Language Learning Environments

Language and languages -- Study and teaching -- Methodology
2021
This book is the first in-depth examination of the application
of theories of space to issues of second language learning. The
author introduces the work of key thinkers on the theory of space
and place and the relevance of their ideas to second language
acquisition (SLA). He also outlines a new conceptual framework and
set of terms for researching SLA that centre on the idea of
'language learning environments'. The book considers the spatial
contexts in which language learning takes place and investigates
how these spatial contexts are transformed into individualised
language learning environments, as learners engage with a range of
human and nonhuman, and physical and nonphysical, resources in
their daily lives. Revisiting linguistics and language learning
theory from a spatial perspective, the book demonstrates that the
question of where people learn languages is equally as important as
that of how they do so. This work is essential reading for any
researcher wishing to research the role of the environment as an
active player in SLA.

English as a second language
2020
This paper examines language teaching and learning theories in a bid to consider evolving and appropriate approaches and methods for efficient teaching and learning English as a second language in Nigeria. While traditional approaches do provide a solid foundation for effective language teaching, they do not always address students' situational and current needs. Hence, the study reveals that strategies and methods are evolving especially, in this hi-tech age, to meet such additional needs. Since no one theory or method is the best, the study recommends a principled eclectic approach for the effective and functional teaching and learning of English in Nigeria. It also suggests processes that could enhance teaching and motivate learning in the ESL classroom.

Representation theory of finite semigroups, semigroup radicals and formal language theory
2009
In this paper we characterize the congruence associated to the direct sum of all irreducible representations of a finite semigroup over an arbitrary field, generalizing results of Rhodes for the field of complex numbers. Applications are given to obtain many new results, as well as easier proofs of several results in the literature, involving: triangularizability of finite semigroups; which semigroups have (split) basic semigroup algebras, two-sided semidirect product decompositions of finite monoids; unambiguous products of rational languages; products of rational languages with counter; and Černý’s conjecture for an important class of automata.

Arabic : a linguistic introduction
\"This lively introduction to the linguistics of Arabic provides students with a concise overview of the language's structure and its various components: its phonology, morphology and syntax. Through exercises, discussion points and assignment built into every chapter, the book presents the Arabic language in vivid and engaging terms, encouraging students to grasp the complexity of its linguistic situation\"-- Provided by publisher.
One model for the learning of language
2022
A major goal of linguistics and cognitive science is to understand what class of learning systems can acquire natural language. Until recently, the computational requirements of language have been used to argue that learning is impossible without a highly constrained hypothesis space. Here, we describe a learning system that is maximally unconstrained, operating over the space of all computations, and is able to acquire many of the key structures present in natural language from positive evidence alone. We demonstrate this by providing the same learning model with data from 74 distinct formal languages which have been argued to capture key features of language, have been studied in experimental work, or come from an interesting complexity class. The model is able to successfully induce the latent system generating the observed strings from small amounts of evidence in almost all cases, including for regular (e.g., aⁿ, (ab)ⁿ, and {a, b}⁺), context-free (e.g., aⁿbⁿ, aⁿbn+m
, and xxR
), and context-sensitive (e.g., aⁿbⁿcⁿ, aⁿbmcⁿdm
, and xx) languages, as well as for many languages studied in learning experiments. These results show that relatively small amounts of positive evidence can support learning of rich classes of generative computations over structures. The model provides an idealized learning setup upon which additional cognitive constraints and biases can be formalized.

Insights into Senior Foreign Language Education
2021
This book examines the unique characteristics of teaching
foreign languages to senior learners. It discusses the potential
age-related barriers and learning difficulties which may be
encountered in senior foreign language education as well as
solutions to overcome these challenges. The author describes the
processes of human aging from different perspectives and introduces
the concept of lifelong learning. The book proposes classroom
practices, activities and materials that may be adopted when
working with senior learners which will prove useful to teachers
and teacher trainers, as well as to educational policymakers and
planners. Furthermore, it describes potential modifications to
educational programmes that may be introduced in order to eliminate
affective barriers, making the learning material relevant and
motivating, and encouraging the use of adult learning
strategies.
