Covid-19 Imaging Tools: How Big Data is Big?
In this paper, considering year 2020 and Covid-19, we analyze medical imaging tools and their performance scores in accordance with the dataset size and their complexity. For this, we mainly consider AI-driven tools that employ two different types of image data, namely chest Computed Tomography (CT) and X-ray. We elaborate on their strengths and weaknesses by taking the following important factors into account: i) dataset size; ii) model fitting criteria (over-fitting and under-fitting); iii) transfer learning in the deep learning era; and iv) data augmentation. Medical imaging tools do not explicitly analyze model fitting. Also, using transfer learning, with fewer data, one could possibly build Covid-19 deep learning model but they are limited to education and training. We observe that, in both image modalities, neither the dataset size nor does data augmentation work well for Covid-19 screening purposes because a large dataset does not guarantee all possible Covid-19 manifestations and data augmentation does not create new Covid-19 cases.
Neuromarketing research in the last five years: A bibliometric analysis
Neuromarketing (NM) is an application of neuroimaging and physiological tools to record the neural correlates of consumers' behaviour (e.g., decision-making, emotion, attention, and memory) toward marketing stimuli such as brands and advertisements. This study aims to present the current tools employed in the empirical research in the last five years. In this article, we have followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) framework and a bibliometric analysis to select empirical and review papers that used NM tools in the last five years. We have extracted and analysed twenty-four documents from the Scopus database to answer our study questions. We found that electroencephalography (EEG) is the most popular neuroimaging tool in neuromarketing research, wherein has been used almost thirteen times. Followed by eye-tracking (ET) and galvanic skin response (GSR) as the most physiological tools, wherein have been applied almost four times for each tool. We hope that this study provides valuable insights into the common NM tools used in marketing research.
Neuroimaging Techniques in Advertising Research: Main Applications, Development, and Brain Regions and Processes
Despite the advancement in neuroimaging tools, studies about using neuroimaging tools to study the impact of advertising on brain regions and processes are scant and remain unclear in academic literature. In this article, we have followed a literature review methodology and a bibliometric analysis to select empirical and review papers that employed neuroimaging tools in advertising campaigns and to understand the global research trends in the neuromarketing domain. We extracted and analyzed sixty-three articles from the Web of Science database to answer our study questions. We found four common neuroimaging techniques employed in advertising research. We also found that the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), the ventromedial prefrontal cortex, and the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex play a vital role in decision-making processes. The OFC is linked to positive valence, and the lateral OFC and left dorsal anterior insula related in negative valence. In addition, the thalamus and primary visual area associated with the bottom-up attention system, whereas the top-down attention system connected to the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, parietal cortex, and primary visual areas. For memory, the hippocampus is responsible for generating and processing memories. We hope that this study provides valuable insights about the main brain regions and processes of interest for advertising.
Imaging and Genetic Tools for the Investigation of the Endocannabinoid System in the CNS
As central nervous system (CNS)-related disorders present an increasing cause of global morbidity, mortality, and high pressure on our healthcare system, there is an urgent need for new insights and treatment options. The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a critical network of endogenous compounds, receptors, and enzymes that contribute to CNS development and regulation. Given its multifaceted involvement in neurobiology and its significance in various CNS disorders, the ECS as a whole is considered a promising therapeutic target. Despite significant advances in our understanding of the ECS’s role in the CNS, its complex architecture and extensive crosstalk with other biological systems present challenges for research and clinical advancements. To bridge these knowledge gaps and unlock the full therapeutic potential of ECS interventions in CNS-related disorders, a plethora of molecular–genetic tools have been developed in recent years. Here, we review some of the most impactful tools for investigating the neurological aspects of the ECS. We first provide a brief introduction to the ECS components, including cannabinoid receptors, endocannabinoids, and metabolic enzymes, emphasizing their complexity. This is followed by an exploration of cutting-edge imaging tools and genetic models aimed at elucidating the roles of these principal ECS components. Special emphasis is placed on their relevance in the context of CNS and its associated disorders.
Consumer Neuroscience Techniques in Advertising Research: A Bibliometric Citation Analysis
The limitations of self-report techniques (i.e., questionnaires or surveys) in measuring consumer response to advertising stimuli have necessitated more objective and accurate tools from the fields of neuroscience and psychology for the study of consumer behavior, resulting in the creation of consumer neuroscience. This recent marketing sub-field stems from a wide range of disciplines and applies multiple types of techniques to diverse advertising subdomains (e.g., advertising constructs, media elements, or prediction strategies). Due to its complex nature and continuous growth, this area of research calls for a clear understanding of its evolution, current scope, and potential domains in the field of advertising. Thus, this current research is among the first to apply a bibliometric approach to clarify the main research streams analyzing advertising persuasion using neuroimaging. Particularly, this paper combines a comprehensive review with performance analysis tools of 203 papers published between 1986 and 2019 in outlets indexed by the ISI Web of Science database. Our findings describe the research tools, journals, and themes that are worth considering in future research. The current study also provides an agenda for future research and therefore constitutes a starting point for advertising academics and professionals intending to use neuroimaging techniques.
Application of In Vivo Imaging Techniques and Diagnostic Tools in Oral Drug Delivery Research
Drug absorption following oral administration is determined by complex and dynamic interactions between gastrointestinal (GI) physiology, the drug, and its formulation. Since many of these interactions are not fully understood, the COST action on “Understanding Gastrointestinal Absorption-related Processes (UNGAP)” was initiated in 2017, with the aim to improve the current comprehension of intestinal drug absorption and foster future developments in this field. In this regard, in vivo techniques used for the characterization of human GI physiology and the intraluminal behavior of orally administered dosage forms in the GI tract are fundamental to gaining deeper mechanistic understanding of the interplay between human GI physiology and drug product performance. In this review, the potential applications, advantages, and limitations of the most important in vivo techniques relevant to oral biopharmaceutics are presented from the perspectives of different research fields.
Coupling tensile test with LC-OCT and ultrasound imaging: investigation of the skin sublayers mechanical behaviour
The skin is an envelope that covers the entire body. Nowadays, understanding and studying the mechanical, biological and sensory properties of the skin is essential, especially in dermatology and cosmetology. The in-depth study of the skin’s mechanical behaviour is a highly intriguing challenge, enabling the differentiation of the behaviour of each layer. An extension device was developed to perform relaxation and extension tests to characterize the skin. The device has also been coupled with imaging tools (LC-OCT and ultrasound), allowing us to observe layer-by-layer deformations during the tests. Relaxation tests revealed significant skin anisotropy, as well as an influence of age and gender on skin viscoelastic parameters calculated from relaxation curves and a skin viscoelastic model. These tests also unveiled their ability to distinguish certain characteristic pathologies that alter the mechanical properties of the skin, such as scleroderma or heliodermatitis. Furthermore, the optical–mechanical coupling and deformation calculation through image analysis demonstrated that the skin layers exhibit distinct mechanical behaviours owing to their different structures. Finally, Poisson’s ratio of the skin was obtained by calculating the deformation in two directions for each layer.
Current and Future Tools for Diagnosis of Kaposi’s Sarcoma
Kaposi’s sarcoma (KS) is a rare, atypical malignancy associated with immunosuppression and can be qualified as an opportunistic tumor, which responds to immune modulation or restoration. Four different epidemiological forms have been individualized (AIDS-related, iatrogenic, endemic or classic KS). Although clinical examination is sufficient to diagnose cutaneous lesions of KS, additional explorations are necessary in order to detect lesions involving other organs. New histological markers have been developed in recent years concerning the detection of HHV-8 latent or lytic proteins in the lesions, helping to confirm the diagnosis when it is clinically doubtful. More recently, the evaluation of the local immune response has also been shown to provide some guidance in choosing the appropriate therapeutic option when necessary. We also review the indication and the results of conventional radiological imaging and of non-invasive imaging tools such as 18F-fluoro-deoxy-glucose positron emission tomography, thermography and laser Doppler imaging for the diagnosis of KS and for the follow-up of therapeutic response in patients requiring systemic treatment.
Extracardiac Compression by Gastrointestinal Structures: A Comprehensive Anthology From the Literature
Extrinsic heart compression by gastrointestinal (GI) structures is an often underrecognized finding in clinical practice. It is potentially related to unpredictable clinical conditions, ranging from incidental detection in asymptomatic subjects, to deranging and potentially life‐threatening clinical manifestations. However, despite its potential clinical relevance, there is still no comprehensive analysis investigating the surrounding causes, clinical findings, and diagnostic imaging work‐up for this patient population. A narrative review with an extensive bibliographic search of the literature was performed using PubMed (MEDLINE), Embase, and Cochrane Central Databases up to December 31, 2023. Despite the broad spectrum of GI etiologies, clinical manifestations, and cardiac chamber involvement scenarios, physicians must be aware of such an uncommon condition, in order to provide timely diagnosis through a comprehensive imaging approach, avoid misleading interpretations, and determine the most appropriate decision‐making strategy.
