Recently, the dangers associated with face generation technology have been attracting much attention in image processing and forensic science. The current face anti-spoofing methods based on Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) suffer from defects such as overfitting and generalization problems. This paper proposes a new generation method using a one-class classification model to judge the authenticity of facial images for the purpose of realizing a method to generate a model that is as compatible as possible with other datasets and new data, rather than strongly depending on the dataset used for training. The method proposed in this paper has the following features: (a) we adopted various filter enhancement methods as basic pseudo-image generation methods for data enhancement; (b) an improved Multi-Channel Convolutional Neural Network (MCCNN) was adopted as the main network, making it possible to accept multiple preprocessed data individually, obtain feature maps, and extract attention maps; (c) as a first ingenuity in training the main network, we augmented the data using weakly supervised learning methods to add attention cropping and dropping to the data; (d) as a second ingenuity in training the main network, we trained it in two steps. In the first step, we used a binary classification loss function to ensure that known fake facial features generated by known GAN networks were filtered out. In the second step, we used a one-class classification loss function to deal with the various types of GAN networks or unknown fake face generation methods. We compared our proposed method with four recent methods. Our experiments demonstrate that the proposed method improves cross-domain detection efficiency while maintaining source-domain accuracy. These studies show one possible direction for improving the correct answer rate in judging facial image authenticity, thereby making a great contribution both academically and practically.

A Deep Learning-Based Approach to Generating Comprehensive Building Façades for Low-Rise Housing
2023
In recent years, as machine learning has been widely studied in the field of architecture, scholars have demonstrated that computers can be used to learn the graphical features of building façade generation. However, existing deep learning in façade generation has yet to generate only a single façade, without comprehensive generation of five façades including the roof. Moreover, most of the existing literature has utilized the Pix2Pix algorithm for façade generation experiments, failing to attempt to replace the original generator in Pix2Pix with a different generator for experiments. This study addresses the above issues by collecting and filtering entries from the international Solar Decathlon (SD competition) to obtain a data set. Subsequently, a low-rise residential building façade generation model based on the Pix2Pix neural network was constructed for training and testing. At the same time, the original U-net generator in Pix2Pix was replaced with three different generators, U-net++, HRNet and AttU-net, for training and test results were obtained. The results were evaluated from both subjective and objective aspects and it was found that the AttU-net generative network showed the best comprehensive generation performance for such façades. HRNet is acceptable if there is a need for fast training and generation

Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) plays a critical role in cancer screening but faces challenges in signal clarity and manual intervention. This study aims to enhance FISH signal clarity, improve screening efficiency, and reduce false negatives through an automated image acquisition and signal enhancement framework.
Methods
An automated workflow was developed, integrating a dynamic signal enhancement method that optimizes global and local features. An improved Cycle-GAN network was introduced, incorporating residual connections and layer-wise supervision to accurately model and compensate for complex signal characteristics. Key metrics such as signal brightness, edge gradients, contrast improvement index (CII), and structural similarity index (SSIM) were used to evaluate performance.
Results
The proposed method increased weak signal brightness by 49.02%, edge gradients by 48.61%, and CII by 32.52%. The SSIM reached 0.996, indicating high fidelity to original signals.
Conclusion
Visual analysis demonstrated clearer, more continuous, and uniform fluorescence signals, effectively mitigating fragmentation and uneven distribution. These improvements reduced false negatives and enhanced genomic abnormality detection accuracy. The proposed method significantly improves FISH signal clarity and stability, providing reliable support for cancer screening, genomic abnormality detection, molecular typing, prognosis evaluation, and targeted treatment planning.

Design of de novo synthetic regulatory DNA is a promising avenue to control gene expression in biotechnology and medicine. Using mutagenesis typically requires screening sizable random DNA libraries, which limits the designs to span merely a short section of the promoter and restricts their control of gene expression. Here, we prototype a deep learning strategy based on generative adversarial networks (GAN) by learning directly from genomic and transcriptomic data. Our ExpressionGAN can traverse the entire regulatory sequence-expression landscape in a gene-specific manner, generating regulatory DNA with prespecified target mRNA levels spanning the whole gene regulatory structure including coding and adjacent non-coding regions. Despite high sequence divergence from natural DNA, in vivo measurements show that 57% of the highly-expressed synthetic sequences surpass the expression levels of highly-expressed natural controls. This demonstrates the applicability and relevance of deep generative design to expand our knowledge and control of gene expression regulation in any desired organism, condition or tissue.

2020
Recently, researchers have been studying methods to introduce deep learning into automated optical inspection (AOI) systems to reduce labor costs. However, the integration of deep learning in the industry may encounter major challenges such as sample imbalance (defective products that only account for a small proportion). Therefore, in this study, an anomaly detection neural network, dual auto-encoder generative adversarial network (DAGAN), was developed to solve the problem of sample imbalance. With skip-connection and dual auto-encoder architecture, the proposed method exhibited excellent image reconstruction ability and training stability. Three datasets, namely public industrial detection training set, MVTec AD, with mobile phone screen glass and wood defect detection datasets, were used to verify the inspection ability of DAGAN. In addition, training with a limited amount of data was proposed to verify its detection ability. The results demonstrated that the areas under the curve (AUCs) of DAGAN were better than previous generative adversarial network-based anomaly detection models in 13 out of 17 categories in these datasets, especially in categories with high variability or noise. The maximum AUC improvement was 0.250 (toothbrush). Moreover, the proposed method exhibited better detection ability than the U-Net auto-encoder, which indicates the function of discriminator in this application. Furthermore, the proposed method had a high level of AUCs when using only a small amount of training data. DAGAN can significantly reduce the time and cost of collecting and labeling data when it is applied to industrial detection.

Drones are becoming increasingly popular not only for recreational purposes but in day-to-day applications in engineering, medicine, logistics, security and others. In addition to their useful applications, an alarming concern in regard to the physical infrastructure security, safety and privacy has arisen due to the potential of their use in malicious activities. To address this problem, we propose a novel solution that automates the drone detection and identification processes using a drone’s acoustic features with different deep learning algorithms. However, the lack of acoustic drone datasets hinders the ability to implement an effective solution. In this paper, we aim to fill this gap by introducing a hybrid drone acoustic dataset composed of recorded drone audio clips and artificially generated drone audio samples using a state-of-the-art deep learning technique known as the Generative Adversarial Network. Furthermore, we examine the effectiveness of using drone audio with different deep learning algorithms, namely, the Convolutional Neural Network, the Recurrent Neural Network and the Convolutional Recurrent Neural Network in drone detection and identification. Moreover, we investigate the impact of our proposed hybrid dataset in drone detection. Our findings prove the advantage of using deep learning techniques for drone detection and identification while confirming our hypothesis on the benefits of using the Generative Adversarial Networks to generate real-like drone audio clips with an aim of enhancing the detection of new and unfamiliar drones.

In recent years, deep learning has garnered tremendous success in a variety of application domains. This new field of machine learning has been growing rapidly and has been applied to most traditional application domains, as well as some new areas that present more opportunities. Different methods have been proposed based on different categories of learning, including supervised, semi-supervised, and un-supervised learning. Experimental results show state-of-the-art performance using deep learning when compared to traditional machine learning approaches in the fields of image processing, computer vision, speech recognition, machine translation, art, medical imaging, medical information processing, robotics and control, bioinformatics, natural language processing, cybersecurity, and many others. This survey presents a brief survey on the advances that have occurred in the area of Deep Learning (DL), starting with the Deep Neural Network (DNN). The survey goes on to cover Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), Recurrent Neural Network (RNN), including Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) and Gated Recurrent Units (GRU), Auto-Encoder (AE), Deep Belief Network (DBN), Generative Adversarial Network (GAN), and Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL). Additionally, we have discussed recent developments, such as advanced variant DL techniques based on these DL approaches. This work considers most of the papers published after 2012 from when the history of deep learning began. Furthermore, DL approaches that have been explored and evaluated in different application domains are also included in this survey. We also included recently developed frameworks, SDKs, and benchmark datasets that are used for implementing and evaluating deep learning approaches. There are some surveys that have been published on DL using neural networks and a survey on Reinforcement Learning (RL). However, those papers have not discussed individual advanced techniques for training large-scale deep learning models and the recently developed method of generative models.

Fatigued driving is one of the main causes of traffic accidents. The electroencephalogram (EEG)-based mental state analysis method is an effective and objective way of detecting fatigue. However, as EEG shows significant differences across subjects, effectively “transfering” the EEG analysis model of the existing subjects to the EEG signals of other subjects is still a challenge. Domain-Adversarial Neural Network (DANN) has excellent performance in transfer learning, especially in the fields of document analysis and image recognition, but has not been applied directly in EEG-based cross-subject fatigue detection. In this paper, we present a DANN-based model, Generative-DANN (GDANN), which combines Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) to enhance the ability by addressing the issue of different distribution of EEG across subjects. The comparative results show that in the analysis of cross-subject tasks, GDANN has a higher average accuracy of 91.63% in fatigue detection across subjects than those of traditional classification models, which is expected to have much broader application prospects in practical brain–computer interaction (BCI).

Fault diagnosis method for railway wagon bearings under imbalanced dataset based on improved ACWGAN
2025
Railway Wagon bearing fault diagnosis often encounters the challenge of data imbalance, with scarce fault data making it difficult to train efficient and reliable diagnostic models. To address this, Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) have been introduced to generate high-quality synthetic fault data, balancing the dataset. However, traditional GANs face training difficulties, resulting in imbalanced dynamics between the discriminator and generator and lower-quality generated data. This paper proposes improvements to Auxiliary Classifier Generative Adversarial Networks (ACGAN) to overcome these challenges. The enhancements include integrating a multi-level sampling attention module into the generator to enhance its capacity, introducing the Wasserstein distance as the loss function to improve stability and sample quality, employing spectral normalization to control gradient magnitude, and implementing a gradient penalty strategy to further enhance network stability. Comparative analyses with other GAN variants demonstrate the improved model's superior stability and effective adversarial dynamics. Evaluation metrics confirm the enhanced model's significantly better generation quality. Fault diagnosis on augmented balanced datasets reveals that the proposed model achieves the best diagnostic performance among various models. Additionally, the effect of adding false data on diagnostic accuracy was investigated, showing a positive correlation between the number of samples and diagnostic accuracy. This research offers an effective solution for addressing data imbalance in railway Wagon bearing fault diagnosis.
