Magnetic Field Influence on the Microwave Characteristics of Composite Samples Based on Polycrystalline Y-Type Hexaferrite
Here, we report results on the magnetic and microwave properties of polycrystalline Y-type hexaferrite synthesized by sol-gel auto-combustion and acting as a filler in a composite microwave-absorbing material. The reflection losses in the 1–20 GHz range of the Y-type hexaferrite powder dispersed homogeneously in a polymer matrix of silicon rubber were investigated in the absence and in the presence of a magnetic field. A permanent magnet was used with a strength of 1.4 T, with the magnetic force lines oriented perpendicularly to the direction of the electromagnetic wave propagation. In the case of using an external magnetic field, an extraordinary result was observed. The microwave reflection losses reached a maximum value of 35.4 dB at 5.6 GHz in the Ku-band without a magnetic field and a maximum value of 21.4 dB at 8.2 GHz with the external magnetic field applied. The sensitivity of the microwave properties of the composite material to the external magnetic field was manifested by the decrease of the reflected wave attenuation. At a fixed thickness, tm, of the composite, the attenuation peak frequency can be adjusted to a certain value either by changing the filling density or by applying an external magnetic field.
The synthesis of CoAl0.3Fe1.7O4/SmFeO3 nanocomposites with enhanced properties for technological applications
The main challenge of the current study is to produce nanocomposites (NCs) of (1-x) CoAl 0.3 Fe 1.7 O 4 /(x)SmFeO 3 with improved structural and magnetic properties using the citrate auto-combustion technique. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy images showed nanostructures with average particle sizes of 32.5 and 52.5 nm for SmFO 3 and CoAl 0.3 Fe 1.7 O 4 , respectively. The anisotropy constant values for x  = 0.3 are nearly 11 times greater than SmFeO 3 . The ratio of SmFeO 3 incorporated into NCs adjusts their switching field distribution (SFD), making NCs with a low SFD recommended for recording applications. NCs offer the combined advantages of the two constituent phases and can be used to create new and more advanced applications. Based on the estimated data, the prepared NCs can operate at a frequency between 0.1 and 11.9 GHz, making them suitable for developing nanotechnology devices from radio waves traveling through the S-band to the Ku band. Electromagnetic Properties of Carbon Nanotube/BaFe12−xGaxO19/Epoxy Composites with Random and Oriented Filler Distributions
The microwave properties of epoxy composites filled with 30 wt.% of BaFe12–xGaxO19 (0.1 ≤ x ≤ 1.2) and with 1 wt.% of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were investigated in the frequency range 36–55 GHz. A sufficient increase in the microwave shielding efficiency was found for ternary 1 wt.%CNT/30 wt.% BaFe12–xGaxO19/epoxy composites compared with binary 1% CNT/epoxy and 30 wt.% BaFe12–xGaxO19/epoxy due to the complementary contributions of dielectric and magnetic losses. Thus, the addition of only 1 wt.% of CNTs along with 30 wt.% of barium hexaferrite into epoxy resin increased the frequency range where electromagnetic radiation is intensely attenuated. A correlation between the cation Ga3+ concentration in the BaFe12–xGaxO19 filler and amplitude–frequency characteristics of the natural ferromagnetic resonance (NFMR) in 1 wt.%CNT/30 wt.% BaFe12–xGaxO19/epoxy composites was determined. Higher values of the resonance frequency fres (51.8–52.4 GHz) and weaker dependence of fres on the Ga3+ concentration were observed compared with pressed polycrystalline BaFe12–xGaxO19 (fres = 49.6–50.4 GHz). An increase in the NFMR amplitude on the applied magnetic field for both random and aligned 1 wt.% CNT/30 wt.% BaFe12–xGaxO19/epoxy composites was found. The frequency of NFMR was approximately constant in the range of the applied magnetic field, H = 0–5 kOe, for the random 1 wt.% CNT/30 wt.% BaFe12–xGaxO19/epoxy composite, and it slightly increased for the aligned 1 wt.% CNT/30 wt.% BaFe12–xGaxO19/epoxy composite.
Structural, Magnetic and Microwave Characterization of Polycrystalline Z-Type Sr3Co2Fe24O41 Hexaferrite
We report results on the structural and microwave properties and magnetic phase transitions in polycrystalline Sr3Co2Fe24O41 hexaferrite synthesized by sol-gel auto-combustion and acting as a filler in a composite microwave absorbing material. The zero-field-cooled (ZFC) and field-cooled (FC) magnetization curves revealed a change in the magnetization behavior at 293 K. The reflection losses in the 1–20 GHz range of the Sr3Co2Fe24O41 powder dispersed homogeneously in a polymer matrix of silicon rubber were investigated in both the absence and presence of a magnetic field. In the latter case, a dramatic rise in the attenuation was observed. The microwave reflection losses reached the maximum value of 32.63 dB at 17.29 GHz in the Ku-band. The sensitivity of the microwave properties of the composite material to the external magnetic field was manifested by the appearance of new reflection losses maxima. At a fixed thickness tm of the composite, the attenuation peak frequency can be adjusted to a certain value either by changing the filling density or by applying an external magnetic field.
Defect and interface engineering in core@shell structure hollow carbon@MoS2 nanocomposites for boosted microwave absorption performance
Defect and interface engineering are efficient approaches to adjust the physical and chemical properties of nanomaterials. In order to effectively utilize these strategies for the improvement of microwave absorption properties (MAPs), in this study, we reported the synthesis of hollow carbon shells and hollow carbon@MoS 2 nanocomposites by the template-etching and template-etching-hydrothermal methods, respectively. The obtained results indicated that the degree of defect for hollow carbon shells and hollow carbon@MoS 2 could be modulated by the thickness of hollow carbon shell, which effectively fulfilled the optimization of electromagnetic parameters and improvement of MAPs. Furthermore, the microstructure investigations revealed that the precursor of hollow carbon shells was encapsulated by the sheet-like MoS 2 in high efficiency. And the introduction of MoS 2 nanosheets acting as the shell effectively improved the interfacial effects and boosted the polarization loss capabilities, which resulted in the improvement of comprehensive MAPs. The elaborately designed hollow carbon@MoS 2 samples displayed very outstanding MAPs including strong absorption capabilities, broad absorption bandwidth, and thin matching thicknesses. Therefore, this work provided a viable strategy to improve the MAPs of microwave absorbers by taking full advantage of their defect and interface engineering.
Recent Progress in Iron-Based Microwave Absorbing Composites: A Review and Prospective
With the rapid development of communication technology in civil and military fields, the problem of electromagnetic radiation pollution caused by the electromagnetic wave becomes particularly prominent and brings great harm. It is urgent to explore efficient electromagnetic wave absorption materials to solve the problem of electromagnetic radiation pollution. Therefore, various absorbing materials have developed rapidly. Among them, iron (Fe) magnetic absorbent particle material with superior magnetic properties, high Snoek’s cut-off frequency, saturation magnetization and Curie temperature, which shows excellent electromagnetic wave loss ability, are kinds of promising absorbing material. However, ferromagnetic particles have the disadvantages of poor impedance matching, easy oxidation, high density, and strong skin effect. In general, the two strategies of morphological structure design and multi-component material composite are utilized to improve the microwave absorption performance of Fe-based magnetic absorbent. Therefore, Fe-based microwave absorbing materials have been widely studied in microwave absorption. In this review, through the summary of the reports on Fe-based electromagnetic absorbing materials in recent years, the research progress of Fe-based absorbing materials is reviewed, and the preparation methods, absorbing properties and absorbing mechanisms of iron-based absorbing materials are discussed in detail from the aspects of different morphologies of Fe and Fe-based composite absorbers. Meanwhile, the future development direction of Fe-based absorbing materials is also prospected, providing a reference for the research and development of efficient electromagnetic wave absorbing materials with strong absorption performance, frequency bandwidth, light weight and thin thickness.
A Low-Cost Silica Fiber/Epoxy Composite with Excellent Dielectric Properties, and Good Mechanical and Thermal Stability
In many electronic applications, the dielectric and structural properties of reinforced composites are vital. In this research work, the influence of fiber proportion on the properties of a silica fiber/epoxy (SFE) composite was investigated. The structure, morphology, dielectric constant and loss factor, mechanical properties, and thermal stability were determined. The increase of wt.% of silica fiber (SiO2 (f)) x = 30 to 90, reduced the dielectric constant (εr) and dielectric loss (δ) of the SFE composite from their original values to 18.9% and 48.5%, lowering local charge displacement towards the applied electric field. The SFE composite showed higher mechanical properties with the increase in SiO2 (f), x = 30 to 80, the tensile strength (UTS) was raised from 91.6 MPa to 155.7 MPa, the compression strength (UCS) was increased from 261.1 MPa to 409.6 MPa and the flexural strength was enhanced from 192.3 MPa to 311.9 MPa. Upon further addition of SiO2 (f) to the composite, i.e., x = 90, the mechanical properties were reduced a little, but the dielectric properties were not changed. Increasing SiO2 (f) improved the thermal stability as weight loss was found to be 69% (x = 30) and 24% (x = 90), and average moisture absorption was found to be 1.1 to 1.8%. A silica fiber/epoxy composite, for microelectronics, can be made from a low-cost fiber, and its dielectric properties as well as its mechanical and thermal stability can be tuned or improved by varying fiber fractions.
High Tunable BaTixZr1-xO3 Films on Dielectric Substrate for Microwave Applications
In this study, the structural and microwave properties of BaTiZrO3 films deposited on alumina substrate were investigated. The films were deposited by RF magnetron sputtering in Ar/O2 ambient atmosphere. The research of the island films at the initial stages of the growth showed that the pyramidal type of growth prevails. It was demonstrated that as-deposited film is a BaZrTiO3 solid solution with a deficiency of titanium compared to the target. The air annealing at temperatures of 1100–1200 °C leads to the formation of a well-formed crystalline solid solution of BaZr0.3Ti0.7O3 with a predominant orientation (h00). The investigation of microwave parameters of the films fabricated at different conditions showed that the best performance with the tunability of 4.6 (78%), and the Q-factor of 18 to 40 at 2 GHz was achieved at annealing temperature of 1150 °C.
Hydrothermally Synthesized Mg-Based Spinel Nanoferrites: Phase Formation and Study on Magnetic Features and Microwave Characteristics
Three kinds of magnesium-based spinel nanoferrites with the chemical formulas of MgFe2O4 (Mg ferrite), Mg0.9Mn0.1Fe2O4 (Mg-Mn ferrite), and Mg0.9Mn0.1In0.1Fe1.9O4 (Mg-Mn-In ferrite) were synthesized by hydrothermal route. We report the composition-dependent magnetic parameters and microwave properties of Mg-based ferrite nanoparticles. XRD results revealed that the Mg-based ferrite nanoparticles exhibited a cubic spinel structure and had an average nanocrystallite size in the range of 5.8–2.6 nm. Raman spectroscopy analysis confirmed the formation of cubic-spinel phase Mg-based nanoferrites. The room-temperature magnetization measurements indicated that the Mg ferrite nanoparticles had superparamagnetic behavior; whereas the Mg-Mn and Mg-Mn-In ferrite nanoparticles exhibited a paramagnetic nature. The microwave properties of obtained ferrite nanoparticles were studied by alternating current (AC) magnetic susceptibility measurement and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. It was found that the un-substituted Mg ferrite sample exhibited microwave characteristics better than those of the Mn substituted and Mn-In co-substituted Mg ferrite samples.
