio parecen métodos efectivos para reducir estas complicaciones. El objetivo del estudio fue determinar efectos del ejercicio aeróbico (EX) y extracto de salvado de arroz (RB) en la expresión de genes Akt/mTOR y marcadores de estrés oxidativo en músculo esquelético de ratas alimentadas con dieta alta en grasas (HFD). Metodología: Treinta ratas Wistar hembras distribuidas aleatoriamente en cinco grupos: control dieta normal (ND-Con), control HFD (HFD-Con), HFD-ejercicio aeróbico (EX), HFD-extracto de RB (RB) y HFD-EX-RB. Los grupos EX corrieron en cinta cinco veces por semana durante cuatro semanas, y los grupos RB recibieron 60 mg/kg/día de extracto de RB. Finalmente, las ratas fueron eutanasiadas y se extrajeron los músculos cuádriceps, determinando expresión de Akt/mTOR y marcadores de estrés oxidativo. Resultados: HFD produjo disminución significativa en la expresión de Akt, mTOR, y actividades de superóxido dismutasa (SOD) y catalasa, aumentando la concentración de malondialdehído (MDA). EX mostró aumento significativo en la expresión de Akt/mTOR, sin efectos en RB. La expresión de Akt fue significativamente mayor en EX-RB que en HFD-CON. EX no afectó a SOD. RB causó un aumento significativo en SOD en comparación con HFD-Con. La actividad de catalasa en EX, RB y EX-RB fue significativamente mayor que en HFD-Con. La concentración de MDA en EX, RB y EX-RB fue significativamente menor que en HFD-Con. Conclusiones: EX y RB pueden ser tratamientos adecuados para reducir complicaciones de HFD en tejido muscular esquelético. Introdução e Objectivo: A resistência à insulina é uma complicação importante associada à obesidade. Poupar água e utilizar métodos eficazes para reduzir estas complicações é fundamental. O objetivo do estudo é determinar os efeitos do exercício aeróbico (EX) e do extrato de água da água (RB) na expressão dos genes Akt/mTOR e nas marcas de ésteres oxidativos em ossos musculares de ratos alimentados com dieta hiperlipídica (HFD). Resultados: A HFD produziu uma redução significativa na expressão de Akt, mTOR e superóxido dismutase (SOD) e nas atividades catalíticas, aumentando a concentração de malondialdeído (MDA). O EX aumentou mais significativamente na expressão de Akt/mTOR, sem efeito no RB. A expressão de Akt é significativamente maior em EX-RB do que em HFD-CON. O EX não foi atribuído à SOD. O RB causou um aumento significativo da SOD em comparação com o HFD-Con. A atividade cat em EX, RB e EX-RB foi significativamente maior do que em HFD-Con. A concentração de MDA no EX, RB e EX-RB foi significativamente superior à do HFD-Con. Conclusões: O EX e o RB podem ser tratados adequadamente para reduzir as complicações da HFD nos escudos musculares.

The potential of polyphenol compounds in grapes to reduce oxidative stress and inflammation after exercise: systematic review

Introduction: Mechanical stress and inflammation contribute to exercise-induced muscle damage. Objective: This research analyzed the potential of polyphenolic compounds in grapes to prevent inflammation and lower oxidative stress after exercise. Methodology: This research employed a systematic review to guide the researchers in achieving the objectives. It involved a thorough search of global databases, such as Web of Science, Scopus, Embase, and Pubmed. The inclusion criteria were articles investigating grapes, inflammation, oxidative stress, and physical exercise published within the last five years. On the other hand, articles that were not reputable or indexed by these databases were excluded from the search. The initial search process generated 2947 articles. After undertaking several screening processes, 8 articles were finally selected and analyzed. Results: This research shows that the polyphenol content in grapes has antioxidant and inflammatory properties which can reduce levels of oxidative stress and inflammation. Discussion: The polyphenol content works by reducing ROS, MDA, and TBARS levels and increasing GSH levels. Furthermore, grapes also have anti-inflammatory properties that reduce uncontrolled inflammation as a result of intense exercise. In this case, grapes work by blocking several inflammatory pathways and decreasing inflammatory markers. In vivo studies also confirmed these anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits by stimulating eNOS gene expression and increasing CAT, SOD, and GPx4 levels. Conclusions: The polyphenol content in grapes can potentially reduce oxidative stress due to its antioxidant properties. Besides, the grapes have anti-inflammatory properties, which are responsible for lowering uncontrolled inflammation and alleviating muscle pain fierceness.

Introduction: In the past decades, the synthesis of chemical compounds has resulted in a high number of substances used to protect crops from pests. Most pesticides have been used in large quantities for agricultural purposes. Acute and chronic poisoning are common among agricultural workers and the general population because of their use in different fields. Toxic exposure to these compounds is a major problem for toxicology, as it has an impact on public health due to its significant morbidity and disability. These compounds, when in contact with the human body, produce neurotoxic alterations and trigger molecular mechanisms related to lipid peroxidation, where reactive oxygen species can increase intracellular oxidative processes. Objective: To carry out a review of the scientific literature related to diseases caused by oxidative stress induced by pesticides. Materials and methods: A review of articles in PubMed was carried out using the keywords: Oxidative stress; Pesticides; Lipid peroxidation; Toxicity. The articles related to oxidative stress induced by pesticides were selected. Results: Some hematological, neurological, metabolic and genotoxic diseases may be related to lipid peroxidation induced by pesticides. Conclusion: This article presents a review of the scientific literature on oxidative stress, lipid peroxidation induced by pesticides and the different related diseases that can affect the general population.

The objective of this research is to establish the impact of endurance training of moderate intensity and resistance exercises on the mitigation of oxidative stress in students with obesity. The research engaged a cohort of 30 female students, characterized by obesity, with an age average of 22.30±1.92 years and a Body Mass Index (BMI) averaging 31.77±2.72 kg/m2. These participants were randomly allocated into three distinct groups: the control group (CN, n=10), the group undergoing endurance training (ET, n=10), and the group subjected to strength training (ST, n=10). The intervention involving endurance training was executed at an intensity level of 60-70% HRmax, with each training session lasting between 40 to 60 minutes. Whereas, the strength training regimen was implemented with a load intensity of 60-70% 1RM, 4-6 sets, and 12-15 repetitions for each set. The intervention was administered with a regularity of three times per week for four weeks. Data collection was carried out by taking blood samples before and 24 hours after the last intervention—analysis of MDA levels utilizing the TBARs technique served as an indicator of oxidative stress. The technique employed for data analysis was the ANOVA test, then continued with the LSD post hoc test with a significant level (p≤0.05). The results showed that the average pre-MDA levels in CN, ET, and ST were (31.07±5.97, 32.12±8.91, and 31.36±8.52 ng/mL) respectively p=0.953. The mean post-MDA levels in CN, ET, and ST were (32.14±11.46, 15.21±8.01, and 22.02±7.33 ng/mL) respectively p=0.001. The mean delta MDA levels in CN, ET, and ST were (1.08±14.83, -16.91±9.68, and -9.34±7.51 ng/mL) respectively p=0.005. The average changes in MDA levels in CN, ET, and ST were (9.09±48.42, -51.71±24.77, and - 27.85±25.31 %) respectively p=0.002. Our findings revealed that both the endurance and strength training interventions resulted in a reduction of oxidative stress, as evidenced by the observed decrease in MDA levels following the training sessions. However, endurance training intervention has a higher effect on suppressing the secretion of oxidative stress than strength training in obese students.
El objetivo de esta investigación es establecer el impacto del entrenamiento de resistencia de intensidad moderada y ejercicios de resistencia en la mitigación del estrés oxidativo en estudiantes con obesidad. La investigación involucró a una cohorte de 30 estudiantes mujeres, caracterizadas por obesidad, con edad promedio de 22,30±1,92 años y índice de masa corporal (IMC) de 31,77±2,72 kg/m2 en promedio. Estos participantes fueron asignados aleatoriamente en tres grupos distintos: el grupo de control (CN, n=10), el grupo sometido a entrenamiento de resistencia (ET, n=10) y el grupo sometido a entrenamiento de fuerza (ST, n=10). . La intervención que implicó entrenamiento de resistencia se ejecutó a un nivel de intensidad del 60-70% FCmáx, y cada sesión de entrenamiento duró entre 40 y 60 minutos. Mientras que el régimen de entrenamiento de fuerza se implementó con una intensidad de carga de 60-70% 1RM, 4-6 series y 12-15 repeticiones para cada serie. La intervención se administró con una regularidad de tres veces por semana durante cuatro semanas. La recopilación de datos se llevó a cabo tomando muestras de sangre antes y 24 horas después de la última intervención; el análisis de los niveles de MDA utilizando la técnica TBAR sirvió como indicador de estrés oxidativo. La técnica empleada para el análisis de los datos fue la prueba ANOVA, luego se continuó con la prueba post hoc LSD con un nivel significativo (p≤0.05). Los resultados mostraron que los niveles promedio pre-MDA en CN, ET y ST fueron (31,07±5,97, 32,12±8,91 y 31,36±8,52 ng/mL) respectivamente p=0,953. Los niveles medios post-MDA en CN, ET y ST fueron (32,14±11,46, 15,21±8,01 y 22,02±7,33 ng/mL) respectivamente p=0,001. Los niveles medios de delta MDA en CN, ET y ST fueron (1,08±14,83, -16,91±9,68 y -9,34±7,51 ng/mL) respectivamente p=0,005. Los cambios promedio en los niveles de MDA en CN, ET y ST fueron (9,09±48,42, -51,71±24,77 y -27,85±25,31 %) respectivamente p=0,002. Nuestros hallazgos revelaron que tanto las intervenciones de entrenamiento de resistencia como de fuerza dieron como resultado una reducción del estrés oxidativo, como lo demuestra la disminución observada en los niveles de MDA después de las sesiones de entrenamiento. Sin embargo, la intervención de entrenamiento de resistencia tiene un mayor efecto en la supresión de la secreción de estrés oxidativo que el entrenamiento de fuerza en estudiantes obesos.

Assessment of the anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and wound-healing effects of methanolic soybean seed extract in an excision wound model in albino rats

Wound healing is a complex physiological process influenced by oxidative stress and inflammation. This study assessed the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and wound-healing effects of a methanolic extract of soybean seeds using a full-thickness excision wound model in male albino rats. Fourteen rats were randomly divided into two groups (n = 7). Under anesthesia, full-thickness skin wounds were aseptically created in the thoraco-abdominal region. Group A received sterile water (placebo) topically, while Group B received the soybean seed extract daily for 21 days. Wound healing was evaluated by macroscopic examination, measurement of wound contraction, and analysis of inflammatory and oxidative stress markers.By day 7, wound contraction was significantly higher in the control group (60.42 ± 6.65%) compared to the extract-treated group (43.96 ± 11.58%) (p < 0.05). No significant difference was observed in the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio between the two groups. However, biochemical analyses showed elevated levels of serum malondialdehyde (MDA) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity in the treated group (MDA: 4.26 ± 0.39 µmol/mg; SOD: 1.43 ± 0.16 mg/mL) versus the control (MDA: 3.18 ± 0.51 µmol/ mg; SOD: 1.01 ± 0.13 mg/mL) (p < 0.05).In conclusion, topical application of soybean seed methanolic extract did not enhance wound healing but improved antioxidant markers, indicating its potential role in mitigating oxidative stress rather than directly accelerating tissue repair. La cicatrización de heridas es un proceso fisiológico complejo influenciado por el estrés oxidativo y la inflamación. Este estudio evaluó los efectos antioxidantes, antiinflamatorios y cicatrizantes de un extracto metanólico de semillas de soya utilizando un modelo de herida por escisión de espesor completo en ratas albinas machos. El Grupo A recibió agua estéril tópica, mientras que el Grupo B fue tratado diariamente con el extracto de semillas de soya durante 21 días. La cicatrización fue evaluada mediante examen macroscópico, medición de la contracción de la herida y análisis de marcadores inflamatorios y de estrés oxidativo.Para el día 7, la contracción de la herida fue significativamente mayor en el grupo control (60.42 ± 6.65%) en comparación con el grupo tratado con el extracto (43.96 ± 11.58%) (p < 0.05). No se observaron diferencias significativas en la relación neutrófilo-linfocito entre los grupos. Sin embargo, los análisis bioquímicos mostraron niveles elevados de malondialdehído (MDA) en suero y actividad de superóxido dismutasa (SOD) en el grupo tratado (MDA: 4.26 ± 0.39 µmol/mg; SOD: 1.43 ± 0.16 mg/mL) frente al control (MDA: 3.18 ± 0.51 µmol/mg; SOD: 1.01 ± 0.13 mg/mL) (p < 0.05).En conclusión, la aplicación tópica del extracto metanólico de semillas de soya no mejoró la cicatrización de heridas, pero sí incrementó los marcadores antioxidantes, lo que sugiere un posible papel terapéutico en la mitigación del estrés oxidativo más que en la aceleración directa de la reparación tisular.

Hen egg carotenoids (lutein and zeaxanthin) and nutritional impacts on human health: a review

Hen egg is a unique and important carrier of lipid soluble bioactive carotenoids - lutein and zeaxanthin. Egg yolk carotenoid profile is largely dependent on hen's feed composition. Naturally, lutein and zeaxanthin are polar carotenoids primarily deposited in human retina and provide several protective functions, i.e. protect the macula from damage by blue light, improve visual acuity, and scavenge harmful reactive oxygen species. They have also been linked with reduced risk of age-related macular degeneration and cataracts, cardiovascular diseases, Alzheimer's, and possibly different cancers. This review summarizes the latest data on content and composition of hen egg carotenoids, effect of processing, feeding systems, feed additives, bioavailability, and physiological effect of egg carotenoids on human health issues.

Oxidative stress parameters in dogs naturally infected with sarcoptic mange

Background: Scabies is one of the most common diseases in dogs. It threatens both animals and humans due to its zoonotic potential. Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the oxidant/antioxidant balance with hematological findings in dogs infested with sarcoptic mange. Methods: The animals evaluated in this study consisted of 32 mixedbreed dogs between 1 and 2 years of age. The dogs were allocated into two groups: a control group (infestationfree animals; n=10), and a sarcoptic mangeinfected group (Sarcoptes, n=22). Dogs in the Sarcoptes group showed infestation signs such as intense itching, excoriations, alopecia, and blistering of the elbow and auricular margins. Results: Significant increase (p<0.01) levels were observed in total oxidant status (TOS), malondialdehyde (MDA), oxidative stress index (OSI), and nitric oxide (NO), while glutathione (GSH) and total antioxidant status (TAS) levels in dogs infested with Sarcoptes decreased significantly (p<0.01). In addition, a significant increase (p<0.01) of WBC count in dogs in the sarcoptic group in comparison with the control was found. Conversely, there was significant decrease (p<0.01) in RBC, HGB, and PCV counts in Sarcoptesinfested dogs. Conclusions: Our study suggests a possible relationship between oxidant/antioxidant imbalance and hematological findings in dogs infested with sarcoptic mange. Furthermore, in addition to MDA, TAS, TOS, and OSI markers, NO as well as GSH might be also used to assess the oxidative stress in dogs naturally infected with Sarcoptes scabiei.
