Improved Delayed Detached Eddy Simulation of the Slipstream and Trackside Pressure of Trains with Different Horizontal Profiles

The slipstream caused by high-speed trains may harm pedestrians and workers trackside. In general, the characteristics of the slipstream are influenced mainly by the nose shape of the train. The present study explores the slipstream caused by high-speed trains with three different horizontal nose profiles based on the results of three-dimensional, improved delayed detached eddy simulation (IDDES) with an unsteady turbulence model and a set of 1/8th scaled train models. The results obtained using this numerical methodology are in good agreement with those obtained from corresponding wind tunnel tests. The trackside pressure changes around the train models are also captured and analyzed. The analysis reveals that the width of the nose can significantly influence the magnitude and arrival time of slipstream velocity and pressure peaks. The results and proposed numerical methodology can be used as guidelines for the design of high-speed train nose shapes.

In this work, we present the first three-dimensional (3D) computational investigation of wind turbine airfoils over 360° angles of attack to predict unsteady aerodynamic loads and vortex-shedding characteristics. To this end, static–airfoil simulations are performed for the FFA-W3 airfoil family at a Reynolds number of 107 with the Improved Delayed Detached Eddy Simulation turbulence model. Aerodynamic forces reveal that the onset of boundary-layer instabilities and flow separation does not necessarily coincide with the onset of stall. In addition, a comparison with two-dimensional simulation data and flat plate theory extension of airfoil polars, suggest that, in the deep stall regime, 3D effects remain critical for predicting both the unsteady loads and the vortex-shedding dynamics. For all airfoils, the vortex-shedding frequencies are found to be inversely proportional to the wake width. In the case of slender airfoils, the frequencies are nearly independent of the airfoil thickness, and their corresponding Strouhal number St is approximately 0.15. Based on the calculated St, the potential for shedding frequencies to coincide with the natural frequencies of the International Energy Agency 15 MW reference wind turbine blades is investigated. The analysis shows that vortex-induced vibrations occur primarily at angles of attack of around ±90° for all airfoils.

Purpose
Sustainable urban rail transit requires noise barriers. However, these barriers’ durability varies due to the differing aerodynamic impacts they experience. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the aerodynamic discrepancies of trains when they meet within two types of rectangular noise barriers: fully enclosed (FERNB) and semi-enclosed with vertical plates (SERNBVB). The research also considers the sensitivity of the scale ratio in these scenarios.
Design/methodology/approach
A 1:16 scaled moving model test analyzed spatiotemporal patterns and discrepancies in aerodynamic pressures during train meetings. Three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics models, with scale ratios of 1:1, 1:8 and 1:16, used the improved delayed detached eddy simulation turbulence model and slip grid technique. Comparing scale ratios on aerodynamic pressure discrepancies between the two types of noise barriers and revealing the flow field mechanism were done. The goal is to establish the relationship between aerodynamic pressure at scale and in full scale.
Findings
The aerodynamic pressure on SERNBVB is influenced by the train’s head and tail waves, whereas for FERNB, it is affected by pressure wave and head-tail waves. Notably, SERNBVB's aerodynamic pressure is more sensitive to changes in scale ratio. As the scale ratio decreases, the aerodynamic pressure on the noise barrier gradually increases.
Originality/value
A train-meeting moving model test is conducted within the noise barrier. Comparison of aerodynamic discrepancies during train meets between two types of rectangular noise barriers and the relationship between the scale and the full scale are established considering the modeling scale ratio.

Assessment of Hybrid RANS/LES Models in Heat and Fluid Flows around Staggered Pin-Fin Arrays

In the present work, the three-dimensional heat and fluid flows around staggered pin-fin arrays are predicted using two hybrid RANS/LES models (an improved delayed detached eddy simulation (IDDES) model and a stress-blended eddy simulation (SBES) model), and one transitional unsteady Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) model, called k-ω SSTLM. The periodic segment geometry with a total of nine pins is considered with a channel height of 2D and a distance of 2.5D between each pin. The corresponding Reynolds number based on the pin diameter and the maximum velocity between pins is 10,000. The two hybrid RANS/LES results show the superior prediction of the mean velocity profiles around the pins, pressure distributions on the pin wall, and Nusselt number distributions. However, the transitional model, k-ω SSTLM, shows large discrepancies except in front of the pins where the flow is not fully developed. The vortical structures are well resolved by the two hybrid RANS/LES models. The SBES model is particularly adept at capturing the 3-D vortex structures after the pins. The effects of the blending function switching between RANS and LES mode of the two hybrid RANS/LES models are also investigated.

The effect of ground condition on unsteady aerodynamic performance of a maglev train was numerically investigated with an IDDES (Improved Delayed Detached Eddy Simulation) method. The accuracy of the numerical method has been validated by wind tunnel experiments. The flow structure, slipstream and aerodynamic force around the train under stationary and moving ground conditions were compared. Track and ground play a leading role in the influence of wake vortex structure; the flow structure around the train is more complex under the stationary ground boundary condition. Near the nose point of the head and tail vehicles, the peak value of the slipstream under the condition of moving ground is slightly higher than that under stationary ground. In the wake area, the effect of the main vortex structure on both sides of the tail vehicle and the track makes the vortex structure in the wake area stronger than that under moving ground, the slipstream peak is larger and the locus thereof is further forward. In the horizontal direction, the vortex desorption energy near the nose tip of the train is higher on stationary ground, while the vortex desorption energy far from the nose tip of the train is higher on moving ground. Compared with the static ground boundary condition, the resistance coefficient of the head and tail of a maglev train increases by 3.45% and 3.31% respectively under the moving ground boundary condition. The lift coefficient decreases by 157.78% and 5.13%, respectively.

One of the most common systems in engineering problems is the multi-column system in the form of an equilateral-triangular arrangement. This study used three-dimensional numerical simulations to investigate the flow around three cylinders in this arrangement at the super-critical Reynolds number Re=3×106, concentrating on the influence on the spacing ratio (L/D) among cylinders. The instantaneous vortex structures, Strouhal numbers, fluid force coefficients, and pressure distributions are analyzed thoroughly. The present study demonstrated that fluid dynamics is sensitive to L/D, by which five different flow patterns are classified, namely single bluff body flow (L/D≤1.1), deflected gap flow (1.2≤L/D≤1.4), anti-phase flow (1.5≤L/D≤2.3), in-phase flow (2.5≤L/D<3.5), and co-shedding flow (L/D≥3.5). Critical bounds are identified by significant transitions in the flow structure, discontinuous drop and jump of St, and force coefficients.

The extended operation of high-speed railways has led to an increased incidence of tunnel lining defects, with falling debris posing a significant safety threat. Within tunnels, single-train passage and trains-crossing events constitute the most frequent operational scenarios, both generating extreme aerodynamic environments that alter debris trajectories from free fall. To systematically investigate the aerodynamic differences and underlying mechanisms governing falling debris behavior under these two distinct conditions, a three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model (debris–air–tunnel–train) was developed using an improved delayed detached eddy simulation (IDDES) turbulence model. Comparative analyses focused on the translational and rotational motions as well as the aerodynamic load coefficients of the debris in both single-train and trains-crossing scenarios. The mechanisms driving the changes in debris aerodynamic behavior are elucidated. Findings reveal that under single-train operation, falling debris travels a greater distance compared with trains-crossing conditions. Specifically, at train speeds ranging from 250–350 km/h, the average flight distances of falling debris in the X and Z directions under single-train conditions surpass those under trains crossing conditions by 10.3 and 5.5 times, respectively. At a train speed of 300 km/h, the impulse of CFx and CFz under single-train conditions is 8.6 and 4.5 times greater than under trains-crossing conditions, consequently leading to the observed reduction in flight distance. Under the conditions of trains crossing, the falling debris is situated between the two trains, and although the wind speed is low, the flow field exhibits instability. This is the primary factor contributing to the reduced flight distance of the falling debris. However, it also leads to more pronounced trajectory deviations and increased speed fluctuations under intersection conditions. The relative velocity (CRV) on the falling debris surface is diminished, resulting in smaller-scale vortex structures that are more numerous. Consequently, the aerodynamic load coefficient is reduced, while the fluctuation range experiences an increase.

The topic of the present study is the aerodynamic performance of a Natural Laminar Flow (NLF) wing for UAVs at low speed. The basis is a thoroughly tested NLF airfoil in the wind tunnel of NASA which is well-customized for light aircrafts. The aim of this work is the numerical verification that a typical wing design (tapered with moderate aspect ratio and wash-out), being constructed out of aerodynamically highly efficient NLF airfoils during cruise, can deliver high aerodynamic loading under minimal freestream turbulence as well as realistic atmospheric conditions of intermediate turbulence. Thus, high mission flexibility is achieved, e.g., short take off/landing capabilities on the deck of ship where moderate air turbulence is prevalent. Special attention is paid to the effect of the Wing Tip Vortex (WTV) under minimal inflow turbulence regimes. The flight conditions are take off or landing at moderate Reynolds number, i.e., one to two millions. The numerical simulation is based on an open source CFD code and parallel processing on a High Performance Computing (HPC) platform. The aim is the identification of both mean flow and turbulent structures around the wing and subsequently the formation of the wing tip vortex. Due to the purely three-dimensional character of the flow, the turbulence is resolved with advanced modeling, i.e., the Improved Delayed Detached Eddy Simulation (IDDES) which is well-customized to switch modes between Delayed Detached Eddy Simulation (DDES) and Wall-Modeled Large Eddy Simulation (WMLES), thus increasing the accuracy in the shear layer regions, the tip vortex and the wake, while at the same time keeping the computational cost at reasonable levels. IDDES also has the capability to resolve the transition of the boundary layer from laminar to turbulent, at least with engineering accuracy; thus, it serves as a high-fidelity turbulence model in this work. The study comprises an initial benchmarking of the code against wind tunnel measurements of the airfoil and verifies the adequacy of mesh density that is used for the simulation around the wing. Subsequently, the wing is positioned at near-stall conditions so that the aerodynamic loading, the kinematics of the flow and the turbulence regime in the wing vicinity, the wake and far downstream can be estimated. In terms of the kinematics of the WTV, a thorough examination is attempted which comprises its inception, i.e., the detachment of the boundary layer on the cut-off wing tip, the roll-up of the shear layer to form the wake and the motion of the wake downstream. Moreover, the effect of inflow turbulence of moderate intensity is investigated that verifies the bibliography with regard to the performance degradation of static airfoils in a turbulent atmospheric regime.

Effects of Wave–Current Interaction on Hydrodynamic Performance and Motion Response of a Floating Tidal Stream Turbine

Within real-world marine settings, the operational performance of floating tidal stream turbines is impacted by wave–current interaction effects and platform motion responses. Leveraging the improved delayed detached eddy simulation (IDDES) method, this research constructs a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) numerical analysis framework for floating turbines in wave–current environments. It further investigates the hydrodynamic behaviors and motion response features of the turbine under wave–current interactions. The results show that under the combined action of regular waves and steady currents, the fluctuation amplitudes of the power coefficient and thrust coefficient of the floating turbine exhibit a positive correlation with wave height, whereas the mean values of these coefficients remain relatively stable; in contrast, the mean values of the Cp and Ct are proportional to the wave period. Additionally, the motion amplitude of the platform shows a proportional relationship with both wave height and wave period. Flow field analysis demonstrates that elevations in wave height and period result in enhanced flow turbulence, disrupted wake vortex shedding patterns, non-uniform pressure distributions across the blades, and a larger pressure differential in the blade tip area. Such conditions may potentially induce cavitation erosion and fatigue loads. The results of the research have certain academic significance and value to the development and engineering of floating tidal current energy devices.

Application of the DMD Approach to High-Reynolds-Number Flow over an Idealized Ground Vehicle

This paper attempts to develop a Dynamic Mode Decomposition (DMD)-based Reduced Order Model (ROMs) that can quickly but accurately predict the forces and moments experienced by a road vehicle such that they be used by an on-board controller to determine the vehicle’s trajectory. DMD can linearize a large dataset of high-dimensional measurements by decomposing them into low-dimensional coherent structures and associated time dynamics. This ROM can then also be applied to predict the future state of the fluid flow. Existing literature on DMD is limited to low Reynolds number applications. This paper presents DMD analyses of the flow around an idealized road vehicle, called the Ahmed body, at a Reynolds number of 2.7×106. The high-dimensional dataset used in this paper was collected from a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation performed using the Menter’s Shear Stress Transport (SST) turbulence model within the context of Improved Delayed Detached Eddy Simulations (IDDES). The DMD algorithm, as available in the literature, was found to suffer nonphysical dampening of the medium-to-high frequency modes. Enhancements to the existing algorithm were explored, and a modified DMD approach is presented in this paper, which includes: (a) a requirement of higher sampling rate to obtain a higher resolution of data, and (b) a custom filtration process to remove spurious modes. The modified DMD algorithm thus developed was applied to the high-Reynolds-number, separation-dominated flow past the idealized ground vehicle. The effectiveness of the modified algorithm was tested by comparing future predictions of force and moment coefficients as predicted by the DMD-based ROM to the reference CFD simulation data, and they were found to offer significant improvement.
