American Cinema of the 2010s
2021
The 2010s were perhaps the most tumultuous decade since the 1960s. The effects of the Great Recession continued to be felt. The administration of Barack Obama, the first African-American president, encouraged many to think that America was now 'post-racial', an illusion broken by the election of Donald Trump. Polarisation reigned, communicated on social media. Netflix and Amazon jumped into production. By 2019, Netflix produced more feature films than the traditional studios combined. Cinema's move from film to digital, in production and in exhibition, was complete by mid-decade. `MeToo and `Oscarssowhite signaled a reckoning with gross gender and racial inequalities in the media, matched by that in the wider culture. The essays of this book explore the blockbusters, low-budget sleepers, and films in between.

The gothic child
\"The fascination with dark and deathly threatening spaces, with looming towers and bloody deeds, is now accepted as characteristic of contemporary fantasy and fantastic fictions for children and adolescents. Although this fascination dates back to the gothic genre of the mid-18th century, at that time, the gothic genre was not regarded as suitable for children or young persons in general. However, many young authors' first literary attempts were linked to the gothic genre, and child characters were employed in many of their novels, thereby transforming the gothic into a domain with a predilection for youth. The aim of this book is to rediscover, present and analyze the usage of children in the gothic genre, spanning a period of 60 years from Horace Walpole's The Castle of Otranto (1764) to Charles Robert Maturin's Albigenses (1824). The Gothic Child is almost exclusively based on primary sources. It examines children and childhood in a new light and updates the current definition of the gothic genre by adding to it the archetype of the gothic child. The book also contains analyses of selected films from the 20th and 21st centuries and links the major child-related themes and motifs in them to the 18th and 19th-century representation of the child. \"-- Provided by publisher.
Color and composition under big data technology: the art of visual communication in film art
2024
In modern film art design, there are different kinds of art requirements to be involved. These artistic requirements embody our profound national culture in modern film art, making the organic combination of art and culture, which in turn achieves the promotion of art and provides more excellent traits for the development of modern film visual communication. At the same time, modern film design draws on traditional art from five aspects: composition, perspective, image, color and allegory, and applies its advantages and strengths completely to the process of modern film art design. Among them, the most important is the modern color and composition design. To illustrate the art of visual communication in film art cannot be separated from color and composition. In this paper, we analyze the dynamic changes of higher-order aberrations of near-eye and ortho-eye groups over time, find the turning point of the dynamic changes of higher-order aberrations, and compare the differences between the dynamic changes of higher-order aberrations of the two groups by interaction analysis. By analyzing the application of modern color and composition design in film, it is concluded that the art effect of modern film is inseparable from the design elements, and the color and composition influence caused by the product of the combination of design elements for human senses.

Screening Early Modern Drama
While film adaptations of Shakespeare's plays captured the popular imagination at the turn of the last century, independent filmmakers began to adapt the plays of Shakespeare's contemporaries. The roots of their films in European avant-garde cinema and the plays' politically subversive, sexually transgressive and violent subject matter challenge Shakespeare's cultural dominance and the conventions of mainstream cinema. In Screening Early Modern Drama, Pascale Aebischer shows how director Derek Jarman constructed an alternative, dissident, approach to filming literary heritage in his 'queer' Caravaggio and Edward II, providing models for subsequent filmmakers such as Mike Figgis, Peter Greenaway, Alex Cox and Sarah Harding. Aebischer explains how the advent of digital video has led to an explosion in low-budget screen versions of early modern drama. The only comprehensive analysis of early modern drama on screen to date, this groundbreaking study also includes an extensive annotated filmography listing forty-eight surviving adaptations.

Celluloid Symphonies
2019
Celluloid Symphonies is a unique sourcebook of writings on music for film, bringing together fifty-three critical documents, many previously inaccessible. It includes essays by those who created the music—Max Steiner, Erich Korngold, Jerry Goldsmith, Elmer Bernstein and Howard Shore—and outlines the major trends, aesthetic choices, technological innovations, and commercial pressures that have shaped the relationship between music and film from 1896 to the present. Julie Hubbert’s introductory essays offer a stimulating overview of film history as well as critical context for the close study of these primary documents. In identifying documents that form a written and aesthetic history for film music, Celluloid Symphonies provides an astonishing resource for both film and music scholars and for students.
