A novel method is introduced in this work for effectively evaluating the performance of the PANDA type polarization-maintaining fiber Bragg grating (PANDA-FBG) distributed dynamic strain and temperature sensing system. Conventionally, the errors during the measurement are unknown or evaluated by using other sensors such as strain gauge and thermocouples. This will make the sensing system complicated and decrease the efficiency since more than one kind of sensor is applied for the same measurand. In this study, we used the approximately constant ratio of primary errors in strain and temperature measurement and realized the self-evaluation of the sensing system, which can significantly enhance the applicability, as well as the reliability in strategy making.

The additive noise in the condition monitoring system using fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors, including white Gaussian noise and multifrequency interference, has a significantly negative influence on the fault diagnosis of rotating machinery. Spectral subtraction (SS) is an effective method for handling white Gaussian noise. However, the SS method exhibits poor performance in eliminating multifrequency interference because estimating the noise spectrum accurately is difficult, and it significantly weakens the useful information components in measured signals. In this study, an improved spectral subtraction (ISS) method is proposed to enhance its denoising performance. In the ISS method, a reference noise signal measured by the same sensing system without working loads is considered the estimated noise, the same sliding window is used to divide the power spectrums of the measured and reference noise signals into multiple frequency bands, and the formula of spectral subtraction in the standard SS method is modified. A simulation analysis and an experiment are executed by using simulated signals and establishing a vibration test rig based on the FBG sensor, respectively. The statistical results demonstrate the effectiveness and feasibility of the ISS method in simultaneously eliminating white Gaussian noise and multifrequency interference while well maintaining the useful information components.

Sensitivity Distribution Properties of a Phase-Shifted Fiber Bragg Grating Sensor to Ultrasonic Waves
2014
In this research, the sensitivity distribution properties of a phase-shifted fiber Bragg grating (PS-FBG) to ultrasonic waves were investigated employing the surface attachment method. A careful consideration was taken and examined by experimental results to explain that the distances and angles between the sensor and ultrasonic source influence not only the amplitudes, but also the initial phases, waveforms, and spectra of detected signals. Furthermore, factors, including the attachment method and the material’s geometric dimensions, were also discussed. Although these results were obtained based on PS-FBG, they are also applicable to a normal FBG sensor or even an optical fiber sensor, due to the identical physical changes induced by ultrasonic waves in all three. Thus, these results are useful for applications of optical fiber sensors in non-destructive testing and structural health monitoring.

Lithium-ion batteries are widely used in a variety of fields due to their high energy density, high power density, long service life, and environmental friendliness. However, safety accidents with lithium-ion batteries occur frequently. The real-time safety monitoring of lithium-ion batteries is particularly important during their use. The fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors have some additional advantages over conventional electrochemical sensors, such as low invasiveness, electromagnetic anti-interference, and insulating properties. This paper reviews lithium-ion battery safety monitoring based on FBG sensors. The principles and sensing performance of FBG sensors are described. The single-parameter monitoring and dual-parameter monitoring of lithium-ion batteries based on FBG sensors are reviewed. The current application state of the monitored data in lithium-ion batteries is summarized. We also present a brief overview of the recent developments in FBG sensors used in lithium-ion batteries. Finally, we discuss future trends in lithium-ion battery safety monitoring based on FBG sensors.

Plants are primary resources for oxygen and foods whose production is fundamental for our life. However, diseases and pests may interfere with plant growth and cause a significant reduction of both the quality and quantity of agriculture products. Increasing agricultural productivity is crucial for poverty reduction and food security improvements. For this reason, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development gives a central role to agriculture by promoting a strong technological innovation for advancing sustainable practices at the plant level. To accomplish this aim, recently, wearable sensors and flexible electronics have been extended from humans to plants for measuring elongation, microclimate, and stressing factors that may affect the plant’s healthy growth. Unexpectedly, fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs), which are very popular in health monitoring applications ranging from civil infrastructures to the human body, are still overlooked for the agriculture sector. In this work, for the first time, plant wearables based on FBG technology are proposed for the continuous and simultaneous monitoring of plant growth and environmental parameters (i.e., temperature and humidity) in real settings. The promising results demonstrated the feasibility of FBG-based sensors to work in real situations by holding the promise to advance continuous and accurate plant health growth monitoring techniques.

Soft System Based on Fiber Bragg Grating Sensor for Loss of Resistance Detection during Epidural Procedures: In Silico and In Vivo Assessment
2021
Epidural analgesia represents a clinical common practice aiming at pain mitigation. This loco-regional technique is widely used in several applications such as labor, surgery and lower back pain. It involves the injections of anesthetics or analgesics into the epidural space (ES). The ES detection is still demanding and is usually performed by the techniques named loss of resistance (LOR). In this study, we propose a novel soft system (SS) based on one fiber Bragg grating sensor (FBG) embedded in a soft polymeric matrix for LOR detection during the epidural puncture. The SS was designed to allow instrumenting the syringe’s plunger without relevant modifications of the anesthetist’s sensations during the procedure. After the metrological characterization of the SS, we assessed the capability of this solution in detecting LOR by carrying it out in silico and in clinical settings. For both trials, results revealed the capability of the proposed solutions in detecting the LOR and then in recording the force exerted on the plunger.

Joints between diaphragm wall panels are weak spots in wall construction. It is essential that potential leak sites are detected prior to excavation. In this study, a novel leak detection and monitoring system is presented that is based on fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensing technology. A field study was performed in a deep excavation supported by diaphragm walls (in Hohhot, China) to validate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method. Two schemes were trialed; one using pipes made of stainless steel, and one used a pipeless method. The results of the field study are presented and discussed. They show that potential leak sites in the wall joints could be determined prior to excavation using the proposed detection method. Stainless steel is a good material to use to make the detection tube because it can protect the FBG sensors and heating belts from damage and is more sensitive to water leakage. The field study provides good evidence for the feasibility of the new detection system. It also provides valuable experience for the field application of the system and has generated useful data to use in follow-up work.

An addressed fiber Bragg structure (AFBS) is a special type of fiber Bragg grating simultaneously performing the functions of a two-frequency radiation shaper and a sensitive element. An AFBS forms a two-frequency optical spectral response at its output, the difference frequency of which is invariant to measured physical fields and is referred to as the address frequency of the AFBS. Each of the AFBSs in the system has its own address frequency; therefore, a number of such structures can be interrogated simultaneously enabling the addressed multiplexing. In this article, we provide an overview of the theory and technology of AFBS, including the structures with three or more spectral components with various combinations of difference frequencies, both symmetrical and asymmetric. The subjects of interrogation of AFBSs, their fabrication and calibration are discussed as well. We also consider a wide range of applications in which AFBS can be used, covering such areas as oil and gas production, power engineering, transport, medicine, etc. In addition, the prospects for the further development of AFBS are proposed that mitigate the shortcomings of the current AFBSs’ state of the art and open up new possibilities of their application.

Enhanced Low-Energy Impact Localization for Carbon-Fiber Honeycomb Sandwich Panels Using LightGBM
2025
Low-energy impacts have been demonstrated to cause damage and failure in aircraft structures, thereby affecting the structural load-bearing performance and creating safety hazards. In this study, an innovative damage-monitoring method based on a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is proposed for honeycomb sandwich composites. The proposed method is applicable to honeycomb sandwich composites and integrates a light gradient boosting machine (LightGBM)-optimized impact localization method with feature-parallel and data-parallel processing in the machine learning architecture. An impact localization algorithm is applied to honeycomb sandwich composites using an array of multiplexed FBG sensors. The proposed algorithm exhibited substantial localization accuracy. The LightGBM method was employed to identify the optimal branching points for impact localization in real time, addressing the low-accuracy challenge in localizing low-energy impacts on the board structure when the fiber grating sensing system operates at a high sampling frequency.
