State of the Art and Prospects in Metal-Organic Framework-Derived Microwave Absorption Materials
2022
HighlightsThe metal organic frameworks derived microwave absorption materials (MOF derived MAMs) were systematically reviewed. The design principles, preparation methods and effect of microstructures and composites of MOF derived MAMs were discussed. The challenges and further research directions of MOF derived MAMs were presentedMicrowave has been widely used in many fields, including communication, medical treatment and military industry; however, the corresponding generated radiations have been novel hazardous sources of pollution threating human’s daily life. Therefore, designing high-performance microwave absorption materials (MAMs) has become an indispensable requirement. Recently, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have been considered as one of the most ideal precursor candidates of MAMs because of their tunable structure, high porosity and large specific surface area. Usually, MOF-derived MAMs exhibit excellent electrical conductivity, good magnetism and sufficient defects and interfaces, providing obvious merits in both impedance matching and microwave loss. In this review, the recent research progresses on MOF-derived MAMs were profoundly reviewed, including the categories of MOFs and MOF composites precursors, design principles, preparation methods and the relationship between mechanisms of microwave absorption and microstructures of MAMs. Finally, the current challenges and prospects for future opportunities of MOF-derived MAMs are also discussed.

A Review on Metal–Organic Framework-Derived Porous Carbon-Based Novel Microwave Absorption Materials
2021
HighlightsThe theoretical knowledge in the field of microwave absorption is summarized in detail. The recent progress of metal–organic frameworks-derived porous carbon-based nanocomposites as microwave absorption materials is reviewed. The development of microwave absorption materials (MAMs) is a considerable important topic because our living space is crowed with electromagnetic wave which threatens human’s health. And MAMs are also used in radar stealth for protecting the weapons from being detected. Many nanomaterials were studied as MAMs, but not all of them have the satisfactory performance. Recently, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted tremendous attention owing to their tunable chemical structures, diverse properties, large specific surface area and uniform pore distribution. MOF can transform to porous carbon (PC) which is decorated with metal species at appropriate pyrolysis temperature. However, the loss mechanism of pure MOF-derived PC is often relatively simple. In order to further improve the MA performance, the MOFs coupled with other loss materials are a widely studied method. In this review, we summarize the theories of MA, the progress of different MOF-derived PC‑based MAMs, tunable chemical structures incorporated with dielectric loss or magnetic loss materials. The different MA performance and mechanisms are discussed in detail. Finally, the shortcomings, challenges and perspectives of MOF-derived PC‑based MAMs are also presented. We hope this review could provide a new insight to design and fabricate MOF-derived PC-based MAMs with better fundamental understanding and practical application.

2021
HighlightsUltralight 3D NiCo compound@MXene nanocomposites that inherited hollow polyhedral skeleton and excellent conductive network were fabricated.Excellent electromagnetic absorption performance was achieved with optimal RLmin value of − 67.22 dB and ultra-wide EAB of 6.72 GHz under the low filler loading.Electromagnetic parameters and microwave absorption property can be distinctly or slightly regulated by adjusting the filler loading and decoration of Ti3C2Tx nanoflakes. The 3D hollow hierarchical architectures tend to be designed for inhibiting stack of MXene flakes to obtain satisfactory lightweight, high-efficient and broadband absorbers. Herein, the hollow NiCo compound@MXene networks were prepared by etching the ZIF 67 template and subsequently anchoring the Ti3C2Tx nanosheets through electrostatic self-assembly. The electromagnetic parameters and microwave absorption property can be distinctly or slightly regulated by adjusting the filler loading and decoration of Ti3C2Tx nanoflakes. Based on the synergistic effects of multi-components and special well-constructed structure, NiCo layered double hydroxides@Ti3C2Tx (LDHT-9) absorber remarkably achieves unexpected effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 6.72 GHz with a thickness of 2.10 mm, covering the entire Ku-band. After calcination, transition metal oxide@Ti3C2Tx (TMOT-21) absorber near the percolation threshold possesses minimum reflection loss (RLmin) value of − 67.22 dB at 1.70 mm within a filler loading of only 5 wt%. This work enlightens a simple strategy for constructing MXene-based composites to achieve high-efficient microwave absorbents with lightweight and tunable EAB.

HighlightsNi-MXene/MF foam is synthesized via an electrostatic assembly and dip-coating process. The “micro-capacitor” structure of Ni/MXene and the 3D porous structure of MF endow the foam excellent impedance matching and wave absorption performance. The excellent heat insulation, infrared stealth, and flame-retardant performances are achieved. The development of multifunctional and efficient electromagnetic wave absorbing materials is a challenging research hotspot. Here, the magnetized Ni flower/MXene hybrids are successfully assembled on the surface of melamine foam (MF) through electrostatic self-assembly and dip-coating adsorption process, realizing the integration of microwave absorption, infrared stealth, and flame retardant. Remarkably, the Ni/MXene-MF achieves a minimum reflection loss (RLmin) of − 62.7 dB with a corresponding effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 6.24 GHz at 2 mm and an EAB of 6.88 GHz at 1.8 mm. Strong electromagnetic wave absorption is attributed to the three-dimensional magnetic/conductive networks, which provided excellent impedance matching, dielectric loss, magnetic loss, interface polarization, and multiple attenuations. In addition, the Ni/MXene-MF endows low density, excellent heat insulation, infrared stealth, and flame-retardant functions. This work provided a new development strategy for the design of multifunctional and efficient electromagnetic wave absorbing materials.

Ultralight Magnetic and Dielectric Aerogels Achieved by Metal–Organic Framework Initiated Gelation of Graphene Oxide for Enhanced Microwave Absorption
2022
HighlightsMetal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are used to directly initiate the gelation of graphene oxide (GO), producing MOF/rGO aerogels. The ultralight magnetic and dielectric aerogels show remarkable microwave absorption performance with ultralow filling contents. The development of a convenient methodology for synthesizing the hierarchically porous aerogels comprising metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and graphene oxide (GO) building blocks that exhibit an ultralow density and uniformly distributed MOFs on GO sheets is important for various applications. Herein, we report a facile route for synthesizing MOF/reduced GO (rGO) aerogels based on the gelation of GO, which is directly initiated using MOF crystals. Free metal ions exposed on the surface of MIL-88A nanorods act as linkers that bind GO nanosheets to a three-dimensional porous network via metal–oxygen covalent or electrostatic interactions. The MOF/rGO-derived magnetic and dielectric aerogels Fe3O4@C/rGO and Ni-doped Fe3O4@C/rGO show notable microwave absorption (MA) performance, simultaneously achieving strong absorption and broad bandwidth at low thickness of 2.5 (− 58.1 dB and 6.48 GHz) and 2.8 mm (− 46.2 dB and 7.92 GHz) with ultralow filling contents of 0.7 and 0.6 wt%, respectively. The microwave attenuation ability of the prepared aerogels is further confirmed via a radar cross-sectional simulation, which is attributed to the synergistic effects of their hierarchically porous structures and heterointerface engineering. This work provides an effective pathway for fabricating hierarchically porous MOF/rGO hybrid aerogels and offers magnetic and dielectric aerogels for ultralight MA.

Defect and interface engineering are efficient approaches to adjust the physical and chemical properties of nanomaterials. In order to effectively utilize these strategies for the improvement of microwave absorption properties (MAPs), in this study, we reported the synthesis of hollow carbon shells and hollow carbon@MoS

nanocomposites by the template-etching and template-etching-hydrothermal methods, respectively. The obtained results indicated that the degree of defect for hollow carbon shells and hollow carbon@MoS
2
could be modulated by the thickness of hollow carbon shell, which effectively fulfilled the optimization of electromagnetic parameters and improvement of MAPs. Furthermore, the microstructure investigations revealed that the precursor of hollow carbon shells was encapsulated by the sheet-like MoS

in high efficiency. And the introduction of MoS

nanosheets acting as the shell effectively improved the interfacial effects and boosted the polarization loss capabilities, which resulted in the improvement of comprehensive MAPs. The elaborately designed hollow carbon@MoS

samples displayed very outstanding MAPs including strong absorption capabilities, broad absorption bandwidth, and thin matching thicknesses. Therefore, this work provided a viable strategy to improve the MAPs of microwave absorbers by taking full advantage of their defect and interface engineering.

HighlightsNiCo-LDHs successfully grow in situ on rod-like ZnO with unique structures. The interface of NiCo@C and rod-like ZnO result in interfacial polarization. The RLmin of NiCo@C/ZnO reaches − 60.97 dB with the EABmax of 6.08 GHz.The excellent performance comes from the effect of dielectric loss and magnetic loss.Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have a special structure and atom composition, which are expected to be an excellent electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorber. However, it is still a problem that obtaining excellent EMW-absorbing materials from LDHs. Herein, we designed heterostructure NiCo-LDHs@ZnO nanorod and then subsequent heat treating to derive NiCo@C/ZnO composites. Finally, with the synergy of excellent dielectric loss and magnetic loss, an outstanding absorption performance could be achieved with the reflection loss of − 60.97 dB at the matching thickness of 2.3 mm, and the widest absorption bandwidth of 6.08 GHz was realized at 2.0 mm. Moreover, this research work provides a reference for the development and utilization of LDHs materials in the field of microwave absorption materials and can also provide ideas for the design of layered structural absorbers.

Size-Dependent Oxidation-Induced Phase Engineering for MOFs Derivatives Via Spatial Confinement Strategy Toward Enhanced Microwave Absorption
2022
HighlightsThe size of metal organic frameworks (MOFs) derivatives was manipulated by a spatial confined growth strategy.Dielectric polarization is the dominant dissipation mechanism due to the phase hybridization based on size dependent oxidation motion. The specific reflection loss of synthesized Co/Co3O4 hollow carbon nanocages surpasses most reported MOFs derived counterparts for practical microwave absorption applications.Precisely reducing the size of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) derivatives is an effective strategy to manipulate their phase engineering owing to size-dependent oxidation; however, the underlying relationship between the size of derivatives and phase engineering has not been clarified so far. Herein, a spatial confined growth strategy is proposed to encapsulate small-size MOFs derivatives into hollow carbon nanocages. It realizes that the hollow cavity shows a significant spatial confinement effect on the size of confined MOFs crystals and subsequently affects the dielectric polarization due to the phase hybridization with tunable coherent interfaces and heterojunctions owing to size-dependent oxidation motion, yielding to satisfied microwave attenuation with an optimal reflection loss of −50.6 dB and effective bandwidth of 6.6 GHz. Meanwhile, the effect of phase hybridization on dielectric polarization is deeply visualized, and the simulated calculation and electron holograms demonstrate that dielectric polarization is shown to be dominant dissipation mechanism in determining microwave absorption. This spatial confined growth strategy provides a versatile methodology for manipulating the size of MOFs derivatives and the understanding of size-dependent oxidation-induced phase hybridization offers a precise inspiration in optimizing dielectric polarization and microwave attenuation in theory.

Environmentally Friendly and Multifunctional Shaddock Peel-Based Carbon Aerogel for Thermal-Insulation and Microwave Absorption
2021
HighlightsThe eco-friendly shaddock peel-derived carbon aerogels were prepared by a freeze-drying method.Multiple functions such as thermal insulation, compression resistance and microwave absorption can be integrated into one material-carbon aerogel.Novel computer simulation technology strategy was selected to simulate significant radar cross-sectional reduction values under real far field condition..Eco-friendly electromagnetic wave absorbing materials with excellent thermal infrared stealth property, heat-insulating ability and compression resistance are highly attractive in practical applications. Meeting the aforesaid requirements simultaneously is a formidable challenge. Herein, ultra-light carbon aerogels were fabricated via fresh shaddock peel by facile freeze-drying method and calcination process, forming porous network architecture. With the heating platform temperature of 70 °C, the upper surface temperatures of the as-prepared carbon aerogel present a slow upward trend. The color of the sample surface in thermal infrared images is similar to that of the surroundings. With the maximum compressive stress of 2.435 kPa, the carbon aerogels can provide favorable endurance. The shaddock peel-based carbon aerogels possess the minimum reflection loss value (RLmin) of − 29.50 dB in X band. Meanwhile, the effective absorption bandwidth covers 5.80 GHz at a relatively thin thickness of only 1.7 mm. With the detection theta of 0°, the maximum radar cross-sectional (RCS) reduction values of 16.28 dB m2 can be achieved. Theoretical simulations of RCS have aroused extensive interest owing to their ingenious design and time-saving feature. This work paves the way for preparing multi-functional microwave absorbers derived from biomass raw materials under the guidance of RCS simulations.

As electromagnetic absorbers with wide absorption bandwidth are highly pursued in the cutting-edge electronic and telecommunication industries, the traditional dielectric or magnetic bulky absorbers remain concerns of extending the effective absorption bandwidth. In this work, a dual-principle strategy has been proposed to make a better understanding of the impact of utilizing conductive absorption fillers coupled with implementing artificial structures design on the absorption performance. In the comparison based on the microscopic studies, the carbon nanotubes (CNTs)-based absorbers are confined to narrow operating bandwidth and relatively fixed response frequency range, which can not fulfill the ever-growing demands in the application. With subsequent macroscopic structure design based on the CNTs-based dielectric fillers, the artificial patterns show much more broadened absorption bandwidth, covering the majority of C-band, the whole X-band, and Ku-band, due to the tailored electromagnetic parameters and more reflections and scatterings. The results suggest that the combination of developing microscopic powder/bulky absorbers and macroscopic configuration design will fundamentally extend the effective operating bandwidth of microwave.
