Targeting ferroptosis unveils a new era for traditional Chinese medicine: a scientific metrology study

In the past 11 years, there has been a surge in studies exploring the regulatory effect of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) on ferroptosis. However, a significant gap persists in comprehensive scientometric analysis and scientific mapping research, especially in tracking the evolution, primary contributors, and emerging research focal points. This study aims to comprehensively update the advancements in targeting ferroptosis with various TCMs during the previous 11 years. The data, covering the period from 1 January 2012, to 30 November 2023, were retrieved from the Web of Science database. For in-depth scientometric and visualized analyses, a series of advanced analytical instruments were employed. The findings highlight China’s predominant role, accounting for 71.99% of total publications and significantly shaping research in this domain. Noteworthy productivity was observed at various institutions, including Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine, Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Zhejiang University. Thomas Efferth emerged as the foremost author within this field, while Frontiers in Pharmacology boasted the highest publication count. This study pinpointed hepatocellular carcinoma, chemical and drug-induced liver injury, mitochondrial diseases, acute kidney injury, and liver failure as the most critical disorders addressed in this research realm. The research offers a comprehensive bibliometric evaluation, enhancing our understanding of the present status of TCM therapy in managing ferroptosis-related diseases. Consequently, it aids both seasoned researchers and newcomers by accelerating access to vital information and fostering innovative concept extraction within this specialized field.

Zooming in and Out of Programmed Cell Death in Osteoarthritis: A Scientometric and Visualized Analysis

During the past decade, mounting evidence has increasingly linked programmed cell death (PCD) to the progression and development of osteoarthritis (OA). There is a significant need for a thorough scientometric analysis that recapitulates the relationship between PCD and OA. This study aimed to collect articles and reviews focusing on PCD in OA, extracting data from January 1st, 2013, to October 31st, 2023, using the Web of Science. Various tools, including VOSviewer, CiteSpace, Pajek, Scimago Graphica, and the R package, were employed for scientometric and visualization analyses. Notably, China, the USA, and South Korea emerged as major contributors, collectively responsible for more than 85% of published papers and significantly influencing research in this field. Among different institutions, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Xi'an Jiao Tong University, and Zhejiang University exhibited the highest productivity. Prolific authors included Wang Wei, Wang Jing, and Zhang Li.

Keywords related to PCD in OA prominently highlighted 'chondrocytes', 'inflammation', and 'oxidative stress', recognized as pivotal mechanisms contributing to PCD within OA. A Scientometric Worldview of Artificial Intelligence in Musculoskeletal Diseases Since the 21st Century

Over the past 24 years, significant advancements have been made in applying artificial intelligence (AI) to musculoskeletal (MSK) diseases. However, there is a lack of analytical and descriptive investigations on the trajectory, essential research directions, current research scenario, pivotal focuses, and future perspectives. This research aims to provide a thorough update on the progress in AI for MSK diseases over the last 24 years.
Data from the Web of Science database, covering January 1, 2000, to March 1, 2024, was analyzed. Using advanced analytical tools, we conducted comprehensive scientometric and visual analyses.
The findings highlight the predominant influence of the USA, which accounts for 28.53% of the total publications and plays a key role in shaping research in this field. Notable productivity was seen at institutions such as the University of California, San Francisco, Harvard Medical School, and Seoul National University. Valentina Pedoia is identified as the most prolific contributor.

New GEONET analysis strategy at GSI: daily coordinates of over 1300 GNSS CORS in Japan throughout the last quarter century

The station coordinates derived from GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) with a conventional static method underpin the study of Earth and planetary science and surveying and mapping. For the continuous provision of high-quality coordinates, it is mandatory to cope with the increasing deviation from the global standard reference frame and the launch of modern GPS (Global Positioning System) satellites. To provide coordinates agreed with ITRF2014 (International Terrestrial Reference Frame 2014) at several millimeters for GEONET (GNSS Earth Observation Network System) in Japan, we developed a new analysis strategy named F5 and assessed the reprocessed station coordinates from 1996. The major updates in F5 can be summarized as incorporating global network processing and enhancements in troposphere modeling. As for the troposphere enhancements, a modern mapping function VMF1 (Vienna Mapping Functions 1) was employed and time intervals for troposphere estimates were shortened. Station coordinates in the global network showed a great agreement with ITRF2014 at several millimeters in the recent 20 years and comparable or slightly better performance with IGS (International GNSS Services) Analysis Centers. The RMS (root mean square) averaged over all GEONET stations indicated very high accuracy of 3.2 mm (horizontal) and 7.3 mm (vertical); the latter accounts for an improvement of roughly 10% from the previous strategy. Sensitivity tests about troposphere estimates revealed that the reduced RMS was completely due to the short time intervals, not the use of VMF1, which contributed to partly suppressing the spurious vertical annual deformation. These results confirm that F5 is sufficiently accurate for the requirements of individual applications and infer the capability of detecting smaller signals the previous strategy could not resolve.

Agricultural ecological compensation has drawn an increasingly broad range of interest since early 1990s. In recent years, the volume of the literature grows rapidly. As a result, a systematic review of the diverse research field and its current trends becomes essential. This paper surveys the literature of agricultural ecological compensation between 1990 and 2016. Specifically, by employing CiteSpace information visualization software, we firstly identified the research hotspots and evolution path and then illustrated the frontier and developing trend of the domain in core and broader perspectives. It is found that the focus of the academic community has always been researches on the theoretical policy and application of the payment for agro-ecosystem services, agricultural ecological compensation based on contingent valuation method, and ecological compensation of farmland landscape and organic food production as well as willingness to accept/pay for land use and ecological protection. Meanwhile, we also found that, in recent years, qualitative research has received more and more attention in the field of agricultural ecological compensation, since global warming, agricultural carbon emissions, and other emerging environmental issues have aroused widespread concern of the people around the world. Moreover, we believed that more and more scholars will employ case study methodology to analyze agricultural ecological compensation in specific systems, regions, or circumstances in the future.

Coral reefs are subjected globally to a variety of natural and anthropogenic stressors that often act synergistically. Today, reversing ongoing and future coral reef degradation presents significant challenges and countering this negative trend will take considerable efforts and investments. Scientific knowledge can inform and guide the requisite decision-making process and offer practical solutions to the problem of protection as the effects of climate change exacerbate. However, implementation of solutions presently lags far behind the pace required to reverse global declines, and there is a need for an urgent and significant step-up in the extent and range of strategies being implemented. In this paper, we consider scientific frontiers in natural and social science research that can help build stronger support for reef management and improve the efficacy of interventions. We cover various areas including: (1) enhancing the case for reef conservation and management, (2) dealing with local stressors on reefs, (3) addressing global climate change impacts, (4) and reviewing various approaches to the governance of coral reefs. In sum, we consider scientific frontiers in natural and social science that will require further attention in coming years as managers’ work towards building stronger support for reef management and improve the efficacy of local interventions.

Closing the gap in education and technology

This report focuses not only on the gaps facing Latin America in both education and technology, but especially on the interactions between the two. The central premise of the report is that skills and technology interact in important ways, and this relationship is a fundamental reason for the large observed differences in productivity and incomes across countries. This report argues that skills upgrading technological change, and their interaction are major factors behind total factor productivity growth. Skill-biased technological change is indeed being transferred today at faster speeds to LAC countries, as elsewhere. Technological change has been complementary with skill levels in Latin America in the last two decades. It is further estimated that firms have substantially increased the demand for educated workers in the region, particularly workers with tertiary education. This technological transformation appears to be intimately related to patterns of integration in the world economy. Firms in sectors with higher exposure to trade are subject to more competitive pressures. Adopting and adapting more advanced technologies and hiring and training more educated workers is one way to respond to this pressure to become more productive. The increased potential demand for education offers the possibility to accelerate productivity growth in the economy by closing the educational and technological gaps that Latin American countries exhibit with respect to their peers.
