Towards innovative work behavior through knowledge management infrastructure capabilities

PurposeThis study proposed a model based on knowledge management infrastructure capabilities (KMICs) to explore that how functional flexibility (FF) and knowledge sharing (KS) plays a mediating role between KMIC and innovative work behavior (IWB) among production-line workers.Design/methodology/approachData were collected from 894 workers through self-administered questionnaires from manufacturing businesses. The outcomes of the study revealed that KMIC has a significant and positive relationship with IWB. Second, FF and KS fully mediate between KMIC and IWB. Finally, the moderating role of KS between KMIC and FF was also supported by this study.FindingsThis study offers the empirical evidence on how to flourish the mechanism of FF and KS in manufacturing concerns. Additionally, some facts are also highlighted by this study that should be eloquent options for HR managers to understand the nexus of KMIC, KS and FF for enhancing the IWB among production-line workers. Moreover, this study contributed to noteworthy inferences for management by focusing on KMIC as a fundamental organizational level factor for IWB via KS and FF.Originality/valueThis is the first study in the which emphasis on KMIC for explaining IWB through employee FF and KS in settings such as manufacturing concern where the implementation of new working methods is necessary.

Dissociable plasticity of visual-motor system in functional specialization and flexibility in expert table tennis players

Specialization and flexibility are two basic attributes of functional brain organization, enabling efficient cognition and behavior. However, it is largely unknown what plastic changes in specialization and flexibility in visual-motor areas occur in support of extraordinary motor skills in expert athletes and how the selective adaptability of the visual-motor system affects general perceptual or cognitive domains. Here, we used a dynamic network framework to investigate intrinsic functional specialization and flexibility of visual-motor system in expert table tennis players (TTP). Our results showed that sensorimotor areas increased intrinsic functional flexibility, whereas visual areas increased intrinsic functional specialization in expert TTP compared to nonathletes. Moreover, the flexibility of the left putamen was positively correlated with skill level, and that of the left lingual gyrus was positively correlated with behavioral accuracy of a sport-unrelated attention task. This study has uncovered dissociable plasticity of the visual-motor system and their predictions of individual differences in skill level and general attention processing. Furthermore, our time-resolved analytic approach is applicable across other professional athletes for understanding their brain plasticity and superior behavior.

PurposeThis study aims to investigate the direct impact of knowledge sharing (KS) and functional flexibility (FF) on innovative work behavior (IWB) of small medium enterprises (SME’s) employees. This study also observes the mediating role of FF in the connection between KS and IWB.Design/methodology/approachThis study adapted a quantitative methodology and used the cross-sectional data. Data were collected from the 751 workers of SMEs to validate the mediation model.FindingsResults reveal that KS and FF significantly affect IWB in SME’s workers. The findings also reveal that FF acts as a mediator between KS and IWB link.Originality/valueThe live experience of currently working employees shows that IWB is dependent of employees' KS and FF. Moreover, this study contributed to the streams of knowledge management and organizational innovation perspective by emphasizing upon the mediating mechanism of FF.

Furthermore, correlation and structural equation modeling approach was used for the analysis of collected data.FindingsThe findings revealed that KS has a significant positive relationship with IWB. Second, FF and PE fully mediate between KS and IWB.Originality/valueThis study offers empirical evidence how to flourish a mechanism of IWB among employees in SMEs. Furthermore, this study highlighted some facts that should be meaningful options for human resource managers to understand the nexus of KS, FF and PE for enhancing the IWB among workers in SMEs. Moreover, the study in hand provided significant implications for management by focusing on KS as a fundamental predictor for IWB via FF and PE.

The study of fish digestive biochemistry is essential to understand factors that affect the net efficiency of food transformation and growth, and therefore aquaculture profitability. The aim of the present study was to assess the activity and functional characteristics of key digestive enzymes in juveniles of greater amberjack (Seriola dumerili), as well as the possible modulation of their relative importance by water temperature. For that, a combination of biochemical assays and substrate-SDS-PAGE were used. Under physiological conditions pepsin activity was negligible. Chymotrypsin was the most active enzyme in the digestive tract of the greater amberjack, while lipase was the enzyme with lower activity, though both enzymes in addition to trypsin were responsive to water temperature as revealed by discriminant analysis. Seriola dumerili showed to have pH-sensitive and, except for chymotrypsin, thermally robust proteases. Inhibition assays showed the major importance of serine proteases and revealed inverse trypsin and chymotrypsin responses to environmental temperature, with higher trypsin contribution in 26°C-fish while higher chymotrypsin contribution in 18°C-fish. Zymograms revealed three isotrypsin and three isochymotrypsin enzymes, with no variation in the presence of particular isoforms among rearing temperatures. However, they confirmed the role of chymotrypsin activity in providing digestive plasticity, with one of the isoforms being more active at lower temperatures. Thus, results indicate that variation in the relative contribution of chymotrypsin isoenzymes to a particular environmental temperature occurs due to different physic-chemical features of isoforms as a source of functional flexibility. This study assessed for the first time the effects of rearing temperature on greater amberjack digestive enzymes, increasing the knowledge on its digestive biochemistry, and aiding in the improvement of management practices for this species industrialization.

High-involvement HRM practices and innovative work behavior among production-line workers: mediating role of employee's functional flexibility

PurposeFollowing “AMO” framework and resource-based theory (RBT), the current study empirically examines the relationships between high-involvement human resource management (HI HRM) practices, employee functional flexibility (FF) and innovative work behavior (IWB). Furthermore, the mediating effect of FF has also been tested.Design/methodology/approachDescriptive statistics, correlation, hierarchical regression analysis, baron and Kenny, PROCESS Macro and Sobel Test approach were used on a sample of 894 employees of manufacturing concerns.FindingsFindings revealed a direct effect of HI HRM practices on FF and IWB. In addition, the results confirm that FF positively mediates between HI HRM practices and IWB. Furthermore, three dimensions of HI HRM practices, i.e. ability-enhancing (AE), motivation-enhancing (ME) and opportunity-enhancing (OE) HRM practices also predicted FF and IWB.Practical implicationsThis study not only offers the empirical evidence to validate the findings of past researchers, but also provide insight how HI HRM practices flourish the mechanism of FF in manufacturing concerns. Furthermore, this study highlighted some interesting facts that should be meaningful options for HR managers to enhance the level of employees' FF and IWB.Originality/valueAlthough the empirical evidence is well established that HI HRM practices have a substantial contribution for organizational performance, however, there is lack of studies that empirically examine the associations among HI HRM practices, employee's competencies and behaviors, as well as the mechanism through which HI HRM practices affect work related innovative behavior. Finally, in distinguishing from the past studies, this study explores HI HRM practices as an important predictor of FF in addressing the IWB.

With the beginning of the emergence of modernity, the concept of functional flexibility emerged from the perspective of the possibility of modification and fragmentation within the internal spaces exclusively by adopting the principle of the structural network in its projects. Adapting spaces to everything that is new today can match technological progress within the levels of form, mass and space, and thus architectural schools and government gave institutions the flexibility in the importance of evaluating and criticizing architectural designs in the stages of architecture and competitions. The mechanisms, objectives and results that have been implemented are still unclear, by adopting the goal of flexibility in architecture, as an organized characteristic that stems from the basis of thought that influences in one way or another the nature of the utilitarian relationship. To evaluate projects and find a better alternative, commensurate with time, to the space infrastructure capable of adapting to different conditions). Accordingly, a set of previous studies and examples were analyzed by adopting functional flexibility as a criticism mechanism, and a set of evaluation strategies and characteristics were identified, and the criteria used in such type of projects that need to be expanded in the future were determined. The tool has been tested in a range of projects. It is chosen for each level of flexibility (flexibility at the internal level without change or addition in the main building block, in addition to the building blocks with the intent of functional expansion and at the level of functional change used by the entire building). In addition to the influence of block shape (geometric, organic, crumbly blocks) with functional flexibility, to derive important recommendations for the designer and evaluator.

The impact of the use of employee functional flexibility on patient safety

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to examine the effect of the use of unit-level functional flexibility on one particular patient outcome, unit-acquired pressure ulcers, and the potential moderating influences of coworker support and workload.Design/methodology/approachThis study uses an archival approach, examining data from 68 hospital units.FindingsThe results indicate that a unit's higher use of functionally flexible nurses in one-quarter was associated with a higher number of pressure ulcers among the unit's patients the following quarter. This detrimental effect was significantly diminished when coworker support within the unit was high. Unit-level nurse workload did not have any moderating influence.Research limitations/implicationsOne of the scholarly contributions of this study is that it links greater use of functionally flexible employees to a negative patient safety outcome at the unit level. As most of the variables used in the study were archival measures, future research could examine the replicability of these findings using other indicators and measures.Practical implicationsBeyond healthcare settings, the results prompt managers in industries where there has been growing use of functional flexibility (e.g., banking) to think about the associated unintended negative consequences. That said, the results also point to coworker instrumental support as a means by which to mitigate negative outcomes.Originality/valueAlthough functional flexibility has been shown to positively correlate with a number of organizational performance indicators, this is one of the very few studies that has examined its negative consequences, particularly on patient safety.

Brain Map of Intrinsic Functional Flexibility in Anesthetized Monkeys and Awake Humans

Emerging neuroimaging studies emphasize the dynamic organization of spontaneous brain activity in both human and non-human primates, even under anesthesia. In a recent study, we were able to characterize the heterogeneous architecture of intrinsic functional flexibility in the awake, resting human brain using time-resolved analysis and a probabilistic model. However, it is unknown whether this organizational principle is preserved in the anesthetized monkey brain, and how anesthesia affects dynamic and static measurements of spontaneous brain activity. To investigate these issues, we collected resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) datasets from 178 awake humans and 11 anesthetized monkeys (all healthy). Our recently established method, a complexity measurement (i.e., Shannon entropy) of dynamic functional connectivity patterns of each brain region, was used to map the intrinsic functional flexibility across the cerebral cortex. To further explore the potential effects of anesthesia, we performed time series analysis and correlation analysis between dynamic and static measurements within awake human and anesthetized monkey brains, respectively. We observed a heterogeneous profile of intrinsic functional flexibility in the anesthetized monkey brain, which showed some similarities to that of awake humans (
= 0.30,
= 0.007). However, we found that brain activity in anesthetized monkeys generally shifted toward random fluctuations. Moreover, there is a negative correlation between nodal entropy for the distribution of dynamic functional connectivity patterns and static functional connectivity strength in anesthetized monkeys, but not in awake humans. Our findings indicate that the heterogeneous architecture of intrinsic functional flexibility across cortex probably reflects an evolutionarily conserved aspect of functional brain organization, which persists across levels of cognitive processing (states of consciousness). The coupling between nodal entropy for the distribution of dynamic functional connectivity patterns and static functional connectivity strength may serve as a potential signature of anesthesia. This study not only offers fresh insight into the evolution of brain functional architecture, but also advances our understanding of the dynamics of spontaneous brain activity.
